ND line down to -3.5

Fellas Burt is the real deal. 6'3, 39 inch vertical jump, great top end speed. Decent route runner needs to work on being deceptive coming in and out of his breaks. My biggest complaints are his hands. This year with Johnson on the other side look for Burt to get more favorable match-ups.

One thing that should help even more is the run game. After watching the spring game again it seems like they run a ton of option with a true veer blocking scheme. If they can get that going its going to force safetys to support the run. That means outside guys are going to see more single coverage and I would love to see what our outside guys can do.

We don't know how good Burt will be, but saying he is elite is big stretch. He isn't even ranked in the college football WRs top 20 list put out by pro scouts. There are multiple underclassman on the list (Sophomore & below) so he isnt even elite in his own class.

Sidenote: what is with all the name calling? So someone makes a point you don't like or disagree with & you call them a fanboy, asshole, etc. ?
Everybody is cool guy on the message board. Got it. But it is a football game discussion, not a fight. No reason to make it personal.

I like Burt a lot as a prospect, by 2017 or 2018 I think he could develop in a Top10 level WR in CFB

But at this point, I haven't seen him show the kind of polish, aggressiveness, or confidence that would need to be pair with good size/athleticism to be a top level WR
Additionally, I haven't seen him show the quickness/speed to separate from good coverage or the hands to consistently make contested catches yet.....both of which are key to be a Top10 level WR

Guys that I consider "Top10 Level WRs" would not only have the strong physical traits of a prospect, but also show the polish and "single area excellence" to dominante

  • JuJu Smith - Great size, strength, athleticism, plus elite production and DOMINANT LEVEL physicality and hands
  • Calvin Ridley - Great size, strength, athleticism, plus strong production and DOMINANT LEVEL separation skills
  • Mike Williams - Great size, speed, athleticism, plus good production and DOMINANT LEVEL hands and jump ball skills
  • Christian Kirk - Great athleticism and hands, plus strong production and DOMINANT LEVEL quickness and separation skills
  • KD Cannon - Great athleticism and hands, plus strong production and DOMINANT LEVEL speed and separation ability
  • etc

Who said elite? We are just saying the kid can play and his production was limited because we didn't have a QB who could get him the ball. You played DB at a high level so you know how hard it is to single cover on the outside. Even harder if the guy is tall fast and runs good routes.

And if you don't like the tone here then why are you here. I don't understand why you guys come over here with your fan boy crap and completely blow off guys who know what they are talking about.

"Sophomore wide receiver John Burt was the Longhorns’ leading wideout in 2015.

Burt had an impressive freshman campaign despite Texas’ struggles to generate a passing game.
The 6-foot-2, 184-pound receiver from Tallahassee, Florida, caught 28 passes for 457 yards and two touchdowns last season.

Burt could have an opportunity to see more passes thrown his way under Gilbert and Mattox.

Burt totaled 106 receiving yards and a touchdown in the Longhorns’ spring game. He’ll be a big part of Texas’ offense in 2016."

Yep, he'll be an asset in 2016 and heck, our OC had Keyarris Garret last year.

Sorry not elite. I don't know why you even brought it up. I mean I saw his first ever college game vs ND last year and he wasn't that good.

Good thing he has break away speed. He pulled every corner he caught a deep ball on in 2015.

Yeah I know, Ran 13:98 in the 110 hurdles this year, finished 2nd in conference qualified for the NCAA's while focusing on Football. Kid looks good running routes and can flat out fly just trying to beat the ND guys to the punch.

Isn't it amazing how much better Texas has become since January? Haha. Happens every year. Just giving you a hard time fellas. It's good to have expectations

There is some exceptional young talent, extremely thin in a lot of positions, kicking game is not going to be good. Its a 7-5 or 8-4 team. I am just hoping we don't have any ND, TCU, ISU repeats next year.

An ou fan talking about lofty expectations in the offseason is laughable. $ooners think they're going to win it all every year. Every replacement they have is better than their predecessors and every player their opponents lost is irreplaceable.

Some thoughts on this game from the Texas perspective as I simply don't know enough about ND.

OFFENSE:
I love the running backs, warren and foreman are monsters

The wide receiver group is really starting to accumulate some talent Burt has the potential to be an elite guy as does Johnson. They are probably still a year away though.

I still think the oline is a concern and I'm curious if there is a drop off in production with the loss of wickline, terrible recruiter, unlivable guy but a very very good oline coach who really made something of the pieces he was left with. Vale and Williams are nice players who should be dominant guys as upperclassmen.

Buechelle looks like he's going to be a player but it won't be in his first game, that's a very tough task for any true freshman QB and honestly if the competition is close I'd start swoopes so that I wouldn't jeopardize the kids development or confidence.

DEFENSE:
Linebacker core has some really good young talent as does the defensive backfield. I don't like how often Bedford plays hill and Davis in off coverage, they aren't off coverage guys they need to be at the line in press coverage to maximize their talent.

I think your defensive line is going to struggle and will probably be worse than last season, ridgeway and Jackson really carried that group. You're going to need the true fish you signed come in and really be players from day 1. By the end of the season this may not be as big of a issue but in game one it's going to be problematic.

I went back and watched your spring game and there were some nice things to be excited about but I was concerned that neither of your first units really dominated the second units as it was mostly 1's vs 2's. It could mean that your second units are pretty good but it was something that I felt was a concern

They played good on good except for OL/DL in the Spring and had players out on defense.

It looked like mostly 1's vs 2's but i judged that mostly on the first team oline and the defensive personnel they were facing.
There were even walk on's versus 1's in the trenches. It was 2 wet quarters of a glorified practice and they didn't tip their hand whatsoever.

I understand that, but that was my point regarding my concerns that the ones weren't dominating on either side of the ball. It doesn't mean there isn't anything worth taking away from the spring game, most took away the buechelle should be starting and looks like a kid who can lead Texas into the future. I would agree with that take away. Again maybe it doesn't mean much, maybe you guys are deeper than expected, it's possible and that's would obviously be a really good thing if true.

The starting six box defenders only played a couple series. It was for the fans. The OL dominated enough for the Backs to achieve 2 TDs and 174 yards on 16 carries. It's hard for me to take much from a Spring game.

As for Shane, it simply opened some people's eyes.

As for ND and their run defense against a Texas Strength:

"Biggest question mark: The run defense was disappointing and must now replace the three best play-makers in the front seven."

Added a slot receiver today, enrolls for Summer II to prep fro 2016. No. 4 WR in the Nation. Spread'em out, exploit the weakness and pound the rock. The first game continues to become more intriguing.

Phil Steele ranked Texas as his most improved team.
He has them ranked 24th in his top 40 (were he thinks they will finish at the end of season based off SOS etc...).
He has them also ranked 24th in his Power Rankings (how good he thinks they actually are).

Yep, & if I were to bet money on anybody being correct it would be him.
Dude is crazy accurate.

At least you're consistent on what you believe and why you believe it. Steele is where I'm at with it...9 or 10 wins for Texas.

Steele has the early Vegas odds for some games after week 1 from the South Point Casino.
Here are the Texas' games Vegas listed:

Texas -2.5
Cal

Texas
Baylor -1

Texas
Texas Tech -5

Texas
Okla St -12

Texas
Oklahoma -11

Texas
KSU - Pick'em

Texas
TCU - Pick'em

I checked the odds today in Vegas & found a few interesting things:

1) The best ND odds are -4
The best Texas odds are +4.5

Which means all the spreads are within a half point of eachother.

2) The actual Vegas predicted score is ND 36.2 Texas 29.6

So money is bringing the lines down to 4-4.5 even though the predicted line is 6.6

Westgate Casino set the odds of Texas regular season wins at 7, with the under at -130 & the over at +110.
So basically they are predicting under 7 games as the favorite. So if you are confident in an 8 win season go bet on it while the getting is good.

I actually don't gamble, but seem to be in Vegas all the time? Lol.
My wife loves Vegas & my gym has fights there all the time so I end up just hanging out watching sports at the casino sports books.
But I have never wavered on a game or fight.
