Venables to OU

Because you don’t discredit a coach for one bad game lol
Yeah that logic has always been funny to me. A coach is great for years. Has a bad game and all the sudden he can’t coach. Doesn’t make much sense

I think it’s a decent hire. But Not a home run or a “splash hire.” Definite downgrade from Lincoln.
Heading into the SEC you are wrong. The ceiling was hit in his 4th year. Good riddance no defense and sputtering offense against physical teams

Brent Venables would be an OUTSTANDING hire at OK if they do indeed make it official.

He's the perfect choice to take OK into the SEC.

He's win the Broyles award for asst coaches and has consistently been rated as one of the top 10 recruiters in the country.

Be it OK or Clemson his players love playing for him.

A lot of his former players at OK have openly endorsed him as the next coach at OK.

I'm sure Stoops has had a lot of influence in this. Apparently they have gotten over their falling out from the Baylor game a few years ago the night RG3 won the Heisman.

Joe Castiglione has been the ad at OK for almost 25 years he hasn't missed yet on fb coaches.
And he's a pretty good recruiter. Main reason Clemson has been so good on D for so many years. Good hire by OU. Now if OU can get Lebby as OC and keep Caleb the bleeding should stop.

I know we hear this all the time, the friend of a friend thing. But my best friend is a former writer and scout for one of the big recruiting services. He is friends with a bunch of coaches and is related to a few as well. That is what I heard from him from guys who used to coach with Venables.

He was the one who told me a week ago that Venables to OU was a done deal and I even posted it on here when I heard it.
Forgive me if I’m not buying that Venables has a drug problem Chucklz.

I'm hearing that the reason why Venables' hiring hasn't been announced yet is that he's trying to get more money allocated for his assistant coaches.

Thanks for your insight Great Kreskin, the same insight that everyone else was breaking last week too. What was your prediction for Sark and Texas’ record this year. State that so I can judge your relevance on predictions lol. Btw I think Sark was a good hire and stated as much when he was hired, still feel that way

This is the way Joe Public thinks. They tend to look at the most recent thing, good or bad, and make their evaluation based on that. That's why Joe P is wrong 90% of the time.
Georgia had a damn good year and their D stats were impressive but Bama is just a machine. To me it literally looked like Jimmy’s vs Joes especially the skill players. Bama’s receivers are always fast and strong

In 5 years Riley won 4 conference championships and had 3 playoff appearances. Not to mention coached 2 heisman winners and number one draft picks.

I don’t care who you are, but there aren’t too many coaches with those types of numbers other than Saban or Dabo. The chances of Venables having more success than Riley at OU are very very low. Maybe Riley would have never won a natty at OU, but I don’t think Venables even gets you in the playoff discussion.

Actually I was calling Venables to OU and others on here were saying it wasn’t a done deal.

It’s ok, don’t believe the coaches that actually coached with him and know him personally. A high power coach doing cocaine and liking women?? No way thats possible lol!

Nice ole’ to my Sark question I posed. In all honesty you’ll probably hear all kinds of differing opinions on BV on here but I doubt anyone is going to jump on board with your drug use accusation. You are probably right about Riley but in his 5th year are we better off than we were 5 years ago? Big fat nope.

He won conference championships, we were doing that before he got here. 2 of his qbs won Heisman., Stoops players won 2 and 2 more finished runner up before Riley was hired, Riley’s pet project, projected Heisman winner crashed and burned and was replaced after the fans booed the coach and the qb, Riley got beat by the 2 most physical defenses he played this year, he got shut out the entire 2nd half of the OSU game.

our Speed D gave up 300 yards rushing to Baylor.Yeah no thanks, good riddance, he’s too weak to lead OU into the SEC transition. But you’re more than welcome to go root him on with USC. Last I checked OU has been recruiting better that ISU, Baylor, OSU, Kansas, WV, Tulane but all of those teams made our Offense and defense look silly this year. Unacceptable.

He's coached OK to 4 straight Big XII titles. And he was just a play away from being in the Big XII title game. OSU was supposed to have a top 5 defense but Riley didn't have any trouble exploiting it. Most of the teams you mentioned tried to stop them using ball control. Only Baylor truly stopped their offense. Is a lot of your anr towards Riley because of some of his social stances?

What don’t you get about being shut out the entire second half of the OSU game with a CFP on the line? You see any Sooner fans upset he gone? There’s your answer lol

^ This right here. ^

Put me on record that Venables won't come close to Riley's accomplishments at OU.

Except that Joe Castiglione has not missed on his fb coaches. Riley didn't do anything to tarnish OK fb after Stoops left.

OU is going to be fine with Venables. Like in every other profession, it’s about looking forward instead of comparing to current coaching legends. If they get Brady or Lebby as OC and get a transfer like Zach Evans they will be fine offensively. Defensively, it will take him a few years to get it right.

MM check out this podcast with Teddy Lehman. Go to the 46:50 mark and listen for about a minute. There's no arguing Riley won alot of games, it's that most if not all of the fanbase is ready for a step up and most if not all don't think Riley is competent enough to do that with the current state of our program after his 5 years and especially heading into the new league. If recruiting takes a hit initially so be it. OU will hire good coaches that players will still want to play for imo.

I think Riley was checked out by that point and was ready to get the hell out of OU. I don’t blame him 😉

Just because the fanbase is “ready to move on”doesn’t mean the fan base is right. Sports organizations sometimes put too much h stock in to what “fans want”

Riley didn't get fired he moved on, on his own.

Hey I don't blame Riley either, hard to pass up the money and go to a league where you can be top dog pretty easily and not leave the state for recruiting

I see Riley a lot like Kirby Smart and Brian Kelly. All are great coaches and consistently make the playoffs, but just can’t seem to win that big game. How much longer does Kirby get at UGA if he keeps losing to bama and losing in the playoffs?

i think it was probably smart for Kelly and Riley to leave when they did because the fans would’ve been calling for their heads after one bad season.

In 5 years Riley won 4 conference championships and had 3 playoff appearances. Not to mention coached 2 heisman winners and number one draft picks.

He inherited a team on a 10-game winning streak that was defending Big XII Champions, that had demolished Auburn in the Sugar Bowl, and had an excellent recruiting class coming in.

He did go to three straight playoff games, but OU got progressively softer each year he was there. In his first season, they were competitive with Georgia, losing 54-48 in double overtime. The next year, they got blown out by Alabama (although they scored some garbage points in the second half to make the final score more respectable). In his final playoff appearance, Lincoln and Alex Grinch got run out of the building by LSU in a 63-28 trouncing, giving up almost 700 total yards to the Tigers. Then, there's this year. OU failed to qualify for the Big XII Championship and were a handful of plays away from finishing 7-5. In the process, they made Tulane look like an SEC team, and got dominated by the worst team in the FBS (Kansas) for three quarters. If I was a USC fan, my biggest concern would be Alex Grinch.

Riley may or may not succeed, but he's built nothing to this point. He took over as head coach at OU standing on 3rd base, and apparently a lot of people think he hit a triple. As to his two Heisman quarterbacks, he deserves some credit, but they were transfers. His hand-picked, highly recruited, can't miss, Heisman anointed QB, Spencer Rattler, actually regressed this year before getting benched.
