The TCH War Room: Freshmen RBs impressing early; recruiting visitors; former UT great on Texas commit

--- The Texas Longhorn football team practiced twice this week. The Longhorn staff is focused on installing the playbook. I was told the installation process began during winter conditioning and will continue through the spring. So far, the installation process is going well and there have not been any hiccups.

--- Longhorn running backs CJ Baxter and Jaydon Blue split reps with the 1s during the first two days of practice. Baxter is currently the No. 1 running back, however, it appears Blue is getting a good look with the first team as well.

--- I was told to keep an eye on freshman running backs Christian Clark and Jerrick Gibson. Both players are working with the 2s and have made an immediate impression. According to multiple people inside the building, Clark is quick and explosive when he touches the ball. One person told me Gibson runs with a purpose.

“These guys are just different,” one source said.

That does not mean Clark and Gibson are ready to compete for the No. 1 job in March. Instead, it means we must keep an eye on their progression throughout the offseason and see if they can move up the depth chart later this year. For now, Clark and Gibson are off to a great start.

--- I noticed redshirt freshman Payton Kirkland was in better shape this spring than last year. When I inquired about his improvement, I was told Kirkland was challenged by the staff to take better care of his body because Kirkland spent last year recovering from various leg injuries and the staff was frustrated by the amount of weight he gained. He was required to run throughout this offseason to lose weight. Kirkland is currently listed at 366 pounds and is in better shape. I was told Kirkland will likely need another year of development before he is ready to compete for playing time.

In addition, unless Kirkland’s speed improves, he will likely have to compete at guard.

--- I received a random practice observation this week: “Justice Finkley [Edge] is faster than he was in previous years.” That is just a mental note to file for future reference.

--- Texas defensive lineman Jaray Bledsoe has been impressive so far. Bledsoe has displayed quickness and agility during practice.

--- Longhorn receiver Johntay Cook II is off to a good start. He has displayed explosiveness during practice. I was told Cook is more focused this year than he was a freshman and plays like a receiver with something to prove.

--- The next Longhorn practice will occur on Saturday.

The Texas d-line commitment will take his first ever visit to UT on Friday and then will participate in a 5v5 big man event down in Houston over the weekend. Brown has OVs set to Tennessee, Texas and USC. This week’s visit could go a long way towards determining if Texas ultimately holds onto his pledge.

The Texas commit told us last week that he was trying to get to Austin this weekend. Jackson is about as locked in as a recruit can be.

- The good news for Texas as it relates to 5-star safety Jonah Williams is that the Longhorns are in contention. The bad news is that there’s ground to make up. Williams told OB he has four official visits locked in – Oregon, USC, LSU and Ohio State. He said he’ll likely take his fifth to Oklahoma. I asked if he might take more than five and he said probably not because recruiting is getting so hectic. So no Texas OV, I asked? Williams then said he might have to go ahead and take a sixth so he can squeeze one in for UT. Williams said Oklahoma and Oregon are currently standing out. Texas will get a chance to change that on April 6.

- In order for Texas to land Williams, the Longhorns will also have to win him over on the baseball side. He wants to play both sports in college and did have a conversation with the UT baseball coaches recently to discuss that possibility.

- Speaking of dual-sport athletes, Texas commitment Lance Jackson is considering playing both football and baseball at UT. The Texas baseball coaches called him last week and told him they want him to play at Texas. The baseball coaches talked to the football coaches and they were told the football staff is fine with it. Jackson’s undecided if he’ll do both.

- Jackson is completely locked in with his Texas commitment despite some efforts from schools like Texas A&M and Arkansas to get him to reconsider.

“I still feel solid about it. That’s the only official visit I’m taking,” Jackson said. “I have a great relationship with PK (Pete Kwiatkowski) and I feel like that’s where I want to go.”

“I try not to really entertain (the calls from Arkansas and A&M because I just feel like I’m set on Texas.”

- So who’s the better prospect, Lance Jackson or his brother Landon, who should be a fairly high draft pick out of Arkansas in the 2025 NFL Draft?

“He would tell you this too, I feel like I was blessed with more athleticism,” Lance said. “He’s a worker. We’re both workers. That’s what makes us stand out. We’ll just outwork other people.”

- Jackson on what he likes about Pete Kwiatkowski …

“I like that he’s not fake to you. Most of the time in recruiting, you see fake people who will suck up to you. I’m not a person that really likes that. I want it to feel like how it’s going to be when I get there because that’s what I’m committing to. I feel like he’s not fake to me. He tells me straight up. Coach Gideon too. He’s the safeties coach but is the East Texas recruiter. I’ve got a good relationship with him too. He’s been recruiting me since I was young.”

- Former Texas defensive tackle Desmond “Tank” Jackson was the D-line coach at last week’s Under Armour Camp in Houston. His thoughts on Lance Jackson …

On what stood out …

“He decided to not only play defensive end, but also play nose and three-technique trying to be very versatile. He has outstanding footwork, outstanding hands. He’s a long person. He may be 6-5, 6-6 but he plays like he’s 5-11. He’s going to play low, get off the ball, great motor. Everything about the kid is great – great personality, great character kid.”

On Lance Jackson’s upside:

“With his work ethic and his frame, I think he can definitely be a day one or day two pick (in the NFL).”

On what Lance Jackson needs to work on:

“Right now with him, his parents have done a great job, his coaches have really coached him up. He has a lot of upside about him. The only thing that can stop him is him. The thing with him is just continue to get better and not get complacent with anything.”

- Shadow Creek wide receiver Jacorey Watson was expected to get a full release on Thursday from a foot injury that’s had him sidelined. Watson, who attended UT’s junior day in January, has only two spring visits set up right now (Texas A&M March 30, Baylor April 6). He did say he’d like to come to the UT spring game and is hoping to set up a Texas official visit. Watson has a bit of an informal top five of Texas A&M, UofH, Missouri, LSU and Texas. I’d probably put the Longhorns fifth in that group right now but that could change quickly if the UT coaches prioritize Watson.

- Klein Oak cornerback Courtland Guillory will be in Austin on Saturday and again for an OV on June 7. He has other unofficials planned to TCU, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. OVs are scheduled for Texas, OU, Kansas, Arizona State and UCF.

Oklahoma currently holds the lead here but that could change after Guillory gets his first look at Texas on Saturday (he’ll be accompanied by his father). Texas is in his top three before Guillory has even seen the UT campus.

“I’m sure something will change when I get there and meet the staff,” Guillory said.

- Guillory on what has Texas in a strong position …

“It’s close to home. It’s a good program and they produce guys every year. That’s something I’d love to be a part of considering that it’s not too far from home. It’s still in Texas and growing up I was a Texas fan. I was born and raised in Texas so it’s amazing for Texas to have an interest in me.”

Peptides

Specifically BPC 157, TB-500 as well as Ipamorelin. Ive had some nagging injuries that I would like to get resolved and have heard really good things about using peptides to heal/recover from injuries quicker (amongst other things). Thought I would see if anyone has any experience/knowledge as I'm a bit nervous to try. Thanks and hookem

UT vs UT

Looking forward to the UT vs UT matchup tonight and moving forward in the SEC. Could this be the beginning of another possible rivalry for the Horns! Not that we need one! But have been wondering with the exception of the obvious rivalry we have with ousucks, aggy and the pigs which team in the SEC will immerse as another possible conference rivalry for Texas? Thoughts?

Texas in touch with Portal D-lineman, and he has some interesting ties to Austin

AP23259706580774.jpg

Indiana interior defensive lineman Philip Blidi entered the transfer portal earlier this week and several schools have already been in touch, including Texas.

The 6-3, 295-pound Blidi, who started his college career at Texas Tech before transferring to Indiana last year, is a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility remaining. Since hitting the portal this week, he’s already picked up offers from LSU, Baylor, Washington and Arizona. Several other programs have been in touch and are likely to add to that list. Blidi has official visits set up to Washington (April 5) and Arizona (April 12) and is in discussions about setting one up with LSU.

There are some interesting connections to Texas in this one.

As a high school prospect out of Portales (NM), Blidi was on UT’s radar in the Tom Herman years. He took a Texas visit but never picked up an offer, so the two parties went their separate ways. As a freshman at Texas Tech, Blidi met his now wife. The two have two children, one of which was born in Austin. His in-laws still live in Austin and Blidi and his family visit frequently.

Blidi is expecting to hear from Texas again in the next day or two to further discuss UT’s interest. Should Texas decide to move forward with an offer, Blidi will have a strong interest and I’d expect a visit to be set up quickly.

“They’ve shown interest the past couple of days. They hit me up. I’m supposed to talk to them in the next couple of days about what the opportunity is there,” Blidi said. “So they’re showing some high interest so far. It’s just what the next move is from there, see if it’s a place that ends up offering. If they end up offering, then do they fill needs I have for this last year. Right now, that’s the process with them. Naturally I know a little bit about them from this past year. Just off of that, they check some of those boxes already. I don’t know what else boxes they check until I know that staff more, until they really inform me what they have to offer in terms of developing me for that last year.”

As a grad transfer, Blidi doesn’t have time to mess around. He’s not necessarily in a rush to pick a school, but could be ready to move in about six weeks if he finds the right fit.

“I’m a fifth-year guy. I’m not in a rush in terms of finding the school, but I want to get to know the playbook, get my family moved and settled in,” Blidi said. “I graduate on May 4, could move in May.”

Blidi is familiar with the Texas program (he even has a connection through OB), including the success the Longhorns enjoyed last year and UT’s defensive scheme.

“Just watching what they did defensively last year, the production from the interior line,” Blidi said when asked what has Texas on his radar. “That’s something I love and I need going into this year. I need to have a highly productive year, be disruptive. I’m a disruptive player if you watch the film, and I’d be allowed to do that in that system. The culture has changed around to a winning culture, and that’s important going into my last year. It’s a no-brainer, that’s my wife’s hometown.”

It’ll be a business decision for Blidi but Texas certainly checks a lot of boxes. We’ll keep an eye on this one to see how things develop and will keep you all updated.

We're dancing in Round 2-Thanks Terry-Be Positive OB or Shut the F++k Up

Tomorrow is the first time since the 2008-09 season that Texas will play in the second round of the Dance in consecutive years under the same coach. Let that sink in...it has been over 15 Years since a HC at Texas played in Round 2 in back-to-back years.

Rodney Terry has done what no other HC at UT (the much more heralded trio of Rick Barnes, Shaka and Chris Beard) has done for 15 years. I am not saying Terry is the second coming of John Wooden and I am not even saying he is the coach to get us to the Final Four this year or ever in his tenure in Austin. (BTW the last time we were in the Final Four was over 20 years ago...20 Years...Two-Zero.)

What I am saying is, try to be positive, supportive and show a lil gratitude for what we have this year due to Rodney Terry for the remainder of the time we Dance. It is the longest Dancing we have done in a long, long time.

If you do not have anything nice to say, listen to your inner-mother and do not say anything at all. Many thanks Terry...Hook 'em and beat Barnes and the Vols...

OT: The most important Texan you may never have heard of — John Nance “Cactus Jack” Garner

Many/most Texans have heard of Garner State Park on the Frio River, but I’d wager most of them have little idea about who it’s named for:
  • John Nance Garner (1868-1967) is one of only two men ever to serve as both Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives and Vice President of the United States (Schuyler Colfax was the other).
  • Born and raised in East Texas, but Garner decided to practice law in South Texas in Uvalde.
  • Ran for Uvalde County judge against a rancher’s daughter whom he defeated in the election, and then married.
  • Served for two terms in the Texas House of Representatives and unsuccessfully attempted to get the prickly pear cactus named as the Texas state flower, and so earned the nickname “Cactus Jack.”
  • Served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 32 years until he decided to run for president in 1932, and became Franklin D. Roosevelt’s vice-presidential running mate when Garner cut a deal with FDR to give him Garner’s delegates to get Roosevelt over the nomination threshold.
  • Served two terms as vice-president under Roosevelt, successfully piloting many of FDR’s New Deal programs through Congress.
  • Famously said serving as vice president was “not worth a bucket of warm piss.“
  • Broke with Roosevelt over the size of the New Deal federal deficit and Roosevelt’s attempt to pack the Supreme Court.
  • A union leader said Garner was “a labor–baiting, poker–playing, whiskey–drinking, evil old man.“
  • Garner decided to run for president in 1940 and was the favorite, thinking Roosevelt would stand by his pledge not to serve more than two terms. Nope. Didn’t happen.
  • When Roosevelt decided to run again, FDR replaced Garner with Henry Wallace as his running mate.
  • Garner then retired to Uvalde, but was often consulted by Democratic politicians.
  • President John F. Kennedy called to wish Garner happy birthday on the morning of November 22, 1963, the day Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.

Road House trailer

Amazon MGM Studios has released the first trailer for its remake of the 1989 action classic “Road House,” which will be available to stream globally on Prime Video on March 21.

The feature stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a former UFC fighter struggling to make ends meet. After the owner of Flordia Keys roadhouse finds him sleeping in his car, Dalton becomes a bouncer and finds himself roped into a war of outlaws and bikers (including actual mixed martial artist, turned first-time actor, Conor McGregor) and a developer determined to build a lavish resort for “rich assholes.”

“Shrinking” star Jessica Williams, who confirmed to Variety last summer she’d be joining the cast, plays the roadhouse owner. She described Gyllenhaal as an “insane actor” in the interview.

“He’s an amazing actor. I was so excited to do ‘Road House’ with Jake Gyllenhaal. He’s an insane actor. Every time, you’re learning. My job as an actor, especially on ‘Shrinking,’ is to make everyone look good by knowing what the hell I’m doing on set,” Williams said. “I love volleying, and I got to do that with Jake.”

Rounding out the cast are Billy Magnussen (“No Time to Die”), Daniela Melchior (“The Suicide Squad”), Gbemisola Ikumelo (“A League of Their Own”), Lukas Gage (“The White Lotus”), Hannah Love Lanier (“A Black Lady Sketch Show”), Travis Van Winkle (“You”), B.K. Cannon (“Why Women Kill”), Arturo Castro (“Broad City”), Dominique Columbus (“Ray Donovan”), Beau Knapp (“Seven Seconds”) and Bob Menery.

Doug Liman (“Edge of Tomorrow”) directs the movie from a script written by Anthony Bagarozzi and Charles Mondry. After producing the original 1989 film, Joel Silver is back producing for his company Silver Pictures along with JJ Hook, Alison Winter and Aaron Auch, who serve as executive producers.

The original film grossed a modest $30 million against a $15 million budget but has since become a cult classic and stands as one of Patrick Swayze’s most beloved roles.

“I’m thrilled to put my own spin on the beloved ‘Road House’ legacy,” Liman shared in a statement. “And I can’t wait to show audiences what Jake and I are going to do with this iconic role.”

Silver added, “The original’ Road House’ has a special place in my heart, and I am so excited to bring this newly imagined version to audiences around the world.”
