Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (Let me be crystal clear...)

I'm one of the very few on this board that cares about the money factor. It is very real. By giving Strong another year, we will save no less than $13-15MM. That is real money that doesn't just grow on trees.

Except the reality is that donors who can throw it away like change would be paying it, not the school.

It is my reporting that tells me that all things being equal, the Texas administration would rather not have to eat more than $13 million after the season in replacing Strong and potentially all of his assistants if it doesn’t have to. The remaining portion of his contract, which I believe was poorly constructed, is so large that the idea of replacing Strong is almost a non-starter for some high-level administration members.
Texas is literally everything that it is rumored and thought to be...polical...liberal...but most of all, all about the money. The next time that this University places an emphasis on winning will be the first time. It's truly unbelievable when you consider it's the most profitable athletic department in the country yet continues to fail to get top notch facilities, hire a competent AD and stays in the most undesirable P5 conference in the country.

Ketch,

I agree with everything you said. But, let me ask you this. If some way Texas was to get to 8-4 and win a bowl game (I know it's far fetched). Would that change your narrative at all? I'm curious.

I really think you're underestimating your SJW buddies here. It would very much be turned into a race issue, hell it already has by several of the typical national media members that you typically promote on here.

Who cares. We need to do what's best for us. Not placate certain media members. It would be an non-issue a day or two after the firing

Sounds like the powers that be aren't interested in winning let alone championships. Mack was let go at 8-4 so we could do better. Now it feels mediocrity has become an acceptable level of performance. There's a lot of talent on this team that might not ever be coached to its potential.

13 million plus new coaches? That 20 million for the next year. That's a lot of money to dump a coach. I hope they do it anyway, but you can't rail on them for being fiscally conservative to a point.

Depressing as f*ck. We are a rudderless ship . Recruiting is now just a whimper (thanks Strong) . ..its going to be a long damn 8 plus months. I'm just glad we have smart coaches in hoops and baseball . Maybe their intelligence and impending success can rub off on him.

I get that, but it's still real money, and could be going elsewhere. That's a pretty big hat they would need to pass around.

Gilbert still learning is better than we've had at OC the last few years. At least we have the right scheme, now it's just getting it all installed. Gilbert learning on the job is a huge improvement and still the biggest reason Charlie has even a chance of being retained.
agreed

I'm not the biggest Strong fan in the world but you guys look bipolar going from dream big to worst coach ever in less than a month.
The dream big part largely centered on how cream-puffy the league looked in September.

Texas wasn't as good as they looked after two weeks.

Texas brought in $92 million in profit last year, not revenues. That's coming off a 5-7 season...to say that the $20 million in the scheme of things would be a drop in the bucket is an understatement. Texas doesn't want to pay the $20 million because it doesn't want egg on the face for a horrendous contract and doesn't want to upset admin folks for throwing away that type of money on athletics and the negative press that would come along with it. This is what happens when you have an academic in charge of your athletic department instead of a qualified AD. Basically, a total shit show from the top down at Texas right now.

Hope you are right about Pulisic. Not that I need another reason to watch Liverpool right now. Their game is very easy on the eyes.

Alabama found a way to survive that whole Saban's a liar thing that came with his arrival.
You honestly could not have picked a more apples to oranges comparison here. Several are already on the record that letting him go would be racially motivated and that's when the team had a losing record. You are vastly underrating the race climate that we live in right now in 2016.

who is on record saying it would be racially motivated?

Ashley Cole made a PK when Chelsea beat Bayern to win the Champions League a few years ago.

United may be the best team Chelsea has beat in their run, but you can't argue with a 16-0 goal difference during that span. Conte is the man & has them rolling.

Also, Charlie needs to go no matter how we finish. Otherwise, we will just be rehashing this argument with fewer coaches available.
