Recruiting Thread 2018

OB War Room:

(From Anwar)

If there is one thing Texas fans should know about coach Tom Herman, it’s that he is not a complacent when it comes to acquiring talent.

After watching Sam Ehlinger and Shane Buechele battle during spring practice, Herman did everything within his power to acquire former LSU grad transfer quarterback Brandon Harris. When Harris decided to attend North Carolina, Herman went all chips in on former Notre Dame grad transfer quarterback Malik Zaire, who eventually signed with Florida. Herman did not acquire the quarterbacks he desired, but he did not go out without a fight.
Herman had to endure an offensive line that did not live up to his expectations this season. Former Texas left tackle Connor Williams spent most of last season on the sidelines due to injury, while tackle Elijah Rodriguez did not play until the bowl game. With those players out of the lineup, Texas’ offensive line struggled in run and pass blocking last season. Herman used injuries to explain his team’s poor offensive line play to the media, but behind the scenes, he demanded more from his coaching staff. Specifically, offensive line coach Derek Warehime needed to do more, and he has a chance to add a player this weekend.

From what I was told, Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck and Warehime will meet with Rice grad transfer left tackle Calvin Anderson on Friday. They will travel to Houston where Anderson lives in an effort to convince him to sign with Texas.

The good news, for Texas, is Anderson wants to play for the Longhorns.
I spoke to a person associated with Anderson on Thursday and was told the offensive lineman is very excited about meeting with Beck and Warehime. From what I can tell, if Friday’s meeting goes well, there is a strong possibility Anderson will join the program.

It sounds like Warehime has also been actively recruiting Stanford’s Casey Tucker and Florida’s Antonio Riles. I spoke to a source in Gainesville who told me Riles graduated in December and will not be back at Florida. The knock on Riles is he put on bad weight after sustaining a knee injury, but the guard is on Warehime’s radar.

We will keep you posted.

The recruiting dead period ends on Thursday at midnight, opening the doors for coaches and prospects to once again have face-to-face contact, mostly beginning with official visits this weekend.

A handful of prospects, both committed and uncommitted, have confirmed to OB that they’ll be in Austin this weekend. Let’s take a look …

B.J. Foster – S – Angelton - The UT signee will take his official visit this weekend since he wasn’t able to in December. Foster will begin classes at Texas on Tuesday, so it’ll be a quick turnaround for him. Foster is fresh off an extremely impressive performance at the Under Armour All-American Game. He’s the type of player, along with some of the early enrollees like Caden Sterns, Anthony Cook and Casey Thompson, who are very personable and I’d expect Foster will help UT’s efforts on the uncommitted players who will be in town.

Vernon Jackson – DE – Boling – Jackson remains committed to Alabama, but has been in close contact with Texas over the last couple months and the Longhorns are squarely in the mix on this one. Jackson has told us that Texas is looking at him as a DE (probably more of a combo DE/LB), while Alabama likes him at LB. Obviously, big selling points for Texas would be staying closer to home, and the opportunity to play early. Jackson is scheduled to visit Alabama next weekend and he could very well sort through his options all the way until National Signing Day. He’s been committed to Bama for so long that it’s hard to call Texas a favorite, but the Longhorns are very much within striking distance.

Joshua Moore – WR – Yoakum – The one-time wide receiver commitment is squarely back on UT’s radar and the Longhorns will host him on a key official visit this weekend. After decommitting from Nebraska, a lot of people assumed Moore would wind up at A&M with his brother, especially once Jimbo Fisher was hired, but this one feels wide open from what I’ve gathered. I expect Texas to make a strong move this weekend with a good official visit. The challenge would then be to hold off schools like Florida State (visit next weekend) and the Aggies.

A source told OB on Tuesday that Stanford graduate transfer offensive lineman Casey Tucker was expected to visit Texas this weekend if things went according to plan. Unfortunately, things have gone quiet since then, so we’ll put Tucker in the “maybe” category for this weekend. Regardless, we do expect him to visit Texas at some point. Visits to TCU and Colorado are also in the works.

******
The biggest remaining recruiting need for Texas is in the defensive front seven, where the Longhorns continue to look for talent at defensive end, possibly at d-tackle and at B-backer. There are quite a few targets on the radar, including a few who have scheduled official visits, and it’ll be interesting to see how Texas handles its defensive line/linebacker recruiting over the next month. Does it wind up being first come, first served? Or does the staff hold out for some of the top targets on the board, even if others are prepared to commit before players like Joseph Ossai and Vernon Jackson are ready?

Let’s take a look at where things currently stand …

Vernon Jackson – As mentioned above, Jackson will visit Texas this weekend. He was an Alabama lean before committing to the Crimson Tide in September, but has always had one eye on Texas and his interest in the Longhorns has seemed to have picked up in the last couple months. Tough one to call, and Jackson doesn’t likely make a final decision any time soon.

Joseph Ossai – This has been one of the more interesting recruitments to follow for a long while. He was believed to be a strong A&M lean early in the process, but could never get over the hump to pull the trigger on an Aggie commitment. Texas has hung around and basically made this a dead heat of a two-team race. It looked in December like things might tip A&M’s way, but Ossai has remained patient as the Aggies changed up their staff. There’s been some thought that A&M keeping assistant Terry Price would lock Ossai up for the Aggies, but I’m not buying that. If Price was a tipping point, he likely would have committed to A&M long ago. Look for Ossai to take his decision all the way until signing day.

Caleb Okechukwu – A new name on the Texas radar, Oscar Giles started talking to the Washington D.C. St. John's College High product after the Under Armour All-American game, and Okechukwu is now planning to take a UT visit in January. Can Texas make a sudden move to the top of his list? We’ll see, and it could very well depend on how the staff feels about other players on the board, but in talking to Okechukwu’s coach this week, there is a very strong interest.

Mike Williams – The Baton Rouge Dunham prospect is set to take his official visit to Texas next week. If the Longhorns offer, this one looks really good for UT. More on him in a bit.

Tyree Wilson – He’s committed to Texas A&M but is taking visits, so the door is open. Wilson will visit Arkansas this weekend and per someone I spoke with this week, he’s also expected to visit Texas and TCU. Lots of Arkansas talk right now, but let’s see what the vibe is after this weekend’s visit.

Daniel Carson - He visited Texas in September but this guy NEVER talks so it's tough to gauge what he's thinking. He'll visit Nebraska this weekend, which could be worth watching closely.

Courtre Alexander When Texas first offered him before the Early Signing Period and Alexander took a UT official visit, it looked like he was all but in for the Longhorns. But then Arkansas offered and Alexander decided to slow things down. He’ll now visit Arkansas this weekend, which will be interesting with both him and Tyree Wilson on campus together. Could one siding with Arkansas push the other UT’s way? We’ll see.

Moro Ojomo – One of the only DTs Texas is actively recruiting (along with Keondre Coburn), I’m still expecting Ojomo to visit UT at some point but the competition is suddenly pretty stiff with the likes of A&M, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Oklahoma having recently offered. Ojomo released a top seven on Thursday that included Texas. The Longhorns have to get him on campus to have any shot, and even with that, it’ll be a tough fight to land his signature.

******
Baton Rouge Dunham defensive line/linebacker prospect Mike Williams doesn’t have a UT offer yet, but he’s hopeful that will change soon, perhaps even before he heads to Austin next weekend for his official visit. Even without the offer, the Longhorns are sitting in a good position.
Right now, Texas is at the top of my list,” Williams said. “I haven’t received an offer from them, but one of the coaches told me when my position coach comes out to visit me, they’ll offer me.
“I started talking to them maybe in December. I’ve been talking to Oscar Giles and Jason Washington. They basically told me they wanted me to play outside linebacker/end, kind of a combo position.”

Williams holds about 10 offers, including scholarships from Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arizona State, Ole Miss and LSU. He has already visited LSU and likes the in-state school, but I’m told the Tigers don’t have room for his commitment at this point. He’ll visit Tennessee this weekend, and this one looks like it could come down to the Longhorns and the Volunteers.
His thoughts on his three favorites …

“Right now they’re showing me the most love. I like their facilities, the campus, I know a couple players that go there already (Malcolm Roach). So it wouldn’t feel too much like I’m away from home.”
Tennessee – “They’re the second school showing me the most love. I say they’re second because I don’t know how I feel about going all the way to Knoxville.”

LSU – “LSU, I’ve been there a lot, I know the coaches well. I feel like we’ve built relationships. I like the campus, the improvements they’ve made, the things they have to help student athletes after football.”

Williams actually played QB most of his high school career, so he’s a bit of a project on the defensive side of the ball (he admits as much), but he is a big kid who can move so it’s easy to see why college coaches like his potential.

“I played quarterback my whole high school career. Everything on the defensive side of the ball, I’d have to improve on,” Williams said. “Coaches have said they can see my potential as a linebacker. LSU told me they see me being like Kendall Beckwith.”

******
Texas has two quarterbacks in the 2018 class who will be starting classes next week, but the staff does continue to recruit Tanner McKee. For those who are unaware, McKee will take a two-year mission trip after graduating high school so he’ll essentially be a 2020 signee.
The Corona (CA) Centennial product participated in the Army Bowl last weekend and we caught up with him to see where things stand. McKee has taken official visits to Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama and Washington. He’ll visit Stanford in January.

His thoughts on the Longhorns …

“Texas is really high, obviously. I took an official there. I think coach Herman is a great coach and I feel like he’s going to make it a great program really fast,” McKee said.

The 6-6, 220-pounder probably won’t commit until very late in the process and said he probably will not sign right away. He may sign one year into his mission trip, or he may wait until he’s ready to enroll in a college in a couple years.

Stanford gets the last visit and most people believe the Cardinal are the team to beat here.

“I just feel like their education is obviously off the charts. I think their offense will prepare you for the NFL and it’s just a great program overall,” McKee said. “Coach Shaw is a great coach.”
McKee on people picking Stanford to win out … “I’m not positive of exactly where I want to go yet. I’m just making the rounds. That’s why I’m making all these officials to see where I feel most comfortable.”

Texas remains in the mix here but with Stanford having the final official visit, this one looks like it’s trending that way. All that being said, McKee could be a player we’re covering again in a couple years if things change at the school he chooses between now and the time he starts his college career.

If we can add one or two grad transfer OL our outlook next year goes from being average to maybe big 12 contender.

Two new offers out today:
JUCO OL Johncarlo Valentine, the number 2 OG JUCO recruit.

Jashaun Corbin - a 4 star all-purpose back who could fill the need at slot. He is a recent FSU commit and would fill a position of need for us.

Things have been back and forth with Joseph Ossai throughout his recruitment and things have recently surged back in Texas' favor. After receiving an in home featuring Oscar Giles and new 10th assistant Bryan Carrington, there seems to be some positive momentum in our favor. He is a priority target for both Texas and TAMU so this one is far from over.

There were also a few crystal balls for WR Joshua Moore. I haven't heard or seen info on any recent visits with him but he would be a great get at WR and pulling him from TAMU would certainly lead to any entertaining meltdown.

Vernon Jackson - Ath (DE for us) and Bama commit, will visit this weekend.

Vernon made it to campus this past weekend. I haven't heard anything about the visit but Texas is going to continue to push here. The kid is a great athlete and would be a great help along at DE/OLB.

From IT article by Nahlin and how he feels Texas 'leads' for (and his percentage they end up at Texas).

Joseph Ossai, Conroe Oak Ridge, DE/OLB 80%
Josh Moore, Yoakum, WR 70%
Michael Williams, Dunham School (Baton Rouge), DE 60%
Caleb Okechukwu, St. John's School (DC), DE 60%

EJ: Confidence Board - Where UT Stands With Remaining Targets

As the end of the dead period nears, Texas is looking to put the icing on an impressive 2018 recruiting class.

Here is a look at where the Longhorns stand with prospects still on the market.

Should Be In

RB Keaontay Ingram, Carthage — Ingram has been committed to Texas since late May and is completely solid. Ingram does not have any official visits set up, and there is no imminent threat in his recruitment. Texas should be able to keep him locked in until National Signing Day.

NT Keondre Coburn, Spring Westfield — Coburn gave Texas a verbal pledge in August but has always been adamant about keeping his options open. The four-star prospect plants to make a couple of official visits as the cycle comes to a close. The most likely stops are TCU and Texas A&M, which visited him on Monday. Still, we have reason to believe he will stick with the Longhorns.

DE/OLB Joseph Ossai, Conroe Oak Ridge — Ossai’s recruitment has been one of the most interesting of the cycle. But it appears the Longhorns have taken the overwhelming lead over Texas A&M in this one. Texas made a tremendous push while Texas A&M scrambled to find a defensive coordinator and took command late last week when a trio of coaches made an in-home visit. This one isn’t over just yet, but Texas is in a prime position to seal the deal.

Major Players

WR Joshua Moore, Yoakum — Texas will host Moore for an official visit this weekend and is surging in his recruitment. Moore’s mother graduated from Texas, the family is related to Oscar Giles and cornerbacks coach Jason Washington made a huge impact when he visited Moore last week. Moore now feels like he’s a priority for Texas and believes he can play early. This recruitment has been wild, but Texas should feel very optimistic here.

DL Vernon Jackson, Boling — An Alabama commit, Jackson opted not to sign early and is taking a hard look at options closer to home. Jackson made an official visit to Texas over the weekend, and we were told the Longhorns hit a grand slam. According to a source close to Jackson’s recruitment, the three-star prospect is leaning towards staying closer to home — Texas and Texas A&M are the big players in-state. But Alabama will have a chance to strengthen his commitment on his official visit this weekend.

DL Caleb Okechukwu, St. John’s (DC) — Texas has not extended an offer to Okechukwu, but he has been in frequent contact with Oscar Giles over the last couple of weeks. Okechukwu will make an official visit to UT this weekend and is looking forward to seeing Austin. If Texas offers, the Longhorns would be a top school along with Tennessee.

DL Michael Williams, Dunham School (La.) — It seems like both Alabama and LSU do not have room for Williams, which means the door is wide open here. Texas has not offered, but the Longhorns are set to host the intriguing three-star prospect for an official visit this weekend. Texas would likely vault up as the favorite with an offer.

Work To Do

ATH Jashaun Corbin, Rockledge (Fla.) — Texas just extended an offer to Corbin last week and is recruiting him as a do-it-all athlete. However, the Longhorns have plenty of work to do. The four-star prospect has offers from across the country, and Florida State seems like the heavy favorite.

DL Moro Ojomo, Katy — Ojomo has seen his stock rise over the last few weeks as he’s earned offers from across the country. Texas was seen as the leader last after an offer was extended, but Texas A&M now seems to be in the pole position after extending a scholarship of its own. Ojomo will make official visits to both schools, but A&M seems like the favorite at this time.

DL Daniel Carson, William Chrisman (MO) — Carson has been keeping his recruitment close to the vest, but from what we have been able to gather Nebraska and Texas are at the top of his list with Miami on the outside looking in. He made an official visit to UT in September and was visited by Oscar Giles before the dead period. However, Nebraska has been trending on the Crystal Ball and hosted him for an official visit over the weekend. Right now, the Cornhuskers have the edge here.

DL Tyree Wilson, West Rusk — Wilson is currently committed to Texas A&M, but his recruitment is far from over. He will make an official visit to Arkansas this weekend and might make it out to Texas on Jan. 26. The Longhorns need to continue building a relationship with him over the next couple of weeks.

Outside Looking In

QB Tanner McKee, Corona Centennial (Calif.) — Texas is still a top school for the four-star signal-caller. The Longhorns hosted him for an OV this season and made a nice impression. However, Stanford is the heavy favorite, and BYU is likely running second.

WR Jaylen Waddle, Houston Bellaire Episcopal — Texas was actually the favorite for Waddle early in his recruitment. However, the Longhorns slipped throughout the offseason. He didn’t use an OV on Texas but is likely to make an unofficial visit this month. Texas A&M appears to be the heavy favorite here.

WR Jalen Preston, Manvel — Preston is committed to Texas A&M but is still looking to make official visits elsewhere. Texas recently reached out and might host him for an OV. But unless that happens, there is little to no chance in this one.

OL Nicholas Petit-Frere, Berkley Prep (Fla.) — Texas is looking to make a late push for the five-star prospect, but the Longhorns don’t appear to be a major factor here. UT will need to get him on campus for an official visit this month to have any type of shot.

DL Courtre Alexander, Owasso (Okla.) — It doesn't appear that Texas is making too hard of a push here. On top of that Arkansas is hosting him this weekend and appears to be in a great position to land him.

With 10 spots open on the 85 man roster and likely more to come from attrition here's a good look at how we may finish this cycle:

1. RB Ingram
2. DT Coburn
3. LB Ossai
4. 1 of OT Anderson (Rice Grad) or OT Tucker (Stanford Grad)
5. ATH Jackson
6. DE Williams
7. DE Okechukwu
8. 1 of WR Waddle or WR Moore
9. DL Ojomo
10. ????

(This is also best case scenario)

Like the new coaching hire from Auburn. Supposed to be great O line coach and expert re: play action concepts out of the spread.

E.J. Holland: Movement with key DL target Daniel Carson

Texas seems to be moving in the right direction with one of its key defensive line targets. Both Oscar Giles and Bryan Carrington flew out to Missouri to meet with three-star prospect Daniel Carson. Giles has been working on Carson for a while and has developed a strong relationship. But the X-factor in some of these heated recruitments continues to be Carrington. Carrington has been working hard on Carson behind the scenes over the last several months. Getting him out to see Carson was huge since the two had not had face-to-face contact since Carson’s official visit in early September. With Carrington assisting Giles, the gap between Nebraska and Texas has certainly narrowed. In fact, I would go as far as to say this is a tie with Texas gaining momentum hence why I changed my Crystal Ball to foggy.

Nebraska hosted Carson for an official visit, and we heard the Cornhuskers were likely to come away with a commitment. The fact that no decision was made plus tonight’s in-home visit were huge victories for the Longhorns. From what we have been able to gather, distance from home is a factor in Carson’s recruitment. But if the Longhorns can get over what now seems to be a smaller hill, they could add a very important piece to the puzzle. Carson doesn’t have a firm decision date, so a decision could come at any time. At 6-foot-5, 260 pounds, Carson is ranked as the No. 22 strong-side defensive end in the country and No. 9 overall prospect in the state of Missouri, per 247Sports Composite.

— Texas hit the road hard today, especially in Florida. The Longhorns saw one of their newest targets in Rockledge (Fla.) all-purpose back Jashaun Corbin. It is still unclear exactly where the Longhorns stand or if they’ll get an official visit, but Texas is definitely pushing for his services. Corbin would be a great compliment to Keaontay Ingram and could also see some time in the slot. He has official visits set to Nebraska and Texas A&M this month, which means Feb. 2 is the only OV weekend he has available.

— Texas obviously stopped by Florida power St. Thomas Aquinas and extended a ridiculous nine offers. Some of the headliners were four-star 2019 defensive linemen Braylen Ingraham, four-star 2019 outside linebacker Anthony Solomon and four-star 2019 cornerback Jaden Davis. It’s clear the Longhorns are trying to build a pipeline at St. Thomas Aquinas, which regularly produces FBS prospects.

— Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando made his way to the West Coast and stopped by Golden Valley (Calif.) to see four-star 2019 outside linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd. The Longhorns have been in contact with Floyd, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see an offer come his way in the near future. Floyd currently holds 21 offers.

— It is unclear if Orlando will stop by to see four-star 2018 Junipero Serra (Calif.) outside linebacker Merlin Robertson — I’m working to find out — during his time in California, but obviously, it would make sense. Robertson is on the Longhorns’ radar, and Texas still has a need at linebacker this cycle. He has two official visits remaining.

— It’s clear Texas is doing whatever it takes to expand its national brand. The Longhorns landed a handful of out-of-state prospects this cycle and are position themselves to garner even more in 2019. We’ve mentioned California cornerback Chris Steele as a strong possibility, but another out-of-state defensive back to keep an eye on is Grayson (GA) product Kenyatta Watson II. He is high on Texas early on and will make a visit to Austin on Feb. 10.

Closing out the recruiting class - Update

Texas has had a successful recruiting season so far and inked 19 players on NSD1 with 2 commits waiting to sign. Texas will look to add between 5-8 more players on NSD2. Let's take a position by position look at who the remaining targets may be.

QB: Done with Cam Rising and Casey Thompson Signed. Caveat, could still sign McKee who wouldn't enroll until 2020.
- Texas has kept themselves in this recruitment but I think many would be shocked to see McKee sign with us. Stanford or BYU seem like more likely outcomes

RB: Done with Keontay Ingram, didn't sign due to team in playoffs
- Texas may sign a "RB", but one in the scat-back/slot WR mold. The current target is 4 star APB Jashaun Corbin out of Florida. I'm not sure if we would take both a true slot WR (Moore or Waddle) and this guy, or if he is a secondary option to one of those two.

WR: 2 on board in Eagles and Woodard.
Need 1 slot WR. There are plenty of available options and Texas has links to many players.
- Jaylen Waddle - the top option remaining. Felt spurned by Texas based on early commitments of other slot WRs. Many have felt this ship has sailed but Waddle has been hanging with Texas commits at Army AA game and throwing up the horns.
We continue to get some good vibes from Waddle but the feeling remains that he will not be a Longhorn. He may get back on campus which would be huge and could turn things back in our favor.
Per IT, 30% chance at this point.

- Joshua Moore - will take visits, 5th visit down to TAMU vs UT
Plans to visit Texas soon. There wasn't a lot of action here for a while but things picked up recently and Texas has made him a priority for the slot WR position.
Per IT, 70% chance at this point

- Jalen Preston - TAMU commit, may visit UT
Still no clear plan for a visit. If so, we may have a chance.
- Justin Watkins - previous UT commit. Classes at other programs may be full, will Texas get back in this one? I don't think so. Likely Florida bound
- Tommy Bush - not a slot and probably not being pursued by Texas much at this time.
- Rondale Moore - recent UT decommit. Likely Purdue bond.
- Lawrence Keys III - Recent UT offer, LSU the favorite but do they have room for a WR?
Haven't heard anything on Keys in a while. Maybe things have cooled with him as they have heated up with others at the position.

TE: Done with Malcolm Epps

OL: Done with HS players in Ghirmai, Angilau, Moore and JUCO Grandy.
-Nicholas Petit-Frere, 5 star OT Long shot effort for at UA game. It doesn't seem like this gained any traction.
- Texas is definitely in the Grad Transfer Market and could look to take up to 2 players.
- Calvin Anderson is an OT out of Rice. He is from Austin and is definitely looking for a school where he could start at tackle from the start. He was being recruited by Herb Hand at Auburn, so it can't hurt that Hand is a Horn now. We should have a really good chance here.
- Things also look good with Stanford transfer Casey Tucker. He played Tackle at Stanford but could also be moved to guard. If both of these guys join, that would likely be the outcome.
- There haven't really been other names pop up (other than Johncarlo Valentine who committed to Baylor) so it seems Texas is most focused on these two transfers.

DT: None signed.
-Keondre Coburn: Need to keep in the fold. He will take visits but is still committed and says he will likely sign with Texas. Hanging with 7 other Texas commits at UA game can't hurt.
- Coburn seemed all Texas while at the UA game. Lots of drama surrounding TAMU and TCU staffs not being able to visit his HS. He did meet with a few coaches during in-home visits (pics were from the sidewalk, so unsure if they made it in the door). No reports of visits scheduled for him, so either a very good sign for us, or he is keeping visits on the low down. I think we land him when all is said and done.
- Moro Ojomo. Unclear if they want both Coburn and Ojomo. Ojomo appears to be TAMU lean. Ojomo still seems TAMU bound. If things are solid with Coburn, taking 1 DT is fine. We only play one at a time.

DE: None signed - Things have been active here.
- Joseph Ossai - top target. Has been a TAMU lean but recent news has Texas in the lead. Lack of TAMU DC may be part of the cause.
This has been a back and forth drama for sure. TAMU seemed to be back in the lead but after a very successful in home visit with Giles, Orlando and Carrington, things are strongly in our favor. Lots of Crystal Ball picks, TAMU mods seeming to concede, and confidence from our side.
According to IT, 80% and possibly already wrapped up.

- Daniel Carson - Texas keeping on the 3 star DE from Mo. This one looked to be all Nebraska for a while. However, Nebraska has signed 4 DL already and after an in home with Giles and Carrington, Texas picked up some major momentum last night.
- Vernon Jackson - current Bama commit. The talk around him has died down a bit. V-Jack was on campus this past weekend and things went very well. Still a tall task to flip him from Bama but Texas is back in the running here for the uber athlete.
- Courtre Alexander - Recent offer, likely a backup based on the two listed above. Not a lot to say here, things have slowed and Arkansas is the likely destination.
- Michael Williams - No offer yet but he will likely visit soon. Probably a LSU guy but no room. Still no offer, and with things going so well with Ossai and Carson, Williams may go without an offer. A pretty good prospect but it seems like he may be a victim of big time programs running out of room for him.
- Caleb Okechekwu - A 3 star DE out of DC. No offer but a guy we have reached out to. He is very interested but will likely only be offered if guys higher on our board go elsewhere.
- Tyree Wilson - A 3 star and current TAMU commit. Again, we haven't offered and probably only do if needed. He is a strong Arkansas lean at this point.

LB: Two signed in Byron Hobbs as OLB and Adeoye at ILB.
- Nik Bonitto - OU commit
- DaShaun White - OU commit
- Merlin Robertson - a 4 star OLB from Cali. We have been in contact, apparently there are some grade concerns here and that is likely why some other big program have cooled on him. If we have scholarship room, it doesn't hurt to take a flyer on him just in case.

DBs: Done here with our incredible haul of 6 top DBs.

All in all I think we add:
1 Slot
1-2 OL
1 DT
2-3 DEs
0-1 LBs

To finish with a class between 26-29 signees. Herman has said we have up to 31 schollies but that he didn't see a need to try to fill them all.

Let me know if I missed anyone.

It's a guess but I feel pretty confident we can put Carson in the calculator.
I think you are right. Carson now has the hook em emoji in his twitter bio. After the visit Carrington sent some cryptic tweets and lots of CB action in our favor. Plus, Nebraska has 3 DEs committed already.

I'd like to get one or both of these guys even if we do land both Carson and Ossai. They're both ballers.

DE: None signed - Things have been active here.

I'm curious what the staff does here. Not sure how many they want. I wouldn't be shocked if we take 3. Ossai and Carson would be great, and the 3rd is very much up in the air. Vernon Jackson would be my pick but not sure what our chances are there. Williams or Okechekwu would be good gets as well.

Ossai could be considered our B LB. I'd take them all personally. Williams seems to be a jumbo athlete like Vernon. Caleb's more of a SDE like Carson.

Justin Wells - Recruiting Roundup - 1/17/18 (new coach, new offer, new day)

Hand, Grad Transfer OL, Carson, OVs this weekend, Caleb O, Williams, V-Jack. The works.

Texas announced the hiring of new Co-OC and OL coach Herb Hand today. That makes 10 full-time coaches, until they decide how to handle Derek Warehime. I don’t think he’ll be let go, rather reassigned. To what specific position still remains. We know Herman still needs a play-caller not named Herman. They also aren't ready to pull recruiting assistant Bryan Carrington off the road yet.

Until Hand dots the i’s and crosses the t’s, Texas is full within its scope to have Carrington remain on the trail. That's a really good thing. More on that in a minute.

What about the grad transfer offensive linemen? At this moment, Texas looks good for both.

Rice's Calvin Anderson is enjoying getting re-recruited, and Stanford's Casey Tucker is being thorough, because that’s what Stanford men do. Anderson is supposed to see OU and TCU soon. And Tucker left Austin with a smile on his face, I'm told. I don't think there's a timeline for either here. But it’s safe to say UT leads for both heading down the stretch.

As I reported yesterday, Carrington and coach Giles were in Missouri to visit Daniel Carson. Texas would likely take Carson over Caleb Okechukwu, but still want to see Caleb on campus this weekend. With Nebraska landing Winged Beaver DE Casey Rogers (Avon, CT) last night, that’s another sign the Longhorns look good here. UT started this relationship with Carson last Spring, and hosted him on an OV in September. Sending in Dr. Carrington was just what the pharmacist ordered.

As for Vernon Jackson, I feel as though the Horns would take one of V-Jack or Mike Williams, who is scheduled to take his official in Austin this weekend. He was offered this morning. Both are very similar in most regards; Jackson is slightly larger and more athletic, whereas Williams might be a little meaner and stronger. Both having played QB for their respective teams, they both display the versatility you love in a high school prospect. Tommy Blake-ish. Jackson has OVs set for Alabama and A&M remaining, with TCU still interested. I'm told the Jackson recruitment might go down to the wire.

Texas is set to host Okechukwu, Williams, and Josh Moore this weekend. $#@!er the Kicker will be in attendance as well. The first two will be case studies. Moore is the easy one. If UT really wants the 6-foot-1 string bean athlete from Yoakum, they can get him. They envision Moore as an outside and slot receiver. They'd take both if Jaylen Waddle decides Austin his future home.

UT is still hosting Moro Ojomo in two weeks, I believe. No matter how they finish 2018, I'd take Ojomo. He's got too much upside to disregard. It took too long to get on him in the first place.

In conclusion, Hand is in, the grad transfers are looking salty, Carson and Texas are beginning to look like a couple, take one of V-Jack or Williams (both if you can, but I don't think that's likely), Texas might still get a slot named Moore, and keep pushing for Ojomo.

Also, I really like Joseph Ossai. And trust the Herman, he has a plan.

P.S. If you go to St. Thomas Aquinas HS in Florida and didn't get a Texas offer yesterday, go back to the gym.

CBs starting to roll in for Mike Williams and Daniel Carson.

Texas is hitting the road hard again on Wednesday.

The Longhorns will see two of their biggest remaining targets in Katy defensive lineman Moro Ojomo and McDonogh 35 (La.) wide receiver Lawrence Keys III.

The Keys visit is both surprising and important. We were told last week that Keys and his family would not be taking Texas into consideration. However, things have changed over the last few days.

Texas is slated to make an in-home visit tonight and could do enough to get him and his family on campus for an official visit. Keys has an open date on Jan. 26 — he is visiting Notre Dame this weekend and SMU on Feb. 2.

Right now, Notre Dame is pegged as the frontrunner in his recruitment. But the four-star prospect is waiting until National Signing Day to announce, which gives the Longhorns plenty of time to make up ground.

Keys made an unofficial visit to Texas way back in the spring, so there is a relationship there. The Longhorns simply need to strengthen it. Keys would fill a major void at slot receiver if Texas is able to work a little magic.

While Texas is trending for both Daniel Carson and Michael Williams, the Longhorns aren’t done hunting for defensive linemen.

Texas is also scheduled to see Ojomo tonight. Texas A&M seems to have the edge here, but Texas is very much a player with Ojomo and will host him for an official visit before the end of the cycle.

Bryan Carrington and Oscar Giles did a hell of a job with Carson last night. It will be interesting to see what they can do with Ojomo tonight.

Overall, Texas has work to do with both prospects. But it’s clear Tom Herman and his staff work well in crunch time.

— The Carrington effect is real. Both Bryan Carrington and Drew Mehringer made their way to Louisiana today to see four-star wide receiver Lawrence Keys III. As of last week, Keys was not considering the Longhorns, but the tide has turned. Not only is Texas a major player here, the Longhorns are also likely to host him for a visit next weekend. I spoke to our Notre Dame writer Tom Loy, who said numbers are getting tight in South Bend and the Irish will push him to commit this weekend. If he doesn’t, Texas will have a legitimate shot to move into the pole position. Carrington is playing a big role here.

— The recruitment of Katy defensive lineman Moro Ojomo has taken a weird turn as he has set up an official visit to Oregon for the final weekend of the cycle. That means Ojomo would have to make a midweek to Texas or Texas A&M as he is set to see Notre Dame this weekend. From what we have been able to gather, Oklahoma has surged in his recruitment and might now be the frontrunner. When it comes to in-state schools, I would actually give UT the slight edge over A&M.

— I have confirmed that Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando did stop by to see four-star Junipero Serra (Calif.) outside linebacker Merlin Robertson during his time in California yesterday. Robertson and the staff are still getting to know each other, but an offer is a definite possibility. Robertson has two official visits remaining, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make his way to Austin.

— Orlando was back in the Lone Star State today and made his way to DFW, where he saw a pair of 2019 outside linebacker targets in Marcel Brooks and NaNa Osafo-Mensah. Texas still has some work to do early on as Brooks is high on schools like Alabama, Ohio State and Oklahoma and Osafo-Mensah is favoring LSU, Notre Dame and Texas A&M. But there is plenty of time to go in their recruitments.
