Recruiting Thread 2017

OU commit Robert Barnes interested in Texas?
Robert Barnes didn’t take very long to make his decision. The four-star Southlake Carroll safety followed in his father’s footsteps and made a verbal commitment to Oklahoma in September over offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Texas and others. “The class speaks for itself,” Barnes said. “We have the chance to have the No. 1 class in the nation. It’s a powerful class. I already feel like part of the family. I know when we get up there, we’re going to ball.”

But that doesn’t mean Barnes has completely shut the door on other schools. Texas is still high on Barnes’ mind. In fact, UT has always been around the top of Barnes’ list thanks to his family connection to the university — his uncle, Winfred Tubbs, played for the Longhorns in the 90s — and his respect for the program's tradition. “They’re still up there thanks to the tradition and all of that,” Barnes said. “It’s a great school. They’ve had a DBU tradition. The 2016 class was crazy. I think that they have a bright future. I’m looking forward to seeing what they do this season.”

The Texas coaching staff hasn’t given up on recruiting Barnes either. Head coach Charlie Strong and company recently flooded Barnes’ inbox and let him know that he is still a top priority. “Coach Strong and the whole staff hit me up last week,” Barnes said. “Literally, every coach at Texas hit me up. They sent me messages with ‘what’s up Rob.’ Coach Strong was the last one and asked me: ‘who hit you up the most today?’ It was funny.” His former teammate and good friend Lil’Jordan Humphrey, who signed with the Longhorns in February, is also courting Barnes to Texas. “LJ has been trying to get me,” Barnes said. “I obviously think LJ is going to be good for them. He just tells me that it’s better than OU and how they beat them last year. Just the normal stuff.”

Barnes plans to make an unofficial visit to Texas this spring and also hopes to make stops at Baylor, Notre Dame and Ohio State. At 6-foot-3, 194 pounds, Barnes is ranked as the No. 19 safety in the country and No. 36 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Per TFB:
Grayson Reed: Wanted to add a follow up note on yesterday’s note about Cy-Creek (TX) OL Grayson Reed yesterday. Reed recently visited Texas A&M and I caught up with Reed last night to see how the visit went. He told me he had a great time and even noted that Texas A&M may have taken a slight lead over Texas after the visit. However, he named Texas his leader right after a visit to Austin so I suspect part of it is just the post visit high. But it does appear this will be a battle between Texas and Texas A&M.

He plans to visit Oklahoma on Saturday and plans to visit Texas for a practice later this spring. He told me he plans to announce a top list this. Texas has a bit of a fight on their hands but with his ties to Texas, I like their chances – (Andrew)

Here are Wednesday's notes on Texas targets (Horns247):

— With Earnest Brown off the board, who are Texas’ other options at strong-side defensive end? Well, the Longhorns already have one commit in Lagaryonn Carson, but he could easily transition to defensive tackle. The only other prospect Texas has offered at the position is Madison Prep's (La.) Bryan Jones. However, UT is trailing behind teams like LSU (no offer) and Ole Miss. A name to keep an eye on this spring is Lancaster’s Noah Jones, who should see a number of major offers roll in during the evaluation period.

— As mentioned on the board, Cy Creek offensive lineman Grayson Reed named Texas in his Top 12 today. This comes as no surprise considering Reed said UT was his leader last month. The Longhorns are in great position here, but Oklahoma and Texas A&M are big threats.

— Port Arthur Memorial cornerback Kary Vincent notched a new offer from Penn State. Vincent has TCU out in front early on, but he’s high on Texas and plans to make a visit soon.

— University Lab (La.) offensive tackle Adrian Ealy picked up a new offer from Arizona today. Ealy holds a Texas offer, but pulling him away from LSU will prove to be a difficult task.

— Baylor is the latest school to extend an offer to Lake Dallas cornerback Kobe Boyce. Texas hosted Boyce for junior day last month and could be close to extending a scholarship.

Quotes from WR Omar Manning of Lancaster (24/7):

“I liked Texas from the get-go,” Manning said. “I was a little disappointed they weren’t looking at me but once the new staff settled in, they got right on me. I feel a lot of love from Texas.”

“I’ve been talking to Coach Williams a lot,” Manning said. “We haven’t talked a lot about the offense, but he likes my film and the way I play. He said I would be a great fit for what they’re trying to do.”

“I’m interested to see what the new system is going to look like this season,” he said. “I want to see if they can get it turned around on offense.”

Beginning to think we will land a top 10 class.

Initially thought a 10-15 class...realizing it's early but very highly rated players are trending our way.

My mail concern was a 6-6 record_no more. Think our youngsters will gel on both sides of the ball. Concerned we didn't have a viable TE.. reports are we have two that are showing promise. imo, our offense needs two TE vs. one TE and a fullback.

I think top 10 easily with a strong showing 8+ wins. Another poor year, and I don't think top 10 is doable maybe not even top 15. Another poor year and the Strong's coaching status for 2017 will be up in the air.

Winning/losing record will certainly help build/break this class.

When you listen to the kids, especially the top ones in the class like Carson and Ehlinger, they have stated they think it will be a special class and more than just barely in the top10.

Win some games and lets go get Browning and some other studs.

FWIW, Higdon says that this will "easily" be Strong's highest-rated class (assuming, obviously, that things don't go terribly wrong on the field).

Browning will be this year's Malik of this class. Hands down the best player recruited. Pull him in and watch the others jump aboard. Might come to a point where we have to turn kids away

BR odds on landing Marvin Wilson:
aggy 10/1
......
......
......
UT 4/1
LSU 3/1

I'd say that's pretty accurate right now. We win some ball games this fall and all bets are off tho! Watch out LSU

Here are Thursday's notes on Texas targets (Horns247).

— Arizona is the latest school to extend a scholarship to Bishop Dunne defensive tackle Damion Daniels. The three-star prospect likes Texas early and plans to make a visit soon.

— Four-star University Lab (La.) offensive tackle Adrian Ealy notched a new offer from Miami today. Ealy is considering Texas, but LSU is the overwhelming favorite in his recruitment.

— Lanier (Ga.) inside linebacker Tyler Taylor continues to see his stock rise. Taylor added a new offer from Purdue. The three-star prospect holds a number of major offers, including one from UT. It is unclear what his interest level is.

— Notre Dame put an offer on the table for Waxahachie wide receiver Jalen Reagor. As we mentioned yesterday, Texas has been in contact with Reagor this week and could offer soon.

— Cedar Hill running back Kaegun Williams is a prospect Texas could show more interest in down the line. The Dallas Opening Regional running back MVP earned a California offer today.

— Army became the first school to offer North Mesquite wide receiver Donte Howell. A deep sleeper, Howell visited Texas last year and was a teammate of 2015 signee Jean Delance.

Texas sent out junior day invitations to a number of talented athletes last month, including Houston Bellaire defensive end Alexander Duke. Unfortunately for Duke, he was not able to attend due to a family emergency. Still, Duke has interest in the Longhorns and would like to make a trip to Austin in the near future. “If I hear from Coach (Brick) Haley or Coach (Vance) Bedford again, then I likely visit," Duke said. Duke has caught the eye of several teams, but an injury has set his recruiting process back. Despite suffering a broken ankle, he has two offers and is currently committed to Houston. Duke is also hearing from a number of major programs like Texas. “(Haley) said the coaching staff always looks forward to seeing me,” Duke said. “I got invited to Under The Lights last summer and did well, so they were going to watch me during the season. During the season, I got illegally chop blocked, and that broke my ankle.”

Duke said he likes Texas overall and the direction the program is heading in under head coach Charlie Strong. “I think Coach Strong will make it a winning program," Duke said. "He just needs a couple of years to get his recruits in.” Duke will likely be under heavy watch from recruiters and scouts next month. He expects to rack up many offers after presenting his talents during the spring evaluation period. Many of the interested teams include Power Five schools, which feature the likes of Baylor, Texas A&M, Cal and Missouri.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder said he his commitment to the Cougars is solid, but he is keeping his options open. Duke plans to make visits throughout the year. “I’m solid," he said. "They (Houston) show me nothing but love. I guess they believe in me even though I broke my ankle.” A three-star prospect, Duke is ranked as the No. 41 weak-side defensive end nationally and the No. 109 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Lots of recruiting notes from top Texas targets at last weekend's RCS Dallas Event, so let's jump right in ...

Five-star DT Marvin Wilson was everything you'd expect, looking very good in drills and dominating just about every one of his one-on-one reps.

Wilson told me his plans for spring trips are somewhat up in the air, but a stop in Austin is possible.

"I’m going to try to (visit UT) but most likely I’m not going to be hitting any spring games this year. I’m just kind of chilling out," Wilson said. "I may go to a couple spring practices but that’s about it.

"I’m looking probably at like a Texas (visit), Texas A&M, Baylor, Ohio State, Bama … all my contenders. But nothing is set up yet."

Wilson is currently at 27 scholarship offers but he said he's really only considering about 18 of those offers. He's working towards cutting his list and plans to release a top-10 at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in June. During his senior season or immediately after, he'll cut it down to five.

What are the chances Texas makes the top 10?

“It’s a really big chance they’ll make it,” Wilson said.

Charlie Strong is very much involved in the recruitment of the nation's No. 1-ranked prospect and Houston Episcopal prospect. In fact, Wilson said he calls coach Strong directly a couple times per week.

“My relationship with coach Strong is really good. He’s a guy you can call any time," Wilson said. "He doesn’t want to be my coach, he wants to be my father figure.

“What I like with Texas, I’m a Texas guy. Everybody grows up watching Texas. Colt McCoy, Vince Young, everybody grows up watching Texas. So it’s just the background.”

There's a long way to go with this one, but Texas is in the fight and that's all you can really hope for at this point. (Suchomel)

******

If Marvin Wilson wasn't the most impressive prospect at the RCS Dallas event, it was his teammate, offensive tackle Walker Little.

Little earned offensive line MVP in a crowded field and dominated every single rep he took in one-on-ones.

Texas was Little's very first offer and there was a time early on when the Longhorns were looking pretty good. But things seemed to cool off late in the fall and Texas slipped down Little's grouping of favorites. The Longhorns are climbing their way back up the list.

"I’ve been trying to build a relationship with the new offensive coordinator and O-line coach, especially coach (Matt) Mattox. We’ve been talking a lot," Little said. "I’ll be making a visit out there in a couple weeks for the spring game. I definitely want to get a feel for the program they’re running there and where I’d fit in.

"He recruited me when he was at Tulsa. So I got to meet him pretty early on but I don’t have much of a relationship with him yet. He’s definitely a lot more laid back than coach Wickline was. I like him, I like his style of play that he teaches. I think we’d be a good fit together."

Little measured in at 6-7 and 305 pounds at RCS Dallas and said Texas is still very much under consideration.

"They’re pretty high on my list. Throughout the fall, they kind of went off because we just didn’t communicate much," Little said. "They were trying to figure out their new offensive line coach and stuff but they’re definitely right back up there."

Along with the UT spring game visit, Little has visits to Ole Miss and Stanford scheduled for this spring. He may make other trips but they have yet to be scheduled.

Who is genuinely under consideration?

“A lot of the SEC schools and Big 12 schools are up there, just because they’re close to home and I’m comfortable with them. But I don’t really have a list yet to put out there,” Little said.

The Rivals100 OL said he'll put out a formal list this summer of 5-10 favorites. Right now, he's watching about 15 schools. Expect Texas, Ole Miss and Stanford to all make the cut.

Of note, Little's brother and sister currently attend Ole Miss, so the Rebels have an ace up their sleeve, but Little says that factor is being overblown.

“I’m pretty comfortable there but they’re just the same as all the other schools,” Little said. (Suchomel)

******

Things can change in a hurry in recruiting and that's certainly been the case with wide receiver Tyrell Shavers. The Lewisville product checked in at 6-6 at a recent The Opening regional camp and clocked a 4.38 to go with his impressive size.

In the days following his performance at that camp, Shavers picked up offers from Texas A&M, Georgia, Miami and Alabama. This week, after the Texas coaches got a chance to meet with each other to discuss him, the Longhorns extended a scholarship offer as well.

"I like it a lot. It’s a little overwhelming but I’m enjoying it," Shavers said of the attention.

The 200-pound Shavers said "everyone is even" on his current list. He'll visit Texas A&M on April 9 for the Aggies' spring game, and as of this week, that's the only visit on his schedule.

Shavers' thoughts on Texas ...

“I like Texas. I actually have a teammate at Lewisville who is going there - Denzel Okafor," Shavers said. "Sometimes he talks to me about Texas, but I’m pretty open.” (Suchomel)

******

I was able to catch up with Baron Browning briefly in between reps at the RCS Dallas camp ...

Unfortunately, there's not a ton to report with Browning, the Rivals100 LB out of Kennedale. Browning took a recent visit to TCU and took in UT's Junior Day in late February.

"I’d say coach Strong and the academic advisors," Browning said when asked what stood out about the UT visit. "I just like the type of person coach Strong is, basically his overview of the program and how coaches are around the players."

The 6-4, 230-pound Browning, who took home LB MVP honors at the camp, said he doesn't have any visit plans in the works to get back down to Austin. Not at the moment anyway.

Browning, a one-time Baylor commit, maintained throughout the day at RCS Dallas that he does not have any schools standing out.

"I’m still open. I really don’t have any leaders or anything like that," Browning said. (Suchomel)

******

Offensive lineman Tyrese Robinson is a bit of an enigma.

Robinson is committed to Oklahoma and if you pay any attention to his Twitter feed at all, you'd think he is rock-solid with his pledge. Yet, when I check in with Robinson, he continues to tell me he plans to take some other visits (he was originally planning on attending Texas' Junior Day but that trip fell through).

In talking to Robinson last weekend, the Rivals100 member again said he'll take some trips, and UT is expected to get a visit.

"Right now it’s very solid. Right now I’m committed, but I’m still looking to take visits and check out some campuses," Robinson said.

Among the schools he wants to visit are Texas, Baylor, Georgia and Texas A&M. He said the Texas visit will probably happen sometime this summer.

“It’s the coaching staff," Robinson said of his interest in the Longhorns. "I really like Charlie Strong and have respect for him. And they recruit hard so I’m still going to check them out.”

Robinson checked in at 6-4 and 310 pounds at the camp and said he talks to most of the UT coaches, including OL coach Matt Mattox.

His thoughts on his commitment to OU: "Coach Bedenbaugh, he still wants me to take my visit but he knows I’m solid with OU. With OU, it’s the coaching staff, the new facilities and the academic support, and coach Bedenbaugh does a great job of putting linemen in the NFL."

From the sound of things, this one won't be finalized for a while. Oklahoma is obviously leading the pack, and I'd guess by a substantial margin, but the fact that he still plans to take visits gives schools like Texas a fighting chance. (Suchomel)

******

Lancaster wide receiver Omar Manning holds a Texas offer. The Rivals250 member was close to naming a top 10 last week but said he decided to hold off for a bit. That announcement could literally come at any day.

I asked Manning if there were any schools he knew would be in his top 10 and he said TCU, Alabama, OU, Texas A&M and Oregon would definitely make the cut. As for the rest?

“It’s really the same things I’m looking for in those other schools. I have to fit the system, I have to have a relationship with the coaches, make sure everything is right for me,” Manning said.

I then asked Manning for his thoughts on Texas and he said the Longhorns would also be in his top 10. So the good news is that UT will make the cut. The bad news, if we're reading between the lines, is that Texas wasn't one of the schools that was on the tip of his tongue when rattling off likely finalists.

“They’re going to be in my top 10, too. I have a lot of interest in them," Manning said. "They came on later but as soon as the new staff got there, they were right on me. There’s been a lot of love from them.”

Manning has taken a visit to TCU this spring and will be at Texas A&M on April 1. The 6-3, 200-pounder did call UT wide receivers coach Charlie Williams on Sunday night and told us this week that he and Williams had a very good visit. They talked about how Manning would fit in the UT system and coach Williams has told Manning previously that he really likes his game and how he works.

“Right off the bat, tradition. There’s a lot of tradition," Manning said when asked what stands out about Texas. "It’s a great program. I love what they’re doing out there turning it around.” (Suchomel)

******

La Grange RB J.K. Dobbins has committed to Ohio State, but this one certainly has the feel that the door is not slammed shut just yet.

Dobbins, a Rivals100 member, said it feels good to be committed, but he admitted that a lot of other schools are still pushing hard. Among the schools still recruiting him are Oklahoma, TCU and Texas.

Dobbins said the decision to commit to the Buckeyes and the timing of his announcement were just something he felt in his heart. He hadn't planned on making the decision, but was comfortable with Ohio State and simply felt it was the right time to make a commitment.

Dobbins will visit Ohio State in a couple weeks. That's the only one on his schedule, but he didn't rule out the possibility of other visits.

Could a Texas visit be in the works?

"I'm not sure yet. I have to look into it," Dobbins said.

Dobbins has been in contact with new UT running backs coach Anthony Johnson.

"He's just telling me he needs me, and he would love to have me," Dobbins said. "I like him."

I did mention to Dobbins that on our TicketCity OB podcast that I I predict he'll be at Texas for a visit or two. He just kind of smiled and said he didn't know, but he sure didn't shoot my forecast down.

I expect Dobbins will love what he sees during his Ohio State visit, but this one is a long way from over and the vibe I'm getting is that Texas still has a legitimate shot. (Suchomel)

******

Maybe I'm misreading things, but I just didn't feel the love for Texas from safety Grant Delpit.

The Houston Lamar product, who holds a UT offer, said he'll probably make his way up to Austin for a spring practice, but he doesn't have a date in mind yet. On the flipside, he does have three unofficial visits set up ... he'll be at LSU April 2 for practice, Florida April 8 and Southern Cal April 16

Thoughts on Texas ...

"Texas would probably be in my top schools, but I don’t know much about Texas. I have to visit Texas and see what’s up," Delpit said.

As for favorites?

“You know, I like LSU. I just got Florida. I like USC too. I like OU,” Delpit said.

The 6-1, 180-pounder said he has no timetable for a commitment and very well could make a decision at any point. A bit of a guess on my part, but I won't be surprised to see this one go down this spring and it sounds like the Longhorns could be on the outside looking in.

******

Cedar Hill wide receiver Camron Buckley said his UT junior day visit was "amazing" and he really likes what he knows of the new Texas offense and wide receivers coach Charlie Williams.

“He’s very intelligent on the game. He knows a lot and can teach a receiver a lot about the game," Buckley said. "He’s very experienced and just a good man.”

"(Williams' experience) carries a lot of weight. What receiver doesn’t want to be coached by someone who has been at that level, coached at that level? Someone who can tell you what you need to do if that’s where you’re trying to get to."

Buckley recently visited SMU. That trip, along with the UT junior day, are the only ones on his schedule, but he does want to take some more trips later in the spring if possible.

“I’m open to all schools who want to offer me. But the ones who have offered me now, I’m showing respect to," Buckley said. "I’m enjoying the process and the schools that are interested in me. I’m just thankful for it.”

And where does Texas fit in?

"Texas fits big because they were one of the earliest schools to offer me," Buckley said. "And it’s Texas, the tradition, it’s just fun to be around. Also it’s close to home so it’s easy to get to. They’re 2 /12 hours, 3 hours max. It’s just a blessing." (Suchomel)

******

Plano East RB Eno Benjamin has a top 10 that does not include Texas. He has four schools standing out– Iowa, Michigan, Baylor and Oklahoma State.

Bottom line ... if Texas offers, the Longhorns shoot up his list.

“Texas is a working relationship. I feel like if they were to offer, they’d be in my top 10. I’m working on that," Benjamin said. "It’s new coaches so it’s new relationships. We’ll see how it goes.” (Suchomel)

Per TFB:
Taquon Graham: Last night we tweeted out the following…

Graham will be visiting Texas a second time with his mother. As it stands now, TCU is the biggest threat to Texas but with this second visit locked in, Texas seems to be separating themselves. – (Super K)

Kobe Boyce: I caught with 2017 CB, Kobe Boyce (Lake Dallas, TX). Boyce let me know that there has been regular contact between him and Texas since his visit to Austin. You’ll recall Boyce visited for the junior day and was pulled aside by new db coach, Clay Jennings. Jennings let Boyce know that an offer is coming.

Kobe said that he’s hoping to make it to the Texas spring game. It feels like both OU and Texas are on the verge of offering Boyce and if that happens we could have a Red River battle for his services. – (Super K)

Lagaryonn Carson: Last night I spoke with current Texas DE commit, Lagaryonn Carson (Texarkana, TX). Carson let me know that he recently took visits to both Texas A&M and Baylor. Carson maintained that he is still committed to Texas and said, “I don’t have any plans on decommitting but I want to see other schools”.

Carson said that between his visit to Texas A&M and Baylor, Baylor stood out the most. “The coaches and environment are real laid back…between those two (Texas A&M and Baylor) I liked Baylor but I’m still solid on Texas”.

Carson said he does expect to take more visits which I know may be a cause for concern to some Texas fans but with a recruit committing so early, it’s not a surprise at all. Charlie Strong plays the long game and doesn’t seem to be worried at this point. – (Super K)

Robert Beal: 2017 DE, Robert Beal (Norcross, GA) has offers from just about every school a recruit could hope for in the country. Beal recently decommitted from Notre Dame.

Beal has already visited Texas on two occasions. I caught up with Beal briefly this week and he told me that he plans on making a return trip to Texas which will, “most likely be in the summer”.

With Lagaryonn Carson already committed and Taquon Graham continuing to trend Texas direction, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with Beal. – (Super K)

Chuck Filiaga: A 2017 offensive tackle to keep an eye on his, Chuck Filiaga (Murrieta, CA). Our Brandon Drumm chatted with the talented OT after his visit to Oklahoma yesterday and in the conversation Filiaga mentioned he will be moving from California to Texas. Filiaga said he will attend Aledo High School.

In that same conversation Filiaga said that he will be visiting Texas along with a number of other schools. – (Brandon & Super K)

UPDATE (Friday, 3:52 pm): It would appear Chuck Filiaga made the visit to Texas even sooner than we expected. He tweeted out the following:

UPDATE (Sat. 2:08 pm): I confirmed that Bullard (TX) Texas TE commit Major Tennison visited Texas today. This is obviously good news for Texas as Tennison has made his 2nd visit to Austin in the last month. Some have been worried about if Tennison will stick with Texas after receiving some big offers from Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, and others but this is a step in the right direction in keeping the talented East Texas TE committed. – (Andrew)

(Suchomel)

(Suchomel)

(Suchomel)

Grayson Reed: For a long time I’ve felt Reed was pretty close to a lock to Texas. After speaking to speaking a few people, Texas is defintely going to need to get Reed on campus soon to stem the tide a bit. We are told that the Aggies have made a big push recently (last week, Andrew in fact quoted Reed himself saying TAMU has a slight lead) but now I’m told Oklahoma made a big impression on Reed as well.

Grayson’s father has told me they will visit Texas in the next week or two and it sounds like that visit will be critical. – (Super K)

Kobe Boyce: Earlier this morning 2017 CB, Kobe Boyce (Lake Dallas, TX) tweeted out the following (per Brainiacs).

I spoke to Boyce last night and he had mentioned the possibility of making it to Austin this weekend however he was able to confirm the trip this morning. Boyce will be at Texas A&M on Friday night and make the trip to Austin Saturday morning.

Boyce tells me that he communicates with coach Vance Bedford multiple times per week. It isn’t clear whether an offer will happen this weekend as we are told Texas is evaluating multiple CB prospects but Texas clearly likes Boyce. This will be a return trip for Boyce as he visited back in February. Clearly Boyce likes Texas. – (Super K)

John Tyler wide receiver Damion Miller is committed to Texas but has made it clear that he wants to explore other options.

Miller informed Horns247 that he plans on making an unofficial visit to Texas A&M on April 1. Miller is tentatively scheduled to make a trip to Ole Miss on April 9 and said he is ‘more than likely’ going to make it to Oxford.

The four-star wide receiver will wrap up his spring visit schedule with an unofficial visit to Texas for the spring game on April 16. Miller was last on campus for junior day in late February.

When asked about his commitment status a few weeks ago, Miller had this to say:

I’m still committed. It’s a good fit for me. But I want to see what other schools are a good fit for me, too. I just want to visit and get a good feel for them.”

Miller originally committed to Texas last June over offers from Houston, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and others.

At 6-foot-1, 193 pounds, Miller is ranked as the No. 23 wide receiver in the country and No. 24 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

It’s shaping up to be a big weekend for Texas.

The Longhorns are slated to host five-star outside linebacker Dylan Moses, fast-rising cornerback Kobe Boyce and now four-star Temple defensive end Taquon Graham.

Horns247 has confirmed that Graham will make an unofficial visit to Texas on Saturday along with his mother.

Graham last visited Texas for junior day in late February and is one of the Longhorns’ top targets at the ‘Fox’ end position.

TCU and Texas are currently his two leaders.

At 6-foot-3, 251 pounds, Graham is ranked as the No. 9 weak-side defensive end in the country and No. 19 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL WITH (HD) ...

2017 4-STAR DE TAQUON GRAHAM (TEMPLE)
We had the pleasure of talking to TaQuon about his recruitment, which appears to be an in-state battle for the 4 star DE out of Temple.
Q: What camps are you looking to go to this summer? Is there a school who hasn’t offered yet that you would like to hear from more?
TQ: “No camps honestly, and not really. I’m just sitting back and evaluating them all.”
Q: What schools have stuck out to you the most through your recruiting process?
TQ: “Texas, TCU, Baylor.”
Q: Do you have any visits planned for this spring or summer, and when do you plan on trimming down your list?
TQ: “I will visit a couple schools out of state, and during the mid-summer I’ll cut down my list.”
Q: What about UT has stuck out to you as the reason they’re one of the schools on that list?
TQ: “They’re the school I grew up watching on Saturdays.”
Jason “Stone Cold” Higdon has mentioned TaQuon as a guy to keep an eye on moving forward, so we’re excited to hear more about him in the future.

IN THE FILM ROOM WITH ...
Each week we plan on evaluating a couple recruits we feel the community should pay extra attention to, and this week features 2017 4-star S Grant Delpit of Houston Lamar and 2017 4-star OT Grayson Reed of Cypress Creek

2017 4-STAR S GRANT DELPIT (HOUSTON LAMAR)

Delpit is definitely a prototypical Charlie Strong DB. Listed at 6’2, 175, Delpit is a Scout 300 player and Scout's No. 4 safety in the state of Texas. For comparison, Reggie Nelson was 6-feet, 175 pounds when Charlie Strong was recruiting him to play at Florida.

Nelson was eventually drafted in the first round by the Cincinnati Bengals. After looking at Delpit’s highlight film, it’s apparent from the very first play that this kid has a nose for the ball. His eyes are locked on the QB every play, and he looks incredibly natural at the safety position.

He definitely loves to deliver vicious hits. At the :37 mark of his Scout highlight video, Delpit delivers two huge blows.

But Delpit's desire for the big play definitely affects his tackling. At the :57 mark of his Scout highlight video, you can see how his aggression results in poor tackling form.

Delpit reminds us of Kenny Vaccaro, someone who is going to pick the ball off one play and get flagged for roughing the kicker the next. He seems to be all LSU/Miami at this point. But it wouldn't hurt our feelings if Strong and Co. made a push for this incredibly talented player.

2017 4-STAR OT GRAYSON REED (CYPRESS CREEK)

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound OT from Cy-Creek is an absolute road grader. When he gets his hands on you, it’s game over, and he loves to pile drive/throw/completely man-handle the opposing player.

He is constantly pulling, but he takes forever to get going. Furthermore, he has almost no pass-pro on his highlight film, which leads us to believe that his lack of agility hinders his drop kick. Personally, we see him inside at OG, where he can take full advantage of his immense upper-body strength.

Under the right coach, Grayson has the potential to be a star, and I (Zach) look forward to seeing him play in person this fall.

Definitely keep an eye on Grayson’s recruitment, as Higs has mentioned a pro-UT trend developing in his recruitment.

OrangeBloods

saying LB Christopher Allen of Baton Rouge, LA is looking into visiting UT for the spring game in mid-April. He holds a UT offer and is being recruited by our Louisiana connection Brick Haley.

James Lott's Film Room: Evaluating DT targets

DT Damion Daniels, Bishop Dunne (6-1, 315)

ANALYSIS: Daniels holds offers from Texas, LSU, Michigan, LSU and others. Once his technique and discipline catches up to his natural brawling strength and mentality, Daniels could grow into a good prospect at the next level. Flashes dominant qualities. Interior rock in the middle and almost impossible to block 1-on-1. Could be used as a nose tackle in odd fronts and a one-technique tackle by even fronts.

STRENGTHS: A load in the middle with brute power to engage blockers and toss them aside. Tough to block due to his blend of power and quickness. At his best when he keeps his pad level low and rolls his hips at the point of attack to carry his momentum into the pocket. Decent feet and mobility for such a large man.

AREA TO IMPROVE: Does not play with great technique and pad level. Very raw and unrefined. Does not play with great motor.

THE LATEST: Daniels was slated to make an unofficial visit to Texas earlier this month but cancelled. His interest level in the Longhorns is high, and he hopes to make it to campus before the end of spring. (Holland)

DT Deiontae Watts, Plano East (6-3, 302)

ANALYSIS: Watts currently holds offers from Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and others. Has potential to be a major force on the defensive line. Saw his stock rise dramatically at the beginning of 2016. Still needs to prove he's an elite level prospect. Didn't dominate as a junior.

STRENGTHS: Watts has a nice wide frame and is difficult to control him off the snap. Shows he can call on additional power to improve his position once he is engaged. Plays with good pad level and uses his hands well to redirect offensive linemen and shed blocks. Has great snap anticipation, shows a solid punch at initial contact and gets outstanding penetration moving the line of scrimmage in to the backfield.

AREA TO IMPROVE: Lateral movement, doesn't make a lot of plays outside the tackles box.

THE LATEST: Oklahoma is the clear leader for Watts, who made an unofficial visit to Norman a few days ago. Watts has moderate interest in Texas but isn't sure if he will make a visit to Austin this spring. (Holland)

DT Nelson Mbanasor, Pflugerville Hendrickson (6-3, 248)

ANALYSIS: Mbanasor was a first team all-district Selection for Hendrickson in 2015. Had 46 tackles and eight sacks last season. High motor kid that will chase the football from sideline to sideline. Very productive player on special teams. Good kid with great work ethic. FBS talent who has offers from Bowling Green, SMU, Houston, Colorado State and others.

STRENGTHS: Decent size, with solid frame to pack on muscle in the future. Versatile kid who can play all positions on the defensive line. Explosive first step quickness, can be fairly disruptive when he plays with good pad level. Aggressive kid who will make plays all over the field and will chase the football.

AREA TO IMPROVE: Spent the majority of his high school career playing inside. Needs to develop on the edge as a pass rusher if he moves to defensive end.

THE LATEST: Mbanasor made multiple visits to Texas in the fall but hasn't heard much from the Longhorns this calendar year. Expect the UT staff to further evaluate him this spring. (Holland)

Honestly....any recruit can look at our roster and see it loaded at WR with YOUNG guys. that might make it somewhat of a hard sell moving forward.

Depends how our passing game looks this year, how many guys are involved and if we have any attrition.

I wouldn't say it is loaded. Nor is it unbalanced with youth.

We have studs in SO Burt and FR Johnson. Next in line is Foreman who is a JR (will be a SR by the time these HS kids hit campus). Warrick has a lot of camp buzz again, well he is a SR. Bernand also with some buzz, is a JR and really playing Daje RB/WR role. Lorenzo Joe is a JR. DeAndre McNeal is a SO. Ryan Newsome is a SO. Dorian Leonard is JR. And you have nonfactor also upperclassmen who might shift to TEish role in Gray and Oliver. Add in true frosh in Davion Curtis and Reggie HemphillMaps and maybe LilJordan.

If I am an incoming frosh, I am only really worried about Burt and Johnson and being good enough to surpass McNeal/Newsome and the 2 incoming frosh Curtis/HMaps. Who fits where in this new offense and steps it up out of that group will be telling. But this offense has plenty of passes to go around to WRs. And as we sit we are really only looking at 2 entrenched starters.

Don't forget Kai Locksley. If he's moved to WR, he'll be a serious contender at that position. Provided he doesn't transfer because he wants to be QB.

If he makes the move and sticks, you have four true freshman studs in Johnson, Humphrey, Curtis, and Hemphill Mapps, plus Kai as a RS freshman who can be a beast. Then Burt and McNeal as sophomores.

If a big name recruit wants to come in and be a star, he might be looking at waiting a while. As of right now, I think Shavers is the only recruit that can realistically expect to step right in and compete for snaps with all those guys.

I like following recruiting, but 2017!is a little different for me. I'm not even paying attention right now. The reason for that is if 2017 doesn't go well a new coach is coming in and then who knows what the class looks like. The other reason is we know Charlie closes the deal late. So anything that happens in March/April doesn't really matter

Vance on recruiting, from BON:

Among major programs around the country, the Texas Longhorns are a bit of an anomaly in terms of early recruiting, as head coach Charlie Strong and his assistants prefer to wait to evaluate prospects for as long as possible until extending an offers.

On Wednesday, defensive coordinator Vance Bedford addressed some of the reasoning behind those beliefs.

"(Football recruiting has become) like basketball," Bedford said Wednesday. "You can make a lot of mistakes when you try to commit guys three guys two years out, because sometimes, they don't get any better. If you have to make a decision to let them go, we're at the University of Texas, if we offer a kid who's a sophomore, we can't pull out in this state, because we're the satellite school."

As a result, when Texas does extend early offers, the coaches don't push hard for commitments. Additionally, there are other reasons beyond being unwilling to deal with the ramifications of alienating Texas high school football coaches, but the need to have access to every high school in the state remains the most compelling.

"If I was from out of state, you come in, offer you, don't like you as a senior, pull the offer and don't have to go back to your school," Bedford said. "Here at the University of Texas, we can't do that. Because of that, we are slower to offer. We're going to have a slower process, to do a better job evaluating to get the right guys in here."

In the 2016 class, the strategy paid off, as the Longhorns were able to close with seven commitments on National Signing Day. Just as importantly, the staff was able to secure several late pledges from recruits who were evaluated late in the process, including defensive end Andrew Fitzgerald of Flower Mound Marcus, who was labeled as the potential "dark horse" of the class by Strong. Throw Baton Rouge (La.) Madison Prep linebacker Malcolm Roach into that group, too, along with Euless Trinity defensive tackle Chris Daniels, who didn't receive his offer until just before Christmas.

Elsewhere in the country, however, other schools were taking a different approach to the process. At Michigan, for example, head coach Jim Harbaugh pulled the scholarship of offensive tackle Erik Swenson, who had been committed to the Wolverines since late 2013. Harbaugh may not need to recruit that high school in suburban Chicago again, and may not be welcome there in any case.

But Strong and his staff can't afford to make decisions like that in Texas, as Bedford mentioned, especially since coaches in the state tend to band together and have been slow to warm up to the Longhorns head coach.

The lessons from the end of the Mack Brown era also stand as a stark reminder -- he was reticent to offer the top prospects early before Junior Days, took too many questionable prospects at Junior Days, and was unwilling to continue recruiting plays up to National Signing Day.

As a result, Texas missed out on talented players late and ended up with too many prospects who peaked too early. In the 2015 class, when Strong and his staff arrived, they had to go through the delicate process of parting ways with a handful of commits who weren't in their plans. Two of those players ended up at Louisiana Tech and Sam Houston State, illustrating just how far off those early evaluations were by Brown and his staff.

Bedford can't guarantee that the Longhorns will completely avoid those situations in the future, but the staff will do everything in its power to accomplish that feat.

"Are we going to make mistakes? Of course we are," Bedford said. "But hopefully, we cut the mistakes down, where the majority of guys we get here are right for this program."

Per TFB:
JK Dobbins: La Grange (TX) Ohio State RB commit JK Dobbins and his mother will visit Columbus for the first time this weekend. After talking to JK and a source close to him, this visit is huge in terms of how much of a chance other schools have to flip him.

I expect to see JK back in Austin sometime either this spring or summer and RB coach Anthony Johnson hasn’t stopped recruiting Dobbins at all. Just wanted to pass along that this weekend is a big one in regards to Dobbin’ recruitment. – (Andrew)
