At some point, recruiting fans and reporters will figure out that there really are no surprises with the new Texas football staff when it comes to recruiting.

Whether it’s Tom Herman and staff receiving interest – and commitments – from out-of-state prospects or flipping commitments from other programs, the entire Texas football staff has been on a huge recruiting roll over the last few months, and they’ve been able to pull more than a couple rabbits out of their hats.

On Tuesday night, Texas did it again.

Tight end Dominick Anderson, one of the hottest junior college prospects in the entire country, pulled off a shocker when he announced on Twitter that he had chosen the Longhorns over a final grouping that included Texas, Alabama, Louisville and Oregon.

Anderson, out of Arizona Western Community College, has kept everyone guessing on where he would land by avoiding the media over the last several months. He took official visits to his four favorites, including a June visit to Texas.

“I feel 100 percent correct with my decision and trust the coaching staff to prepare me and give me the best opportunity to succeed,” Anderson said in announcing his commitment on Twitter. “From family to good friends and also coaches, I want to thank everybody who has helped me in any kind of way and been in my corner since day one. (I’m) extremely hyped to say I’m committing to The University of Texas.”

A 6-6, 255-pounder who excels as a receiving threat from the position, Anderson told Orangebloods when he first landed on UT’s radar that the Texas coaches like his versatility, and he had developed a strong relationship with tight ends coach Corby Meekins.

“They like how versatile I am at the tight end position - my size, speed, catch radius,” Anderson said. “They want me to come in and be playmaker at the tight end position, make an immediate impact.”

Anderson was a basketball standout in high school before discovering his football talents and getting serious about his academics, which led him to the junior college route. He’ll enroll at Texas in December with three years left to play two seasons of Division I football, and he’ll walk into a tight end situation at Texas that will feature very little proven depth. Texas will lose senior Andrew Beck and graduate transfer Kendall Moore after this season, meaning the Longhorns will have only a couple tight ends on their roster, and those players will have a maximum of one year of experience under their belt.

A four-star prospect, Anderson becomes Texas’ 15th commitment in the 2018 class and UT’s first tight end commitment. The Longhorns signed two tight ends in the 2017 class – Reese Leitao and Cade Brewer.
