Cliffs notes: Suddenly, the Longhorns’ 2018 defensive line class won’t stop growing. A few days following Daniel Carson’s commitment, Dunham (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) defensive end Mike Williams announced his commitment to Texas. He’s the 23rd member of the 2018 class.
Rankings: Rivals.com rates Williams as a three-star prospect (5.7 Rivals Rating), the No. 28 strongside defensive end, and the No. 18 player in Louisiana.
Key Offers: LSU and Tennessee both offered and both received official visits from Williams. He also holds offers from Alabama, Ole Miss, and Tulane.
Evaluation: Listed at 6-2, 250 pounds, Williams actually played quarterback in high school too. This is seemingly a classic example of taking a big, strong, athletic body with playmaking ability and quickness and projecting it along the defensive line. In the limited snaps shown on tape at defensive end, Williams looks as you’d expect watching him play quarterback: quick and powerful. Physically, he has a big, powerful lower half and is light on his feet. Texas just landed a player with a lot of upside.
Why it matters: Not only is Texas’s defensive line class beginning to really grow, it’s also landing big, strong, physically gifted players that could profile at multiple spots.
