Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend: Is Casey better than Spencer Rattler?

People have called Flood stupid, incompetent, a meathead, didn't know how to coach for weeks in the Deep Dig threads among a bunch of other threads. Alex has also implied as much himself. I know because I brought up the discussion of how it always takes just a couple games for everyone to turn on the OL coach.

People were asking "how do we keep hiring the wrong OL coach" all over the place. You know the tone around here for stuff like that.
I mean... the word fan is short for fanatic. ;)

No doubt, but those extra few hundred yards could be the difference between first-team and second-team.

Extremely valid point. And in principle we probably both agree that it's best for Bijan longterm to save some tred on those tires. Which at this point is what I feel is most important.

Our inboxes are jammed up weekly asking what time things will go down. @Ketchum will confirm.
I get weekly requests for us to do a content piece where all we do is go back and forth on a few random topics.

It's hard to contain the popularity.

The simplest explanation for the struggles is that there aren't any true plus-players in the group and they aren't that good as a group.

Hmm . . . that’s not what you were saying about this exact same group just a few months ago:

* Herb Hand might not be able to recruit five-stars, but he coached the hell out of his group in the final few weeks of the season. I don't really have a single bad thing to say about a group that had a bunch of young kids playing up and down the line-up.

I'm not sure I'd have West Virginia that far down the list. They went into Norman and if not for the bad snap late in OU territory they may have taken down OU. WVU defense is probably better than Arkansas' defense.

The middle class in the Big 12 is just a pile of teams.

It was a good question. ;)
So, my guess is that if you’re projecting you’d have Texas v OU in the CG, which at this point looks like at least a 50/50 prop to win. However, you’re using a parachute and basically saying that you think the field has a greater chance to be in the game than Texas right now. Both can be true.

You asked: "You now feel winning the Big 12 in season one is 50/50 or better."

I just don't think I would call Texas the favorite to win the Big 12 yet at a better than 50-50 clip.

True but until you see a few more games, I'm not sure you really have an accurate picture on who the middle class is in the Big 12.

Oh, i think we know the teams. The order can change on a dime./

Spiers is the man in BoB.

He'd have been in jail in 2021 and deservedly so.

It's one of the great things about the show. It makes you ask tough questions and the characters ask really tough questions of themselves. In the search for constant black and white, the show paints the world as it is in a low of grays.

Okay, we'll see;) Put me down for now saying WVU is going to be a much tougher game than Baylor is.

BTW hope you're enjoying the Woodlands.

I know, I was trying to walk you into a corner. You dodged it. Haha. Would you have Texas as the second team in the game if you picked today and had to pick two teams? If so, would you think that game would be a coin flip?

I think it'll be a Texas/OU rematch.

So far, so good in. TW!

Next 5 games

at TCU
vs. OU
vs. OSU
at Baylor
at Iowa State

4 of the 5 away from home. all are ranked or have been ranked at some point this season.

Seems to me that the simplest explanation for the OL’s struggles early on is that they were learning and adapting to a brand new scheme. It’s one thing to do it in practice, it’s another to do it in a game environment, especially an extremely hostile one like Fayetteville in just the second game. This group may not be history-making in terms of Texas lines, but I see them coming together and improving throughout the season as they internalize the nuances and intricacies of what Flood is asking them to do and they develop more unit cohesiveness around his schemes.

That’s a little bit of my point with question. Had the Oline of come out firing all the development would have been behind closed doors. To me anyway, this would mean that Flood’s hand in the matter would be a bit vague. As it stands, we can see the development from game to game and that might make it easier to sell to recruits.

I’m sure others have said or thought this but the real key to Sark’s success this year is in getting to a point that play is consistently good. With how much they have improved with each game, the Horns hold their future in their own hands. Not a lot to see in Big 12 to make one feel otherwise.

You think if the OL had come out playing well for the start, he wouldn't be able to receive credit?

Certainly would be able to receive some but it would make it harder to isolate how much development played. At the beginning of the year I really don’t know how much of that is raw talent, previous coaching staff or current coaching staff. The first game baselines max role raw talent or previous coaching development could play meaning any progress throughout the year is 100% Flood.

Fair enough. I’ll take your opinion on the matter over mine. I wouldn’t be able to tell how much was Flood in isolation but if you’re telling me that people who know more about football than me (I.e. everyone) can tease that out without a baseline, it makes sense.

I think we saw this group in the spring. Had he been able to get them into a plus-unit by game one, folks would have wanted to put a statue up. ;)

so did Arkansas and they had pressure all night. not saying Tech's line is as good as it appears Arkansas is so far but i'll take 3 good rushers over 4 bad any day.

perfect. let the kid get a big head. Riley has had an easy early tenure at ZerOU. Stoops was still winning at a high level and yes Riley as OC helped revamp their offense now he's HC and he's got more on his plate than just calling plays.
The Horns were down the road a couple of weeks and had changed QB. I am sure they were coached up after the Arky loss. I am just saying Patterson will scheme to take care of perceived weaknesses and Jones and Okafor are leading candidates from earlier in the season. However, they held up pretty well in pass pro against TT, but it looked too easy. Thompson had all day a lot of the time based on Tech approach. I do not expect that this week but would like to be surprised.

Quite honestly, the only people with that "question" on Monday after Arky debacle were those with their heels dug in on Card. Objective folks knew Thompson was getting the nod against Rice.

did you really know he'd play like he has so far? be honest ...

I'm not sure that's a fair portrayal.

in what way? that Riley won't hit some sort of rough patch at some point or the Stoops era doesn't apply now?

I've gone through it time and time again.

The profile needs to be players from the state of Texas that go out of state and achieve success elsewhere.

Justice Oluwaseun was a multi-year starter at UNLV at multiple positions, he is from Texas and was in the portal. He's now the starting right tackle at Miami and played well vs.Bama.

exactly. to borrow a phrase from the late great Howard Schnellenberger ..

"We need to build a wall around Texas"

whatever we do, let's not make too much out of performances against two of the worst groups this team will face all season.

TCU is a classic trap game. we're coming off a huge beatdown of Tech, with TCU getting thumped by that private school in Highland Park .. they are like us after Arkansas .. their pride is on the line. if we walk into Ft. Worth with a big head we might leave without it.

I think we need to be careful about how we present potential September fool's gold.

I'm not writing Rattler off.

Rattler will be fine if he takes Riley's coaching. agree completely don't write him off.

I think you go out of your way to nitpick any comparison that isn't a perfect side by side comparison and it's not really needed.

Now, go watch Casablanca.

can't decide which is the great Humphrey Bogart's best film .. "Casablanca", "The Maltese Falcon" or "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre"

sleeper choice .. "Philip Marlowe" Bogey invented the tough guy who tells the hot chicks how it really is. George Clooney goes to bed at night and dreams he's Bogey.
