When I think of Austin, Willie and Jerry Jeff Walker always come to mind. First saw both at a concert in a farmer's field somewhere near Huntsville back in the '70s. I know JJW is from New York, but, damn if he isn't an honorary Texan, he should be.
You should read the next sentence Oldhorn. It says you have lost your mind. Meaning Buck is NOT as good as Willie. I worded that wrong. Should have been better. We do need some football!!! Hadammit swVA...we cant have this argument if you cant keep it straight!!! It wasnt you that said Buck Owens was better than Willy....you said Willy was better than Buck Owens...BELL said Paycheck was better than Willy and Clob said Willie was better than Merle.I said Buck Owens was on juke boxes in Europe in the 60's and West tex liked Willy. Sholz was for Texan singers and then Bell.....uh...then bell...no wait...it was Joeag....no uh....I tell ya what. I will get back to you after I read all this again......WE NEED SOME FOOTBALL!
3 more better than Buck...Ernest Tubb, Mel Tillis, Johnny Bush and Webb Pierce...!You should read the next sentence Oldhorn. It says you have lost your mind. Meaning Buck is NOT as good as Willie. I worded that wrong. Should have been better. We do need some football!!! Ha
What about Earnest Tubb? He deserves honorable mention ( not a huge fan of ET, tbh)Can't believe this thread is still going strong. Lot of country music lovers, and I'm talking old country, on OB's.
Oldhorn2 mentioned Lefty Frizzell, who I have always thought was way underrated for music and writing. Hell of a talent born in Corsicana Tx.
If you listen to George Jone's songs, you can hear a lot of Lefty in the way George phrases many of his songs.
Big fan of ET,Mel Tillis ,Johnny Bush. How about Tony Booth, Curtis Potter(RIP), Jake Hooker, Dale Watson and Hank Thimpson. If you want to hear a great band listen to any Hank Thompson Western swing album. Bob Wills bands were big and great but Thompsons band took a backseat to no one in my opinion.3 more better than Buck...Ernest Tubb, Mel Tillis, Johnny Bush and Webb Pierce...!
Hook'em
Doesn't get much bigger or better than Waltz across Texas or walking the floor over you.Agree. Not to mention his Texas Troubadours and their instrumental compositions. Leon Rhodes and Buddy Charleton and their Rhodes Bud Boogie etc. ET had a great band. It's on YouTube as wellWhat about Earnest Tubb? He deserves honorable mention ( not a huge fan of ET, tbh)
Do you like "the voice" Vern Gosdin? I think he is a great singer..Doesn't get much bigger or better than Waltz across Texas or walking the floor over you.Agree. Absolutely. I probably shouldn't divulge this but gentleman by the name of Bobby Garrett is my uncle on my moms side. He's deceased now but was considered a very prominent steel guitar player and was voted into the steel guitar hall of fame. He played for Hank Thompson during Thompson's heyday and many others. That's where a lot of my background comes from and I had the opportunity to meet a lot of different folks thru him.Do you like "the voice" Vern Gosdin? I think he is a great singer..
Hell yes. The Texas groove. He was really country at heart with a twist on things. At the time of his death he was cutting the cd "The return of Wayne Douglas'" in my buddy's studio right there in Floresville, Texas. Cherry Ridge Studios. My buddy's name is Tommy Detamore and does a tremendous job playing steel guitar on the whole cd.Do you like "the voice" Vern Gosdin? I think he is a great singer..
Chiseled in Stone and This aint my first rodeo are 2 I listen to all the time although I can't remember a song that he doesn't do well.Hell yes. The Texas groove. When I think of Vern Gosdin, the song that instantaneously plays in my mind is "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (and loud loud music)".Chiseled in Stone and This aint my first rodeo are 2 I listen to all the time although I can't remember a song that he doesn't do well.
Thanks for reminding me!! Downloading it.When I think of Vern Gosdin, the song that instantaneously plays in my mind is "Dim Lights, Thick Smoke (and loud loud music)".

I know the one you mean. Great song. He has a unique voice....and way of singing. When he is on you don't wonder who it is...you know. I went and looked up Vern Gosdin and man I saw song after song that I was saying "I remember that one"!! That just about does it was fantastic. He does that song" If you're going to do me wrong do me right" I believe that's the name and he nails it
Willie > Buck.
Willie > Merle
Willie = Cash
Any dude that has smoked pot on the roof of the Whitehouse WITH members of the Secret Service mind you, is a God. The IRS couldn't even take down Willie.
I loved Merle. LOVED him. I was heart broken when I heard. But let me assure you, when Willie goes, flags will be at half mast.
Somebody cue up 7 Spanish angels.
If you've never listened to Daryl Singletary you should check him out. Great voice that has recoded a lot of these older hits in more recent years. He does that Dim lights, thick smoke song. Of course he's too country to get any air play though.I know the one you mean. Great song. He has a unique voice....and way of singing. When he is on you don't wonder who it is...you know. Didn't George Jones' song "He stopped loving her today" win song of the year 2 years in a row? I thought it did but not sure.Country music from that era, I'd take Johnny Cash over Buck, Merle, and even Willie. In the big picture, none hold a candle to King George.

I can only assume you are talking about George Straight.......however, I agree with Son
Here in El Paso he has a park and school named after him. Even the UTEP fight song has an element of his popular song's "El Paso" melody "I fell in love with a Mexican girl".I didn't go back and re-read this thread but I don't remember anybody mentioning Marty Robbins.
He was a big country star that lasted a long time.
I looked him up on the wikipedia because he was always one of my favorites. 17 #1 singles. 82 top 40 singles.
Not really gutbucket country but country nonetheless. That cat could sing.
Since this thread had such a good run I thought I would post a friendly PSA.
AXS TV has a Merle Haggard concert from Billy Bobs on tonight at 9:00 pm. It's been on before, and will probably be run some more in the future. Not sure what year it was recorded, but it's a good show, and has interviews with Merle and his group between songs.
A good program for country fans that go back to those days.
