He coached at TCU, under Wacker, for few years around 1990 and crossed paths with Strong when Holtz hired him for WR coach at USCe. 30 years of coaching with a third of that in the NFL; including 5 years under Tony Dungy at Tampa Bay. Doesn't seem like someone to help install the new offense.

EDIT- Also was at the U during its heyday. The occasional South Florida guy would be nice.

Well, if he can teach route discipline and downfield blocking to the young'uns, how does that not help the offense?

Forgot Wacker ran the veer and the Briles' offense is the spread veer. So he should have a knowledge base to help with the install.

A veteran guy on young offensive staff could be good too.

From the Statesman-

New Texas receivers coach Charlie Williams said he’s looking forward to coaching again in the college ranks after spending the past four seasons in the NFL.

On Monday, UT announced the hiring of Williams, a former Indianapolis Colts assistant, and released statements from Williams and head coach Charlie Strong.

Williams called coaching at Texas “an unbelievable opportunity.”

“After coaching in the NFL for the past four years, I’m excited to get back on a college campus to help these young student-athletes grow and develop both as players on the field and students in the classroom. It gives me a chance to coach and teach young student-athletes again, and I’m excited for the challenges ahead.”

Williams, who spent the past four seasons with the Colts before being let go in January, expressed excitement to be involved in Texas’ new uptempo offense.

“I had a chance to talk at length with Sterlin (Gilbert) and Matt (Mattox) on my visit to Austin and they’re two young coaches who have been a part of some great offenses over the years,” Williams said. “The fast break, no-huddle offense, as I like to call it, is going to need our wide receiver group to play a big role in it. I’m looking forward to working with the offensive staff, teaching our players and getting things going at Texas.

“First and foremost, our receiver group is going to be about ‘we.’ We’ll work hard each and every day to get better, and it doesn’t matter who gets the credit. I know we have a lot of young talent, and we’ll work together to find our identity as a group and develop in all of the areas it entails to be a great receiver. I’ve always felt that if you master all of the little things, the big things take care of themselves. And that will be our goal as a unit.”

With the hiring Williams, Strong has now finalized his staff with four new hires to complement second-year tight ends coach Jeff Traylor.

“Charlie (Williams) is a well-respected veteran coach who has been developing a lot of great receivers at the collegiate and NFL levels for a long time,” Strong said. “He’s a high-energy coach who we are really excited to be adding to our staff. Charlie will do a tremendous job working with all of our young, talented receivers and rounds out a terrific offensive coaching staff. You could see he connected with all of them during his interview and that they were all on the same page. I know he’ll bring a lot of expertise and passion to our team and is a coach our guys will really respond to.”

Keyshawn, too.

"Very good," Keyshawn Johnson, Senior said. "I enjoyed playing for him, we had a great relationship and still do to this day. He will get the best out of the Texas WR's and will command the respect of them, they will love him over time. He coached me to a Pro Bowl."

Keyshawn is a Strong fan and brought Keyshawn, Jr and a group of '17 California all stars for a visit last year.

You must be drunk to be mad about a guy with 10 years of NFL experience coming in to be dad for all the young coaches on that side of the ball.

LOL, when I saw his resume, I thought, damn the dude can't seem to keep a job.

If Keyshawn and The Quan love him, then I know our receivers will love him as well.

and has had a lotta jobs..why? Colts receivers from 2012-2014. Previous coaching stops include New Mexico State, TCU, Minnesota, Miami (FL), Tampa Bay Bucs, South Carolina, Arizona, and North Carolina.......none of these schools have won hardly anything maybe Arizona looked good for a while and NFL Colts and Tampa Bay...haven't seen them do anything recently...all I am saying we coulda done better

Quan Cosby loves him. Quan played under him.
The Quan seems to have played under a lotta people according to his bio, just because the Quan loves him, doesn't mean anything, the Quan's probably loved a lotta people, this is the reason Texas hired him because the Quan loved him?.......LOL! That's a helluva reference..

Why so many jobs? Because he's a position coach - they move around - that's what they do. A position coach who spends a significant portion of his career at one spot is the outlier. As with most position coaches - his tenure was generally tied to the HC that hired him.

But, just for giggles:

1993-1995 Miami - Williams was brought in as WR coach in the last couple of years of Erickson's tenure. After Erickson left Miami, Williams was one of the few coaches that Butch Davis kept on staff. Williams left Miami to take an NFL job with Tony Dungy.

1996-2001 Tampa Bay (NFL) - Williams was on Dungy's staff for Dungy's entire tenure in Tampa Bay. When Dungy left Tampa so did Williams.

2003 South Carolina - Williams spent one season on Lou Holtz staff (where he worked with Strong) before leaving for another NFL job.

2004-2006 Arizona Cardinals (NFL) - Williams was hired by Dennis Green shortly after Green got the Arizona job. In 2006 Green was fired as HC and Williams and the rest of the staff were let go.

2007-2011 North Carolina - Williams was hired by new NC Head Coach Butch Davis (who he had worked with at Miami for a season) to coach WR's. Davis was fired as Head Coach in 2010, but Williams was kept on staff by the new Head Coach (and former DC) Everitt Withers. Withers was fired following the 2011 season, and Williams was out the door with him.

2012-2015 Indianapolis (NFL) Williams was hired by new Head Coach Chuck Pagano to be a part of his staff in Indy. In 2015 Williams was moved to RB coach to replace former coach David Walker. Early 2016 Irsay demanded Pagano clean out his staff - Williams was one of 6 Colts assistants let go.

In the last 23 years - Williams has only had one stint that lasted less than three years, and that was the South Carolina job he left to go back to the NFL. Hell, in the context of a the life of a NFL/college position coach Williams has been pretty stable.

Even with South Carolina, Williams average length of stay at each job was 3.5 years.

For a coach entering only his 3rd year it seems Strong has sure had a lot of staff turnover.

Why do you even bother to say Hook'em when all you ever post is negative sh*t?

For a coach entering only his 3rd year it seems Strong has sure had a lot of staff turnover.

No doubt there has been a lot of turnover - but the vast majority of that was the original offensive staff Strong hired. Coach Strong admitted the mistake and is content to now rip the bandaid rather than tug slowly. Les Koenning, Joe Wickline, Shawn Watson, Bruce Chambers were all mistakes Strong made when first putting his staff together.

Norvell leaving was an unfortunate result of being named interim OC and then being demoted back down to WR coach for an OC and offense he didn't know. He took a raise and a promotion by going to ASU.

Tommie Robinson took a raise and promotion at USC.

On the defensive side they've only lost two coaches in two years (so far). If there hadn't been such a massacre on the offensive coaching side the loss of two defensive coaches would seem like normal coaching attrition.

Cause position coaches usually get fired alongside with Coordinators and HCs. Which is why I don't get all the fretting over Norvell and Robinson departing. When you change the OC and move to a new offense the new guy usually brings in his guys for his offense. Robinson and Norvell were allowed time to find landing spots instead of being fired.

Excellent post, but just a heads-up that you shouldn't spend too much time on belldOUche. He's not actually interested in discussion. He's just here to troll.

It was a good response, especially the first paragraph and drives home the fact that only at Texas can a coach be paid $5 million per year for on the job training. The more I see the more I truly believe those who believe this was a token hire.

Only when it keeps good players at ou then?
I don't condone it. As to my other comment about Strong. I can't think of anyone other that the current POTUS who has been a bigger disappointment on a big stage than Strong. Do you agree? I cannot imagine making that kind of money given the results to date. Strong is on the 3rd OC in as many years. His reluctance to change DC's is pretty telling. UT finished 106th in total defense. Come on. Did not go to a bowl game, finished 6-6 after finishing 6-7 in his initial year and getting blown out in the bowl. Any normal thinking human looks at this whole deal and quickly realized that something doesn't quite fit the norm as it relates to normal workplace expectations.

...a bigger disappointment on a big stage than Strong.
Louisville
year one, 7-6, bowl win
year two, 7-6, bowl loss
year three, 11-2, BCS bowl win
year four, 12-1, bowl win

Texas
year one, 6-7, bowl loss
year two, 5-7, no bowl
year three ?

Took three years to turn Louisville around after cleaning house in year one and anchored by the two classes he recruited.

I wouldnt call his time at Louisville a disappointment and his time at UT is as yet an unwritten book, even if there was some pain in the early going. I expect we will see improvement, eight or more wins and no blow outs this season. I also expect we'll spank that sooner ass once more.

Rex you're a good poster but even you would have to admit that he had an over achieving qb in a weak conference and his claim to fame was beating a bad Will Mushamp led Florida team. Again beating the Sooners with a new OC, new qb was not really a huge accomplishment early in the year.

I have pointed out some things Strong screwed up on in my view.....I am not ready to give up on Strong yet.....his recruiting has been excellent and I think the new coaches will get us going in the right direction.

He beat ou with a subpar Texas team.....imagine what he can do with a Truly good Texas team?

The political nonsense is just that.....nonsense.

Scholz perhaps you have me confused, I would never attempt to beat up a girl and don't condone that behavior
Sure. Talk is cheap. You and every other $ooner fan have no problem with Stoops signing and/or keeping girl abuser after girl abuser. There has been zero backlash for him after Chaisson, Mixon, DGB, Shannon, et al. That's a simple fact.

Swvahorn he beat an OU team with a new offense, new OC, new qb etc. good win but nothing to write home about being an earlier season win

What would you propose I do? Write Stoops a letter?

Really? Obama saved the US auto industry and kept the US out of a 2nd great depression. He also didn't allow the worst attack on US soil in history like his predecessor.

What would you propose I do? Write Stoops a letter?
That would be a start. Not buying tickets. Calling a radio show. Some public condemnation for such low moral behavior. Something. Which there has been zero from any of your fans. Zero.

Scholz you're a good poster and I get along with you pretty well but one has to not look further than the ridiculous p5+1 nuclear agreement with Iran which by the way was not signed by Iran but instead of forcing their hand, he went ahead and lifted sanctions and the influx of 'refugees' that he describes as women and children, as prime recent examples of his failures.
