I want to acknowledge my White privilege. I am 52 yrs old with a rural South and international background (oil business.)
I and all other whites I knew we’re privileged in the 70’s. While, dad always had a great job, I lived very modestly with my Grandparents, for a number of years, and many of the folks around us were really poor whites. We all had white privilege, over blacks - who mostly lived in shacks down in the “quarters.” It didn’t mean much in the grand scheme but poor whites did maintain a certain privileged status over blacks. Nothing came free and you had to earn everything you got - but we maintained our privilege.
I don’t know about other folks, and younger folks or folks who lived in more progressive areas but I certainly experienced White Privilege.
Looking back, I think it faded out during the 90’s and largely doesn’t exist anymore - it’s more about poor/rich privilege now.
I am curious about other folk’s perspectives. What is your age and what is your White Privilege status.
