Annual Offseason Thread of Firearms

Just purchased a Springfield Echelon 4” compact. Had my eye on the Hellcat for a few years, decided to pull the trigger on a great deal (Springfield was offering a free upgrade *3 extra mags, red dot sight and bag*. Perfect for EDC.
Fuuuuuuuuuck. Where'd you score that deal?

My super BE has a conventional stock. But on a snow hunt a few years back, I did manage to drop a triple. The last goose was at least 60, maybe 70 yards away.
I pheasant hunt at least once a year. (Usually)
I had the older model- about 15 years old, pistol grip, etc-- and I upgraded to this one.

I load that first with 6, then 6, then 4. I'll admit, I've had them blow from between my legs in knee deep snow and it does scare the sh!t out of you, and you get trigger happy.... Then you settle down and that 4 will reach out there and touch them.

We had one come up, get in the wind and go far right- I was walking on the far right- he went over my head and directly away from me-- I had time to manually eject two rounds, get that 4 cycled in, drop to one knee, aim, and hear my Nebraska buddy yell out "That's WAY too far!" before I pulled the trigger and watched him go down.

I turn back to a line of about 8 other hunters and shout out "Does anybody know any hard games?".

They were not amused.

do not fall for those cheaper models....they do not have the power. This thing will almost make you wish you had more roaches.....

Question for the Dungeon Security Council concerning SHTF scenarios.
HYPOTHETICALLY if someone had A LOT (more than 100 but less than 5000) of 45 acp rounds, would a carbine in 45 acp be a viable choice. Basically having the same caliber on your hip as on your shoulder. Or would you go 22 mag for your rifle mode and keep the 45 for pistol use?
I think 45 would be a good choice for a "common" round for both handgun and carbine. Other options could include 9mm and 22 mag. Or, if using a revolver, one could use .45 acp or .38/.357. But with most any handgun cartridge, you will be trading long gun range for commonality.
My general thoughts for SHTF scenarios might be: 308s for guys, 5.56s for gals, 9mm for pistols. I think a good stock of those 3 calibers might be good to have along with a bunch of .22s. One could also maintain lesser quantities of other calibers for certain longer range/higher power rifles. I would think all of the above calibers might be more common in that scenario and minimize any risk of the firearms becoming useless.
Speaking hypothetically of course.

Nice thread resurrection.

I've always had an affinity for lever guns and have harvested quite a few whitetails with a .308 BLR (also shoots NATO 7.62x51). So when I found a pristine first year (1955) Winchester 88 chambered in .308 I decided to pull the trigger. Beautiful rifle that I may never shoot, but if the day comes, it will be another that can handle any .308s that may be stockpiled.
If you’re a lever action rifle aficionado, Henry has a new lever action in 5.56 that takes AR mags, and doesn’t look like an abortion. It’s been getting pretty good reviews, and I’m intrigued.

Vector G2 SMG. You'll love it.
HK MP5 is always nice.
If you REALLY want to spend some dolla bills- LWRC SMG 45.
Damn! Those are nasty. I’ve been looking at the TNW Aero Survival and the Gen 3 Just Right Carbine. Both are more of an AR style design.

Here's the reality of SHTF-

There's gonna be PLENTY of 9mm just lying around. Every ghetto gangster from Long Beach to Long Island owns a 9. They won't last long.
So you can Glock it and MP5 it all day long with 9mm. But as @GuaranteedFresh! Will no doubt tell you- that 9mm is great if you can T box everyone. But it's hard to T box someone at distance with a 9mm..... so you better get up close. And if your goal is to be a rampage gunfighter, shwacking all comers--- then by all means, 9mil it up and go to town.
Personally, I dont plan on letting anyone closer to me than a 338 Lapua Magnum travels. And if you somehow manage to get inside of 800 yards of me, then I've got a DMR full of 7.62 NATO that I can shoot at you until the fvckin barrel melts. When the barrel melts, no problemo because I've got a backup.

If I'm shooting 9s at you, it's because I've done something wrong.

Magnum in 338 lapua! Damn man, you really want to see parts flying! Lol.

I probably already said this before but my aging brain can't recall so whatever. I have a bud that is a big gun bro but no hunting experience that wanted to drop his 1st whitetail a few yrs back.
I told him to come on out and even though my blind is close enough to pet them, don't bring a 22lr because I ain't tracking. Dude busts out his 338, we both laugh....then hit the blind. You best believe I'm sitting in on this one.
We watched a bunch of young bucks come and go before we decide to drop a meat doe for the day. He asked where to shoot and I told him with that cannon, anywhere you don't plan on salvaging.

He domed her. Holy hell, bits of head everywhere. There were ant trails picking parts off my feeder for a few days afterwards.

That's one vicious round in buckshot territory.

I've had the pump shotgun style bug-a-salt for about 3ys now. Absolutely a must have item when cooking outside. I'm telling you we can go through a entire salt carton in a week just from blasting flys & wasps.
Way more fun than anticipated.

I was in S Dakota with 4 other guys, one of them an aggy. Of the 15 birds for a 5 man limit, I shot 9 of them. My aggy buddy was having a hard time distinguishing cocks from hens. I was wearing a UT windbreaker. I told David that if he'd wear the orange jacket, he'd kill more birds. He told me that hell hadn't frozen over yet.

Haaaaaaaa

One year I went with my old man and little brother- up to Mitchell.
Private land. Dogs. Very gentlemanly.

There's a creek cutting through the land and Dad is up on one bank, my brother up on the other. I'm walking the ice on the frozen river zig zag style- kicking brush along the river side. Solidly frozen river. We get up to a beaver dam and I walk off the ice around the bank and back onto the ice behind the beaver dam.
Because I'm stupid- I dont realize the ice around the beaver dam isn't as thick as the rest of the ice...... and I fall through. Waste deep. I'm literally surrounded by ice at my waste.....
I lay my shotgun down on the ice and try to belly crawl out- nope..... ice breaks. I move a little further and try to climb up on the ice.
Nope. It breaks too.
At this point, I grab my shotgun and start breaking the ice with the butt of it, toward the bank.
I make it over after about 30 seconds, I'm soaked from the belly down.
This whole time, where's my father and brother?
Did they rush down to help me? Give me a hand to pull me out of the water? Show the slightest bit of concern that I could be hypothermic?

Oh hell no. They're pissing their pants with laughter as I'm busting up ice trying to haul my own ass out of a frozen fvcking river.

My Dad finally stops laughing and goes "Hey..... that looked like it was cold."

Asshole.

As a father of 2 now adult boys, I’m guessing your Dad still laughs about it today if he’s able.

My dad passed away in 2014 unexpectedly. But yes, it was one of his epic stories he would tell-- usually to others while I was within earshot.

Sorry to hear that he’s already passed (mine passed in 2002) but based on the stories you’ve shared about hunting trips and other things, he left you a good road map for raising your son. As I’ve aged and watched my sons grow up, I’ve learned that a father’s most important job is to show his sons how to be a man, husband, and father. Everything else is just noise.

Agreed.... And the being a man part includes- must be able to start fires without a match. Must eat what you kill unless it's vermin. Never start fights, only end them. Never strike a woman. Don't waste good booze. Always say sir and ma'am. One shot, one kill. And last but not least, it's medium rare or get the fvck out.

It’s “never hit a lady.”

I’ll fight a woman.

Well I'm eye-balling a slick little setup from Crosman. Something in a pump action .177 cal to deal these feckin' squirrels that keep eating up my tomatoes and okra....

Freeper....I feel your pain. Trouble is, there are more damned squirrels that pellets available. I suggest planting Marigold all around the tomatoes ....the old folks swear by it......hmmmm....just realized.......I AM the old folks!

Oh I swear by marigolds too. Never had a problem with any garden where we had them planted but didn't do it this year. Now the little bastiges are going to be eyeing my figs and persimmons. They must feel some pain....

I hate squirrels and certainly agree that pellet guns can be somewhat (maybe minimally) effective and absolutely fun. But it does require vigilance. So I have also incorporated a more passive approach to squirrel management.

If you're not familiar with conibear 110 traps check them out. I set them on top of my fence near the edge of the house which tends to be a favored squirrel route to the roof. Drill holes in pecans to load on trap trigger. Be sure to attach eye hook for the chain anchor on inside of fence so that trapped squirrels fall and hang on inside of fence to avoid upsetting neighborhood Karen's.

Bonus is it's an almost certain quick kill and avoids damaging anymeat for those inclined to eat the bastards

These are quite pricey but automatic & kill continuously. I guess just set a bucket underneath 1 and viola!

Since this is a thread-o-pew pew, lemme throw out a general warning.
Suppressors are being removed from the NFA in the Big Beautiful Bill as it currently stands. This will cause a complete sellout of all suppressors for a good while and unfortunately same thing for all subsonic munitions.

I usually always grab a box or 2 when out and about so my stock is healthy enough to hold off but if you might run out within a year ya might want to buy before the masses backlog supply.

Great heads-up on subsonic rounds. They won't go bad or lose value in any case. But do you really anticipate any relaxation of regulations on suppressors? Would be very surprised to see that happen, but also very happy.

Wait-- are you sure the BBB takes suppressors off the list?

Yes, the BBB removes suppressors from NFA control so all that will be required is a standard background check. The House passed it but the senate is changing some things around so the house will have to pass it again. As it stands now, silencers will no longer require tax stamps. Could easily change though.

But um....... get your checkbook ready.

Might have to start picking up pennies in Walmart parking lots for that one. Interesting build.

Ok look, I'm definitely no AR elitist gun range show & tell barbie type BUT..... almost $6k and the 308 lower is dpms? I have a custom built back seat ar from dpms that only cost me around $800 albeit was about 15yrs ago but still.

Those Huxwrx Ventum 12K suppressors go for $1500 more or less but are really pointless on a short barrel home defense shotgun. A $700 weatherby 12g semi-a sawed off will do just as well.

I considered ordering the honey badger from live q or die for about $3100 but decided to just buy a 300blk upper for a couple bills instead. My good old faithful Omega300 still performs with the best commercial cans out there.

Better than that Knights Armament one in the SOPMOD?
