Official Spring Football notes thread

@clob94 H you posted your top secret notes yet? Or is this just the free cliff notes version? hahaha
Honestly I have not had a chance to go this year. I have spoken to a few team mates of mine that have gone to a few practices and the consensus is that we are just decimated on defense right now. In the past I've come on the board in the spring to deliver mostly bad news, and nobody likes being that guy year in and year out. I'm going to watch the spring game like you guys and wait o go up there when two a days start.

From what I've heard we luckily have an offense that can keep us alive in a shootout while we try to figure out our defense.

Clob, appreciate your realistic take on the team. Some people are just negative no matter what. Would love to hear your thoughts whenever you did get to see the team. Hopefully the product will be different (and healthier) come fall two a days.

We are more than adequate on offense. Even though we have a few kids with some nicks and nagging injuries --- we are good.

That D though?

Maybe one of these years we can hit it right to where both sides are good at the same time.

If we can’t stop us, I certainly don’t see anyone in the B12 doing it. We’ll see about LSU.

blOwU will be improved on defense, but Texas should still go 30+ on them. LSU will be a tough match up but I also think we will go over 25 on them.

We are going to be up to playing both of them so expect us to be ready. My biggest concern is can we show up for all the games we should win with no problem. Texas has a huge talent advantage over everyone in the Big 12 but we all know that Tom Herman has a history of dropping games he shouldn't.

I don’t know what sport you have been watching but Texas certainly doesn’t have “a huge talent advantage over everyone in the Big 12”

We have great talent in secondary and receivers. We have lacked where it counts on the OL and DL.

We had two solid WR guys last season and have potential this season, but there wasn’t a single Texas wide receiver on the first or second all Big 12 teams last season so I’d hold off on “great”.

With the departures/graduations and injuries are Shark and Roach the only really experienced players on the Spring ball defense?

If Sterns and Foster were cleaning up the backend would that be a difference?

That's a pretty accurate assessment of experience for the spring game. Having Sterns, Foster and Brandon Jones in the back will certainly help.

Wilbon at DT has a decent amount of experience and Taquon Graham and Coburn got some good reps in the bowl game. Having a big bowl game like that is so meaningful when you are bringing up young guys for the next season.

The buzz is that Wilbon has some skill sets but that he's got to learn how to get in touch with his inner nasty streak. He doesn't seem to have a dark side. If you're going to play the 3 you've got to be able to get across that guards face and draw the double team from the center and get a push. Nose and the 3 have to be able to get push and twist or stunt at will.

You guys remember when Casey Hampton and Shaun Rogers used to run those twists? Nobody and I mean nobody could block those two dudes when they were clicking.
Ya, we're no where near that good. But to have them dudes back would save our bacon right now.

A little unfair to trot out the all-time Texas DT duo out for comparison. Has there been any DT duo in the same ballpark in the last ~20 years?

Our Dline Depth isn't bad at all.

Wilbon is experienced as is Ta'Quon Graham. If those 3 are our starters we will be fine, however backing them up are some talented guys. Herman made mention of how Coburn is pushing Wilbon, now he isn't experienced but he is talented. Tom also mentioned he has been moving Ojomo around and he is proving to be extremely versatile. Then you also have Bimage and Carson who are talented guys and will get time. BTW both have really bulked up. That is 7 guys manning the three spots without mentioning new guys or freshmen. Like I said, I am not worried about the dline.

Linebacker depth is an issue. However, it is a issue that can be masked. Our base 3-4 is not actually a base defense at all, it's more of a suggestion. Texas true base defense is 3-3-5 and much of the time it's 3-2-6. Like I have been saying, our starting linebackers are good and experienced. You have Shark who looked great in the spring game and you have Ossai who played like a monster in the Sugar Bowl. And you have Ayodale Adeoye who should step up, but he is still a bit of an unknown. As I said, depth at this point starts to look scary.

We do have an Ace in the hole. Eventually DeMarvion Overshown is going to outgrow the safety position and he is going to be a monster at linebacker. He can do it all, He can cover out of the backfield and he has the hitting ability of a Mack Truck. I actually expect to see him moved to linebacker by the 5th game of the year.

I look forward to the day when we don't have depth/experience problems. I think things get a lot better next season in that regard considering most of the guys mentioned will still be around.

Your looking forward to the day that will never come. Our recruiting is so good that you are going to see year after year of our guys leaving early for the NFL. Don't be surprised when every year we have to take 25 guys because we lose so many to transfers and declaring early for the draft. Basically look at what happens on a regular basis with Alabama.

I'll take what Alabama has any day. I think if you are bringing in solid recruiting classes year after year, it's easy to stack up a lot of talented guys. For the most part Bama is starting guys that have been in the system at least 2-3 years, most freshmen get redshirts. Sure, guys leave early, but that's after being the program 3-4 years. We aren't there yet but getting much closer. We are at least out of the relying on Freshmen to start stage.
