Poll: Chicken and Dumplings

I grew up on the balls of dough. My grandmother and mother both made them this way. I married my wife and she rolls them out into strips. Relatively thick. More like squares, I guess. This was a complete game changer for me. I always kind of liked chicken and dumplings because I thought the dumplings were to doughy - but the squares! WOW! Definitely a fave.

This cold weather was perfect for a pot of chicken and dumplings. We use my wife's grandmother's recipe which was handed down for a century or more. Funny thing is, when Big Momma made them, they were big gooey dough balls, but when her daughter (wife's aunt) made them, they were rolled out thin and cut into strips - which to me was just chicken noodle soup. How do you like them?

thin and cut out aren’t dumplings....that’s spaghetti. ;)

I like my dumplings like I like my women. Big and doughy.

I would have liked to have seen that. She was one tough old gal. She once held a shotgun on an oilfield crew and made them fix her fence they knocked down because her cows were getting out.
Did she use a spittoon or just spit on the floor?

I last ate dumplings when I was 9 years old. Hasn't been long enough for me to try them again. I don't know how you guys choke them down.

I like the rolled out chewy dumplings. Don't know anything about dumpling strips though.

Fluffy balls are something but they're not dumplings. Dumplings are supposed to be made out of dough. I like the dense chewy dough-like dumplings my German grandmother always made.

I always figured she would know if anyone did. She ran a cafe for over 40 years and all the recipes were hers. She would get up at 4:00 am every morning at start by making the homemade pies. Man, everything she cooked was good.

It's interesting how life experiences influence how we perceive things. I grew up in rural East Texas. Serve me chicken & dumplings and it's an immediate flashback to poverty and a desire to escape. Same goes with Salisbury steak, beanie weenies, and chicken smothered in cream of mushroom soup. Amazingly, I can still enjoy red beans & rice, fied catfish and frito chilli pie.

Interesting. Most of those dishes were staples at diners where I was growing up and those diners were always seen as the go to places to eat because of the food, the quality and the conversation. Different strokes for different folks...

However the hell Cracker Barrel makes them. Son of a bitch, those things are addictive.

That's why I said it was interesting. I don't associate chicken & dumplings with good memories, for whatever odd reason. But, I do when it comes to cornbread, rolls, biscuits, and other country staples.

That's pretty sad. Usually I associate certain foods to good memories with family, friends etc. Regardless of the status in live.

I'm not sure why that's sad. It doesn't bother me. Plus, I have an extensive list of food with bad associated memories: Taco Bell, tequila, et al. ;)
