It really allows you to see how complicated the language of NFL defenses are, even back in the 1980s. Ryan’s playbook was meticulous and seemed to account for every possible scenario. Those pages were the guide for every member of the historic defense, and it serves as a great reminder of the coach’s brilliance.

Chicago is mourning the loss of the architect of what is considered the greatest defense in NFL history with the passing of Buddy Ryan on Tuesday. He made his mark on the NFL with his “46” defense, named after the jersey number of his strong safety, Doug Plank, whose role in the formation was critical for its success.

If you’ve ever really wanted to dive into the Xs and Os of that 1985 Buddy Ryan defense, now is your chance. Below is a scanned copy of every page of the late defensive coordinator’s playbook from that year,

Awesome find FB! We'd have to get another 3-4yrs eligibility with our guys before attempting to run half of that book.

That is a awesome defense ... just think it shut down every team for a perfect season all the way to the Super Bowl Never happen again, Lotta people forgot what FB used to be like.., I remember watching Johnny Unitas play for the Colts and Meredith and Eddie Lebaron for the Cowboys and Night Train Lane for the Rams...what history I have seen, believe it or not it used to be the Dallas Texans instead of Cowboys

That's not a complex defensive playbook. In the 80s NFL you could base out of a 4-3 and walk your SS and Will Backer to the LOS. You could also get away with heavy with 0 blitz schemes. 0 blitz worked well in the 80's when you could mug receivers all over the field. In the big 12 in 2018 you would get killed if you had 6 dudes on the LOS. You would have to base out of their Nickle Packages and that really isn't running the 46.
