Advice needed - fair criticism or are we becoming too soft?

I'm a high school principal in the DC area for a private school. Last night, I was at our girls' varsity basketball game. We were playing at the away school, but I live nearby and decided I wanted to attend. During the game, the away team was shooting a free throw. A mom from our school yelled, "Miss it!" right before they shot the ball. The student athlete made the free thrown and the fans from my team sort of laughed at the adult and she laughed, too. She then yelled out, with a bit of laughter in her voice, "well miss this one then!"

A male student walked over from the other side of the bleachers and yelled at our parent, "We don't do that kind of thing here! Stop!" He then repeated it, again yelling toward the parent. Two parents from his side came over and pulled him back. Our parent, to her credit, didn't respond negatively and said she didn't want to get into it with a student. She remained mostly quiet the rest of the game. I walked over to that area of our fans and said it would probably be best if we cheered for our team and not against their team. There were no further issues or interactions for the rest of the night.

This morning, my athletic director and I received an email from the away team's coach apologizing that the student confronted our parent, but implying that the adult's behavior was severely inappropriate. Here is the coach's narrative, with a couple of names taken out:

"I wanted to quickly follow up to let you know that I spoke to my student last night after you left and he understands how he could have handled that situation differently and apologizes. As I mentioned to you last night, (our coach's name), he is a member of our student-athlete leadership committee and just last week, our leaders got together with a group from (other private school 1) and (other private school 2) to work on our new league Code of Conduct. I am proud that he felt empowered to step up when he felt cheering was crossing a line but we discussed how that situation could be handled in the future.

On our end, we are working on how to display good sportsmanship and what that looks like in our gym. Where we feel the line was crossed is that adults were the ones making targeted comments (yelling, "Miss it") at the student shooting free throws. It is one thing for kids to cheer like that but we feel as though adults should be held to a different standard. It makes it an unsportsmanlike environment when that happens and we hope in the future to avoid those situations. "

I'm looking for some fair perspective here. I don't feel like what the parent did was that over the line and when I was growing up playing basketball in Texas, we got a lot worse than that from fans. When I was a volleyball official in the 2000s and 2010s around Austin, I certainly heard worse from the fans. I do believe that you can cross the line and become personal, which isn't appropriate. However, this felt like pretty low on the inappropriate level to me.

I'd love to hear from all of you regarding your perspective. Did my parent cross a line? Should we address this and ensure that we talk about the appropriate fan behavior? Is this coach being too soft?

Our men's bball team has its share of dogs!

I like the depth on this team. No one panicked and body language was good even when Syracuse got that one point lead. Our players know Tre Johnson is our star and don't resent him shooting. This is a team that hustles, so we will scratch out lots of ugly wins. Weaver is Johnny on the spot. He gets those loose balls!

Texas v. Texas A&M 1995: One of My Faves!

What an incredible win this was! Aggy had been whipping our ass for 10 years. This year John Mackovic turned the corner, and Mack kept it going.

Also, the breakout game for one Ricky Williams as a true Freshman. Also the breakout party for Bryant Westbrook — to this day the hardest hitting DB I have ever seen at Texas. Interestingly both were from SoCal (Ricky from San Diego, and Westbrook from Oceanside).

Yet more. This game we clinched the last SWC CS.

And in less than 9 days — the rivalry returns!!

RUN THE ROCK!! and take Deep Shots | Players to Watch vs. Kentucky

Players to Watch for Kentucky

  • #6 Dane Key, WR and #7 Barion Brown, WR - 1 Thing: While Brown has dealt with injuries this year and disappointment compared to expectations at Kentucky over the last two years. In the three big games this year (@ Tennessee, @ Ole Miss and Georgia), both Key and Brown have played and combined for 24 receptions, 322 yards, and 1 touchdown. Both are plus-size receivers with great speed and pose matchup problems for Malik Muhammed, predominantly if Brown and his 4.3 speed is near 100% health.

  • #0 Deone Walker, DL - 1 Thing: Listed a 6-6 345 lbs, Walker entered the season as a near consensus preseason first-team All-American and consensus top-10 NFL draft. While the statistics haven't shown up for Walker this year quite like they did during his sophomore season, he seems to have slimmed up a bit while demanding double and triple teams on a snap-by-snap basis, allowing teammates to create pressures and impact the game. The Biggest thing with Walker is his athleticism at 345 lbs, it's rare at the defensive tackle position.

Some Mark Stoops Comments on Texas during Tuesday Press Conference

Q: Do you take anything from Akransas playing Texas really well on Saturday? can you identify any weaknesses on this team?

A: "The eye test, they are as strong as anyone in the country. Tell me one group? Dynamic play-caller, great coach - OL is completely solid - RB, two great ones.. maybe more, probably four. WR Room is arguably the best in the country. Dynamic Tight End, Tight Ends. Defensively the front four, they lost some guys who are pros, and replaced them in the portal with pros, really deep and really big. I'd say arguably again, the best secondary in the country, bar none. When you put all that together, pretty solid team."

Q: Characteristics of a Sarkisian Team
A: "Creative, Creative - eye candy is term used a lot across the country. He does a great job of marrying the run and the pass. And then a fantastic job in the screen game off of that. So you're thinking run, you're thinking pass, come back to a screen, he ties it together as good as anybody."

Q: Growing up, any memory of Texas?
A: "No not as a kid, but when Bob got to Oklahoma, I guess from 1999 on, with that rivalry, I guess you could say the Stoops family was pretty dialed into that game and I guess that's when I really started watching them closely."

Q: What is the status on D'Eryk Jackson?
A: "Ya it's very disappointing that he had to have season-ending surgery, so we will have discussions with him after that."
Note: Jackson is 6th in tackles and 2nd in Passes Deflected in 2024.

2) As above, I will be in town for the weekend and looking to attend my first-ever Longhorn game. I don't need good seats, but if anyone has a cheap pair (2) or a pair they don't plan on using, please let me know!

Let's have a great end of the week 🤘

Just how big is the universe this video puts it in pretty good perspective.

It is hard to imagine just how big the universe is, but this video does a pretty good job. It breaks galaxies down to the size of Cheerios. He decides to fill the pool with Cheerios, any guesses on how many pools will be filled? Tough to imagine that there’s not life in a few of those Cheerios.

OT - SIAP: What do you think of this parent and the police?

From The Free Press:

Increasingly, police officers in the U.S. are targeting hands-off parents for their “negligence.” Take the case of Brittany Patterson. Last month, the 41-year-old mother of four from Fannin County, Georgia, was arrested after her 10-year-old son Soren was spotted a mile from his home on a spontaneous visit to see his friend’s grandmother. Patterson is fighting the charge of “reckless conduct,” and could face up to a year in jail if convicted.

Last week, the police body cam footage of her arrest went viral:

It didn’t matter that Patterson had left Soren at home with her father while she attended a doctor’s appointment. Or that no harm came to her son, who wandered off without adult permission. He was spotted by a stranger, who called 911. The police returned him home safely, and Patterson was home within 20 minutes. But later police returned, placing Patterson in handcuffs and locking her in a jail cell. Now, authorities say Patterson must adopt a “safety plan” that includes monitoring her son’s location with an app.
Leighton Woodhouse spoke to Patterson, who told him the arrest was “humiliating” and “traumatic.” He also spoke to Lenore Skenazy, of Free-Range Kids, who has documented cases like this all over the country. “The culture has changed,” said Skenazy, who partly blames cell phones for giving us “the ability to call anything in,” and also because of “a pervasive belief that any child alone must be in danger, and any parent who lets their child be alone must be terrible.”

Mortgage Rates

We bought a house for my MIL after she moved here from Nam last year and the rate is around 7%. Just doing some quick googling I see some places showing rates in the 3.5-4.5% range online and when I called the broker we used he said everything is still up at 6.5%.

Those of you in the business does this seem consistent?

House was roughly $300k, we've been paying $3400/mo all in on the note/insurance/taxes and we co-signed with her. I believe the note has around $270k atm.
