Every month, the fellas over at Mercury Exteriors have sponsored a content piece that will shine light on a University of Texas athlete that might not have received the mount of credit that they deserve for their contributions in their respective sport.

We're calling it the Unsung Hero of the Month.

The January Unsung Hero of the Month is Jordan Pope.

**********

The Unsung Hero:
With the first month of the new year at a close, we look back at which Longhorn had themselves an impressive January, and with the Football season coming to an end, we figured it would be a great time to give flowers to an athlete from a different sport.

Transferring can be a very difficult thing to do for many, not only is it an entire new scenario for some, but it can be overwhelming going from one conference to another, and this Unsung Hero has handled it well. Jordan Pope came in as a highly touted transfer from Oregon State, where he put up 17.6 PPG and 3.4 APG, making him a highly talked about name in this past portal window.

New Year, New Me:
Jordan was on a tear to kickoff 2025, in the first two weeks of SEC play (1/4 – 1/18), Pope poured in amazing numbers amongst contributors in the conference (at least 50%Min/G):

  • 21 Free Throws Made (T-3rd in SEC)
  • 15.4 PPG (10th in SEC)
  • 24.7 USG% (15th in SEC)
  • 9 Mid-range FGM (T-4th most in SEC)
  • 1.8 SPG
Despite not having the best start of the season, Pope showed exactly why he was such a name this offseason in the Transfer Portal, coming from a place where he was the number one option averaging 17.6 PPG, to transitioning to not only a new squad entirely but a new conference as well, numbers like the ones you see above are quite impressive for someone who is still finding their role.

Baptizing opponents:
Coming from the Big 12, many believed Texas would be entering a conference that was not on par with their last, boy were they wrong. Not only is the SEC arguably the toughest conference in College Basketball right now, but Texas lost its first three conference games…then it happened.

Jordan Pope displayed a masterclass in Norman pouring in a game-high 27 points, 3 threes, and 4 steals. Not only did this performance snap a 3-game losing streak for the Longhorns, but it was also the first SEC Conference win in Texas history, cementing his moment in Longhorn history.

In addition to a win over an arch rival amongst the forty acres, Pope was the first major conference player this season to score at least 40 points in a game with 0 turnovers in the game as well.

Blessing Austin in more ways than one:

Pope had himself a month to remember and if he can continue this level of play, then the Longhorns will surely be a team on everyone’s radar come march. Pope has been an underrated contributor to Texas’ success as of late, but dare I say the Junior Guard was already contributing to the Horns in the offseason…

Founded by proud UT graduates (Garner, B.S. Geology and Chris BBA and MBA from McCombs), Mercury Exteriors is dedicated to helping Texans improve their homes. Whether it is repairing damage caused by bad weather or upgrading the exterior of a home, Mercury is trusted by Longhorn fans across the state (disclaimer: we will also help Aggies, Red Raiders and Horned Frogs, as long as they behave themselves).
