Recruiting Thread 2018

Hopefully he has a career like Henry Melton, Chris Whaley or Lamar Houston, guys who started out elsewhere and turned into monster Dlinemen.

The Aggy 247 mods were writing articles predicting a top 10 recruiting finish, maybe even top 5, when Fisher came over. Now Tarp is writing excuse manifestos for A&M. Sumlin left them with 15 recruits and a top 15 class. Since Fisher came over they are out of the top 30.

By comparison, Strong left Herman with just 5 recruits (6 if you count the guy who didn't even qualify lol) with a ranking outside the top 50. Herman added 12 players to get to a 25th ranked class. (and so far looks like they have a good eye for talent)

You know I was looking at the rivals national top 100 list. On the top 40 only one? recruit is from Texas. I mean states like GA and NC have 3 or more before the next Texas kid on the list.

Wth is going on here?

That article is hysterical. Chock full of sunshine pumping and bullshit.

I think Aggy is gonna find out that while Sumlin may not be the greatest coach ever he was pretty good for them, and the difference between Sumlin and Fisher isn’t gonna be worth the near 100 million their going to end up paying the pair.

Williams is Roach 2.0

This close to 2018 is going to be nice! Eight more is the plan, 4 are known, 2 have left clues.

In fairness, I think aggy, as any school should, get a pass on first year recruiting when a first year coach comes on board in the middle of the recruiting process. Starting next year, we'll have a better barometer on a&m's recruiting under Fisher.

Agree. Aggy will get their fair share in 2019.

The early signing period changed things a little also, but you are correct; next year will tell more. Looks like you are having a great class.

EJ's Confidence Board:

Should Be In:

RB Keaontay Ingram, Carthage — Ingram has been committed to Texas since late May and is completely solid. Ingram does not have any official visits set up, and there is no imminent threat in his recruitment. Texas should be able to keep him locked in until National Signing Day.

DL Daniel Carson, William Chrisman (MO) — Texas defensive line coach Oscar Giles and Assistant Director of Player Personnel Bryan Carrington won Carson over on his in-home visit last week as he gave the Longhorns a verbal commitment last Friday. He will sign on signing day.

DL Michael Williams, Dunham School (La.) — UT's newest commit, Williams gave the Longhorns a verbal pledge shortly following his official visit this weekend. He will sign with Texas on signing day.

NT Keondre Coburn, Spring Westfield — Coburn gave Texas a verbal pledge in August but has always been adamant about keeping his options open. The four-star prospect visited Miami over the weekend and plans to make a couple more official visits as the cycle comes to a close. The most likely stops are TCU and Texas A&M. Still, we have reason to believe he will stick with the Longhorns.

DE/OLB Joseph Ossai, Conroe Oak Ridge — Ossai’s recruitment has been one of the most interesting of the cycle. But it appears the Longhorns have taken the overwhelming lead over Texas A&M in this one. Texas made a tremendous push while Texas A&M scrambled to find a defensive coordinator and took command late last week when a trio of coaches made an in-home visit. This one isn’t over just yet, but Texas is in a prime position to seal the deal.

OL Calvin Anderson, Rice — Welcome to the confidence board, graduate transfers. Now that we are including them in our recruiting coverage, it's safe to put Anderson in this category. The ex-Rice offensive lineman had an incredible official visit over the weekend and told Horns247 that the Longhorns were firmly at the top of his list. Anderson will no longer be making all five officials since Texas 'will be tough to beat.' The biggest threat to UT is Michigan, which will host him for an OV this weekend. Auburn and Oklahoma are on the outside looking in.

Major Players:

WR Joshua Moore, Yoakum — Texas made a big impression on Moore during his official visit over the weekend and is surging in his recruitment. Moore’s mother graduated from Texas, the family is related to Oscar Giles and cornerbacks coach Jason Washington made a huge impact when he visited Moore early in the contact period. Moore now feels like he’s a priority for Texas and believes he can play early. This recruitment has been wild, but Texas should feel very confident here. Don't be surprised if he moves into the above category soon.

WR Lawrence Keys III, McDonogh 35 (La.) — Welcome back to the confidence board. After eliminating Texas entirely just a little more than a week ago, Keys is now extremely high on the Longhorns after hosting Drew Mehringer and X-factor Bryan Carrington for an in-home visit last week. Keys has been in contact with Carrington since he made a visit in the spring, and the two have a great relationship. Notre Dame was considered to be the leader here, but Fighting Irish's lead is dwindling. Texas has a chance to move into the pole position this weekend when it hosts him for an official visit.

OL Casey Tucker, Stanford — Anderson isn't the only grad transfer the Longhorns are looking at. Texas is also making a push for Tucker, an ex-Stanford offensive lineman. Anderson made an official visit to Texas a few weeks ago, and we were told he was impressed with everything on campus. Tucker has a great relationship with new offensive line coach Herb Hand, who will play a big role in his recruitment. Texas is in a great spot here, but he still plans to make official visits to Arizona State, Colorado and TCU.

DL Moro Ojomo, Katy — Ojomo's recruitment has taken a bit of a weird turn. Texas A&M was considered the heavy favorite a couple of weeks ago, but now, it appears the Aggies are out of it. This one is basically a good, old Oklahoma-Texas recruiting battle. The Sooners impressed him on his official visit earlier this month, but the Longhorns will have their chance to make an impression this weekend. If things go well, Texas has an opportunity to move into sole possession of first place in the race for Ojomo's services.

DL Vernon Jackson, Boling — An Alabama commit, Jackson opted not to sign early and is taking a hard look at options closer to home. Jackson recently made an official visit to Texas , and we were told the Longhorns hit a grand slam. According to a source close to Jackson’s recruitment, the three-star prospect is leaning towards staying closer to home — Texas and Texas A&M are the big players in-state. Alabama, however, had him on campus for an OV over the weekend.

DL Caleb Okechukwu, St. John’s (DC) — Texas is keeping Okechukwu warm after a successful official visit over the weekend. If the Longhorns decide to make a strong push over the next couple of weeks, they will be right at the top of his list. Either way, Texas is currently a finalist along with Arkansas and Tennessee. He will visit the latter two over the final two weekends before National Signing Day.

Work To Do:

WR Tommy Bush, Schertz Clemens — Texas is back in the mix with Bush. The Longhorns staff made the short trip to see him last week and are now actively recruiting him. However, Bush only has one official visit left and is not sure if he will use it on Texas. Bush is also considering Arkansas, Baylor and Florida for his final trip. Texas was a top school for Bush early on, but contact dropped off throughout the fall. Texas needs to make up ground in a short period of time.

DL Tyree Wilson, West Rusk — Wilson is currently committed to Texas A&M, but his recruitment is far from over. He made an official visit to Arkansas over the weekend and might make it out to Texas this weekend. Wilson isn't necessarily a priority target, so it's more of wait and see approach with him just like with the aforementioned Okechukwu. If Texas does get him on campus and goes all in on him, this recruitment will get very interesting.

Outside Looking In:

QB Tanner McKee, Corona Centennial (Calif.) — Texas is still a top school for the four-star signal-caller. The Longhorns hosted him for an OV this season and made a nice impression. However, Stanford is the heavy favorite, and BYU is likely running second.

WR Jaylen Waddle, Houston Bellaire Episcopal — Texas was actually the favorite for Waddle early in his recruitment. However, the Longhorns slipped throughout the offseason. He didn’t use an OV on Texas but might make an unofficial visit this month. Texas A&M appears to be the heavy favorite here.

WR Jalen Preston, Manvel — Preston is committed to Texas A&M but is still looking to make official visits elsewhere. Texas recently reached out and might host him for an OV. But unless that happens, there is little to no chance in this one.

OL Nicholas Petit-Frere, Berkley Prep (Fla.) — Texas is looking to make a late push for the five-star prospect, but the Longhorns don’t appear to be a major factor here. UT will need to get him on campus for an official visit this month to have any type of shot.

ATH Jashaun Corbin, Rockledge (Fla.) — Texas just extended an offer to Corbin last week and is recruiting him as a do-it-all athlete. However, the Longhorns have plenty of work to do. The four-star prospect has offers from across the country, and Florida State seems like the heavy favorite.

Roach - WR Moore Recaps Visit

Joshua Moore was a frequent visitor to Austin over the last few years.

Charlie Strong’s staff recruited he and his brother Jordan hard, but Josh hasn’t been to Austin much since the hiring of new head coach Tom Herman.

However, Herman and company recently re-offered and hosted the four-star wide receiver for an official visit this weekend. Moore said he felt at home at UT.

“I think the thing that sticks out to me the most when I think back on my visit is how much love the coaches showed me and how genuine and real they were," Moore said. "They never changed a bit.”

Moore said the entire visit was a highlight from top to bottom, but it was also his first time seeing the renovated facilities.

“It went great," he said. "That was my first time seeing the locker room and updated weight room. Being able to spend time with a lot of the players and coaches was great also.”

Moore was hosted on the visit by John Burt. Spending time with the players, including a few of the early enrollees, made a big impact on him.

“John is alike a big bro to me,” he said. “They asked who I wanted my host to bem and I said him because he’s doing exactly what I want to do at the next level, which is run track and play football. It’s a family environment here.

"Brennan Eagles, BJ Foster and Anthony Cook are all guys I’m real close with, so that’s what made this visit real special.”

Moore still has remaining visits to Florida State and Oregon, and he plans to make a decision on National Signing Day. The Texas staff has done a great job hosting official visits this season, and Moore’s was no exception.

“Just being able to get back here was great, man,” Moore said. “The whole visit was awesome. If I could take the official visit more than once, I would.”

At 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Moore is ranked as the No. 16 wide receiver in the country and No. 9 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

This year has been a good reminder to be patient in the recruiting game. I think people were very concerned with our OL and DL classes but it is looking like both will shape up very nicely.

3 4 star tackles on the O-line, a JUCO for immediate depth with the possibility of a plug and play Grad Transfer or two.

It seems like things are pretty secure with Coburn as our stud on the inside of the D-line with Ossai being a solid get at DE. The addition of Mike Williams could really pay off as he is an uber athlete with size and Daniel Carson was a good pickup at DE. Adding Ojomo would provide great depth and he is another guy who could really blossom.

Thanks for all these reports Scholz!

Yep. Texas fans are fooling themselves if they think aggy won’t be a pain in the ass for next year’s recruiting class.

But it’s still a hell of a lot of fun to watch them squirm and cry after they declared Herman and his staff a bunch of recruiting incompetents during last year’s transition class, and after they puffed their chests out last month about flipping all of our recruits this year.

if we win, they're less a pain. obviously. we win BIG-- and it's not off the table, much to the chagrin of some of you sky is falling types-- it doesn't matter what they do. when Texas wins big, they tend to get mostly whatever they want. before aggy gets pissy, i'm just going on 100 years of history. the only way it swings is when a) a UT coach is either incompetent (strong, mcwilliams, mackovic) or gets fat and happy (mack, royal-- ohhh, you forget the mid 60s?); or b) they cheat (see:sherrill, jackie; and bryant, paul). those are the only ways it's been done historically. so if aggy believes herman is a bad coach, there is hope. if he is not, better open up those wallets.

Hopefully he has a career like Henry Melton, Chris Whaley or Lamar Houston, guys who started out elsewhere and turned into monster Dlinemen.

Hopefully he just starts on DL and ends on DL. Whaley flashed in a few games but he hardly in the same class as Melton or Houston.

Rice grad transfer OT Calvin Anderson was just featured in an article on theathletic.com site.

On Texas visit:

"I had really high expectations and they were still exceeded. We did a lot of touring, did a lot of talking, did a lot of getting to know. I would grade it a 100 out of 10. Coach Herman is a very inviting guy, and I think that's what makes him so popular with the players there. I ate good this weekend, that's for sure. It was incredible."

No doubt that aggy will do better next year but the incompetence they have shown these past few months has been impressive.

A new coach comes in and the goal is to keep most of the current commits, add a few big time players and then fill in the class with the best of the rest. Aggy has lost/is losing a lot of big name commits or guys that were strong aggy leans. On top of that, they are failing to even get in contention with guys that have popped up after NSD1. The new staff has not landed a single new commitment since they showed up in "The station".

That is very true, but with the way Herman is recruiting if he can have some success on the field Jimbo is probably going to face an uphill battle on the recruiting trail in 19 and beyond.

I think recruit rankings are fun but mean little presently. The proof is in the pudding. By the way what does that term mean?

The original term centuries ago was, 'the proof of the pudding(a type of sausage back then) is in the eating. '

aggy is all about tradition, as we all know. they have the greatest traditions in the history of ever and if you don't believe them, just ask another one of them. having said that, what is a more fun tradition than aggy de-commit season? i mean, it's fun every... single... year. they get their little hopes up, grab their nootz so they can yell real loud, then one by one, dudes change their minds about going there. it's a hoot

EJ's updates:

— I checked in with a source close to four-star defensive end Joseph Ossai, who told me the plan is for him to announce on National Signing Day at around 10:30 a.m. Right now, we are still feeling very confident about where Texas sits in his recruitment. The Longhorns will see him this week as they continue to press. A&M remains a factor, but Texas is clearly the team to beat moving forward.

— There has been a ton of chatter today about four-star Manvel wide receiver Jalen Preston. As we first reported, Preston plans to make an official visit to Texas on Feb. 2. However, Texas A&M made an in-home visit tonight and is set to host him for an official visit this weekend. The Aggies are going to do everything they can to stop the trip to Texas. But as of right now, he is still scheduled to make it in.

— Notre Dame made a big impression on four-star wide receiver Lawrence Keys III on his OV over the weekend and will make an in-home visit with him on Thursday. The Fighting Irish are trying to do everything they can to get Keys to shut it down, but I’m told he will definitely visit Texas this weekend. If the Longhorns knock it out of the park, I could easily see him sticking closer to home.

— According to a source close to the Michael Williams recruitment, Mississippi State is looking to get involved as signing day approaches. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Bulldogs offer, but right now, we expect him to stick to his commitment to Texas and sign with the Longhorns in a couple of weeks.

Also, this is pretty embarrassing and a big vote of no confidence for Jimbo Fisher. They were touting this guy as NFL, great franchise, etc., he took one look at collie station and that's a nope. Probably helps us bigly with both Coburn and Ossai.

Two Key visitors will be in Austin this weekend to see if Herman can keep his recruiting MOJOmo going.

Excuse the bad puns: Slot WR Lawrence Keys and DT Moro Ojomo will be in the house. We are battling against ND and OU respectively with many people thinking we will land Ojomo and Keys probably 50/50.

I see what you did there lol

From what I’ve seen, it’s more like 80% with Ojomo and 20% with Keys — so around 50/50 that we land both, but much more likely that we just get Ojomo.
