Less than 48 hours until a new season of incompetence dawns

I think Texas has to ride one more year with Shaka.... if they want to make a run at brining Chris Beard to UT. If they have someone else in mind then make the move.

That is what I was thinking at the beginning of the season with zero doubt, but as this season has progressed, I no longer believe that is Texas' best interest. Even with Shaka's national popularity among other coaches and broadcasters, they have been roasting him. Fraschilla talked about how Texas plays like it is a country club. The KSU announcer went on about how Texas is dead last in free throw attempts in a 300+ D1 field-that means not physical. We have our 6'11" guy launching 3s at will and so many ill advised shots by others-which means selfish play. 38 point loss to WVU and a 29pt loss to a shty ISU team. I don't know, man. If the teams fought hard and played physical, then I could excuse him by saying he has a young team. That hasn't been the case, so the only possible "pro-Shaka" argument is a having to perform on a buyout.

Yes to all of that. Shaka has conclusively failed, and it's time to move on. Hanging on to a lame-duck coach for another year just because it might make it easier to land one other coach -- who we may well end up failing to land anyway -- is not a solid plan.

If we really want Beard, the difference between paying ~$13.1 million next year and ~$16.5 million this year is not that great. I'm doubtful that our BMDs would pony up the cash for men's basketball in either scenario, but if they're willing to cover the two buyouts next year, I doubt the added cost of doing it this year would be a dealbreaker. All assuming Beard would even want to leave Lubbock, of course.

I think if Chris Beard is your guy nothing else matters you do what you have to in order to get him. Reality is that can’t happen till after next season sometimes getting the right coach is about timing, and creating the right timing.

I’ll bring up another possibility. John Belien reality is he will be almost 70 years old. You could bring him in as a 3-5 year fix and then make a run at Beard if that’s who you’ve decided “the guy” is

Kelvin Sampson? He has a little stink on him, but he wins everywhere he goes and seems to have been humbled a bit.

And as long as we are throwing out names - Kim Mulkey. She would cut out that country club atmosphere. Quite frankly, she is the best in the country. The Austin Libs would love putting an independent woman in a "traditional" "man's job." I guaranty she won't go 11-32 in road conference games. You have Pop hiring a woman, the 49ers hiring a woman --- this team ain't going to the big dance under Shaka -- get ahead of the curve and generate pub/excitement/goodwill!

Yeah no doubt Sampson is a good coach. I don’t know that we’d go that route, but dude would win. If we were gonna hire a woman(which isn’t really a crazy idea my first call would be to Becky Hammon. Pop’s endorsement is good enough for me.

IF, and that's a big if, any men's CBB program would hire a woman as HC, I wonder what the interest level would be recruiting-wise for top high school basketball players?

What - you don't think the top recruits would warm to Grandma Mulkey carrying her grandbaby around on the court??

I don’t think top recruits would really care honestly. Most top recruits have one goal “get to the NBA”. And they don’t really care who helps them get there as long as they do.

Let’s take Becky Hammon as an example. I think she will coach in men’s pro or college ball fairly soon. She’s coached under pop, and coached Tim Duncan and Kahwi. You think college kids are going to be like “she ain’t coaching me?” Yeah probably not.

I’ll also point out that the strength and conditioning coach for Bill Self and now Shaka Smart is a woman and is widely considered to be the best in the business. And she probably spends more time with the players than the HC does honestly.

When it happens(and it will) I think it will be a bigger deal to fans and media than it ever will be to the players.

Shaka takes a lot of crap. Much of it deserved but credit where it’s due down 4 guys and Coleman not 100% beating a good WVU team is impressive.

People may not want to hear this but the odds of Shaka coming back next year increases tonight.

agreed, great win. but why does Shaka suck so bad when he has a full cast of players?

Not sure about coming back or not. What I want to scream about is it being apparent that he has enough good players to run havoc! Havoc is why he was hired. Another frustrating thing is two players playing pick and roll while the others stand around. Then there’s the shooting of the 3’s out of control. Rant over!

If they beat Tech on Saturday which will be a tall order down so many guys they’ll probably win out. No way he gets canned then. Takes another job? Maybe but he won’t get fired.

Tap the brakes. WVU is 1-7 in conference road games this year. If this win is a job saver, then this thread will have 25 pages by the end of 2021. Smart has inspired nothing but apathy.

Oh tell us please all knowing one!
It’s really simple. You don’t get to final 4’s especially at a mid major without being able to coach, so the idea that Shaka is just a clueless idiot has always been a silly argument.

Now why isn’t it working? Because imo Shaka got away from what made him successful at VCU and really what successful teams are doing.

When he got to Texas he started building the program around big guys like Bamba, Allen, Hayes etc. Although those guys are super talented it’s going to be hard to play an uptempo style with guys like that, and most of them aren’t really that great offensively as young 18-19 year old kids. Most of the time going up against 20-22 year old guys. With that Shaka should of stayed with what got him the job great guard play, uptempo tough teams. As tempting as the elite big guys are only having them one year these days they aren’t really going to help you win. Unless they are a once in a generation type like an Anthony Davis who came in to college as a man.

That would still make Shaka a bad coach, just in a different way.

With all due respect - you have described a “clueless idiot.” He got where he is with the “havoc” style then completely abandons it? That’s like Lincoln Reilly suddenly switching from no huddle to the wishbone. As for the Uber talented big men - can you imagine a full court press by 4 McDonald’s all Americans with a lean, 7 footer future top 10 pick as the anchor swatting away anyone who breaks the press? What we got instead was 4 guys standing and one guy dribbling out the shot clock before hoisting a low percentage shot. He’s had plenty of time - time to try something new.

Just to be clear, I don't recall anybody on this board calling him an idiot. Secondly, many on here have already brought up the fact that we hired havoc and got no havoc. The point about him abandoning havoc has been made and complained about the last couple of years. Smart could be retained for next season-that, I don't know. Texas can still hit the 20 game win mark and a very outside chance at the NCAA Tourney if they win the B12 Tourney. However, if he is let go or leaves, I trust that CDC will have done his homework and hire a quality coach to run the program.

If they beat Tech on Saturday he will be back. Reality is it would cost the school 10 million to fire him and they aren’t going to eat 10 million after a probable 20 win season and maybe a tournament birth. Unless they can get a sure thing as a replacement.

Also the fact that if football goes south this year they will be writing some big checks makes it a lot less likely they make a move on Shaka unless they have to. He could always leave for another job but I’d bet on him being back

Football ain't going south. We won an elite 8 game vs Georgia in the sugar and a sweet 16 game vs Utah. TH isn't going anywhere.

SS hasn't even won a tourney of 64 game in 5 years. Albeit, I said if he finishes top 4 in big 12 he stays. He's almost there.

come on man. Yes we finished the season strong, but if Football is 6-6 again Herman is out. I think he made some strong staff moves that will hopefully work out, but his seat his hot.

I didn’t accuse anyone in particular calling him an idiot. That was my word. They don’t have to win the big 12 tourney to get in to the NCAA. Go 3-1 at least rate rest of the way and win a game in the big 12 tourney they are probably in.

WTF, Texas was 8-5 with the win over Utah. 6-6 was the pos Chuck Strong era. We aren't going 6-6.

Ehlinger is going to make the playoff this year. Our 2 deep on defense was 85% freshman and sophomores.

Dude, TH is 100x's the coach SS is. There is no comparison. Shaka Smart teaches the players "mean face" so they know how to intimidate the other team. Watch a game, he does it during timeouts. Clearly, the best form of intimidation is winning.

Let’s hope so. Anything less than 9 wins probably isn’t going to fly. Let’s hope the momentum from the Alamo bowl carries over. Certainly didn’t from the sugar bowl.

Whose comparing Shaka to Tom Herman? I’m certainly not

Ya'll better hurry up and make the move before its too late!

For instance, her name comes up occasionally in rumors about going back home to coach the men’s team in Baton Rouge.

Gotta give KM her due. Like the article says she's won at every level. And it looks like she's going to win #4 in April.

It seems like she's a little bit misunderstood. She made an emotional comment defending Baylor athletes and she got taken over the coals for it. She seems like a throwback to another time concerning todays women's athletics. Apparently she couldn't deal with Brittany Griner's sexual orientation at least that's what Griner said in her autobiography. But all this was in an article the day before last year's Final 4 title game by a ND fan and they used her in contrast to the ND women's coach who apparently is as outspoken in women's athletics as Mulkey isn't at least according to them. Oh and all this was the day before the women's title game between Baylor and you guessed it ND.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this is vintage Golden Domer self righteous, insufferable, bulls**t. This is what they always do when they play for a title they're ND and they're always this and that and the other team isn't. Things that really don't matter when it comes to the game itself. Oh and guess what? They choked in the last 20 seconds. Missed free throws, turnovers, bad strategy, and substitutions. And because it was the Golden Domers I lmao.

My .02 worth
