It wasnt a redshirt for him. He wasnt allowed to travel with the team, attend games on the sidelines, practice, workout with the team, or with coaches. You miss out on a lot of physical and mental development when you cant participate in football activities. He was going to get a lot of playing time, so to dismiss Stoops' punishment of him by suggesting it was nothing more than the same kind of RS most freshmen get is disingenuous. If you want to say you believe he wasnt hammered enough, okay. Fair enough. But if i didnt know any better it almost seems through some posters comments like he got 0 punishment at all. At any rate, there's a pretty good chance this video wont get released to the public until after he's gone from OU. And if it just happened to get leaked tomorrow, I dont frankly see how one can justify punishing him twice for the same thing. Should have been gone in the first place, now its too late, if it gets out OU is stuck with the decision, but IMO Mixon isnt going anywhere.

Perhaps if OU fans are as outraged as they sat they are perhaps they should e-mail the President of OU and insist that he remove JM from school. Likewise they could e-mail coach Stoops and suggest that JM be removed from the team.

Thing is, they aren't outraged.

They defended him when it happened. In fact they blamed the girl and bashed her past. (this is a common MO for them)

They applauded his 'punishment'. Even when he stepped sideways and the AD had to get involved during his year off for him NOT following the set rules about hanging with the team.

They've cheered him on the field.

And they are now acting like "he did his time" and still defending his "punishment" and then distancing theirselves acting like "none of us know how bad it really was". And when this whack act gets pointed out, they bust out with "well geez guys, I agree he shoulda got worse....well maybe, but I don't know" and then act like they don't condone it. Jsto most Oklahoma fans if not all would have been perfectly fine with mixon being booted from the team. I'll ask again, what exactly do you want Oklahoma fans to do? Everyone makes good points in this thread. Stoops should also be commended for giving this kid a second chance in my opinion. I couldn't have done it but in the end he did what he thought was best and it appears to have a positive outcome.

No he does not. He should have kicked him off the team period. He gave in to the whatever it takes to win. Mixon was an embarrassment to the school for what he did they sold have cut their losses let him go somewhere else. Instead they made it even worse. And as I said in another reply on this thread they didn't even need him.

An RS alone would not be punishment ,I agree. But that isnt what happened with him. He was off the team, they called it a redshirt, but only because he'd otherwise lose a year of eligibility. You cant ever convince me being suspended from the team for a year is the same as a redshirt year. It's absolutely not the same. If that girl was my mom or daughter I'd feel the same way and i'd be wondering why she was drunk (again) starting fights with people at 2 in the morning. I'd also be mad at mixon and i'd want him to be charged with a crime.

And whether or not he'd have played as a true frosh. The RS year served him well (like it does all athletes). And he played even more as a RS frosh. One could argue it was best for his NFL prospects and even long term career. So how is that punishment?



I mean seriously, you are taking something that some kids ask for, some kids get forced on them by coaches, and some kids need. And acting like it was just punishment. That is BS.

They might have even RS'd him had he not punched a girl in the face. The fact that you guys put Stoops on a pedestal so much that you buy this is asinine. You bought this BS with Broyles. And still NO OTHER SCHOOL is arrogant enough and no other fan base ignorant enough to buy this. NO ONE uses RS as punishment. Because ITS NOT.

Go look in the rule book. It is a tool that schools/players have the ability to exercise in order to help a student athlete along in his physical/mental transition from HS to NCAA. It is not exhibit A in the handbook of punishment that says fights = 1 yr RS and selling dope =2 yrs RS and rape = 3 yrs RS.

He is allowed to have friends that play on the football team, he just wasnt permitted to participate in football activities, which is something that redshirt freshmen get to enjoy. Again, he was not a redshirt fresman, he was not a member of the football program in 2014. He never practiced or wore pads, or worked out with the team until 2015.

Traveling to games is just one aspect of being a redshirt- they also get to actually practice, and work out with the team and get facetime with coaches, study the play book, and have access to proper nutrition and athletic dorms, and football workout facilities. Not having those things does hurt progress and growth, how could it not? It's a year away from football. Its punishment because he was the crown jewel of the recruiting class, he was going to play. It may have been a blessing in disguise because it probably would have meant a Perine redshirt. However there is no way they were going to RS a kid with that kind of superstar potential. Even the university of tx plays 5 star freshmen (jefferson). And of course you guys know as well as anyone sometimes you need freshmen to play. So dont act like he wouldnt have played, or that Stoops doesnt have a track record of playing freshmen.

I dont know why you think I put Stoops on a pedestal, You act like i worship everything he does, i dont care about him particularly, Yes I think he's a great coach, and I'm an OU guy and Stoops is the coach. I like Boren too! I dont think everything he says or does is correct or right. My opinion on this incident has nothing at all to do with Stoops, in any way at all.
