Recruiting Thread 2018

This coming up weekend seems to be a relatively slow one for Texas football but as might be expected, the spring game (4/15) will bring a bevy of recruits into town. QB target and OU commit Cam Rising will be in town as well as frequent visitor and 4 star WR Al'Vonte Woodard. This will be Woodard's 4th visit in 2 months making me believe we are the strong favorites in his recruitment.

The big coup however will be the presence of the Fast 7v7 team. This 7 on 7 team is stocked with talented Texas targets and it sounds like most, if not all, of them plan to visit together during the spring game. The team is led by top uncommitted Texas QB target Casey Thompson who appears to be a Texas-UNC battle. His receiving targets include 4 star WRs Joshua Moore, Brennan Eagles, Jaylen Waddle and 2019 Jordan Whittington. On defense they are led by Jalen Green, Jordan Moore, Leon O'Neal Jr, and D'Shawn Jamison. RB target Tazshawn Henry is also on the team. Getting this squad on campus together is a huge get.

I would be very surprised (and a little concerned) if Texas does not pick up a few commits by the end of the spring game weekend. Tweets like the one below make me feel even more confident that some good news is on the way.

I read somewhere that this staff was betting on themselves. They are recruiting like they know they are going to win, so there will be no panic, signings for signings sake. That gives me a great feeling about them. If they are willing to risk careers by going slow and certain because they have confidence in themselves, then I applaud that. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance so I hope, hope, hope we end up on the right side of that.

Agreed. I think we saw a good bit of that this past season with Strong's recruiting. He went after the big dogs, knowing that if he won we would take a big haul. That didn't happen and Herman was left to scavenge at the end.

If you look at the recruiting list I have compiled on page 1 of this thread (which I'll repost with updates after the spring game) you can see that Herman is going after the big dogs. Certainly not settling for any second tier recruits at this point. I'm just hoping for a few big time players to jump on board early so they can keep the heat on the other guys we want. We are all tired of saying it, but winning will cure all.

What do we know about the TE that is playing his final year at UT? I don't remember the name but saw it posted on Twitter.

Kendall Moore is the grad transfer from Syracuse. This past season the team ran a version of the veer and shoot that doesn't target TEs very often in the passing game. He had 1 catch for 15 yds. Looks like he was used a bit more often in the passing game in previous seasons. Looks to be a suitable run blocker and runs the TE routes well enough and can catch. He isn't a huge get but a very important one in terms of depth. I imagine we see a lot of him and Beck this season while Aucoin and Brewer have a year of development. TE will be an important position in recruiting this year given our thin roster at the position. Losing Reese Leitao due to drug charges didn't help either.

Big time visitor yesterday. Getting a 5 star top 10 player on campus is always great. It's his 3rd visit this spring. I think we are in a strong position.

Cook visited this week bc he won't be at the spring game next week. He'll be at Ohio State for their spring game. He's going to take all his visits. Meyer has been on a hot streak pulling out elite talent from tx. Could be a hard battle between us and OSU for Cook's services.

Certainly will be a battle for all our top targets. I love to see how important visiting Texas was to Cook though, making the visit this weekend since he won't be here next weekend.

For all you guys who are panicking about recruiting, DON'T. From talking to some kids, they are looking to see what the team do during the season. Some kids do think Herman can't win at UT but they still going to wait and see. If we do come out and perform well, we will see kids committed. The bad thing we are going to see is OSU, LSU and OU picking the hell out of Texas(more than we've seen before). So IF Herman wins, we will be good.
One interesting thing from a couple of kids. Schools are throwing a lot of shade at UT. Saying that Herman a high school coach, UT can't put a player in the league, why go to UT to lose and last, you will be a 3* player at UT.
Just win and we'll be alright.

Good list. I am sure it will continue to change with additions and subtractions as we go along. One addition for now, 4 star WR Miles Battle.

Good news as we go into this major recruiting weekend. Having a QB in the fold will really help with the efforts this weekend. Having a QB who plays 7 on 7 with some major targets will also help.

As a player, we get a dual threat QB cut in the mold that Herman really prefers for his offense. Ideally Shane or Sam take the QB spot by the horns and Thompson has the benefit of a redshirt year. If neither QB can make it happen, Thompson will come in and compete for the spot next year.

Post Spring Game Recruiting Big Board Update
Since Junior day, we landed two more recruits in Byron Hobbs and Casey Thompson. A handful of new offers have gone out and a few targets have committed, though not really anyone at the top of our list. I'll be keeping this updated so you can always come back to this post for up to date info. I'll probably post an update after the Spring Evaluation period (May 31st).

Committed players are highlighted in burnt orange if for the good guys and red if committed elsewhere. Looking at the offered players + who visited will give a good idea of the legitimate targets at this time. Feel free to offer up any edits.

An interesting prospect from the panhandle. Plays TE/DE at 6'6" 265 pounds but is being recruited primarily at OT. As expected he is a good blocking TE and has enough speed/agility to allow him to be a successful pass catcher as well. Given his frame, it won't take much for him to put on another 30 lbs or so and still maintain his mobility.

Become familiar with the guys in this picture. Texas is favored in all of their recruitments at this time. With some insiders giving 90+% chances for some of the guys including D'shawn Jamison, Alvonte Woodard, Jalen Green and BJ Foster. We lead for the others in the photo - Jaqualyn Crawford, Leon O'Neal and Keondre Coburn. Not pictured is Brennan Eagles who is also a strong Texas lean and Jaylen Waddle who is considered to be at about an 85% Texas lean.

Max Wright was also in town and had a good time. He has been considered an ATM lean but Texas has recently picked up some momentum. Wright will likely commit over the summer but depending on how the seasons play out for Texas and ATM I could see him going with the team who is more successful.

@Bwilk55 you post on TFB?

Also love that pic of the recruits with Herman. If we could get all those guys in that picture someone would have to pinch me. That's a lot of talent!

Yep, not as much as here. I basically go there for free insider info. What's your username over there?

Tom Herman’s staff was able to put together a successful recruiting weekend for the second time this spring. After operating a top-notch junior day in February, many of those same prospects returned to Austin for the Texas spring game. In speaking with a number of people present at the game it’s clear there was a strong buzz emanating once again. We’ve followed up with plenty of recruits following the game, but we also spoke with coaches and parents.

Houston Lamar recruiting coordinator and defensive back coach Theadis Reagins is becoming a familiar face in Austin. The Lamar secondary is loaded with talent, and Reagins also enjoys getting back to Austin to see his former players. Reagins gave us his take of the game both on and off the field. “I thought the first defense played well,” he said. “Being a defensive coach and rooting for my guyHolton HillI might be a little biased, but it was a great atmosphere with glimpses of a team that can make some noise this fall.” Reagins also had high marks for the recruiting effort on the visit. “The kids loved it,” he said. “The staff is really energetic and engaging.”

The highlight of the visit for many prospects on hand were the locker room updates, and specifically the new lockers the staff revealed. “I think there were some elite guys who enjoyed the new lockers more than most,” Reagins said. “All of the kids are really excited about the direction of the entire program.”

We also spoke with the parents of new Texas commitByron Hobbs. Hobbs brought the entire family down to Austin to with him, and his mother had nothing but glowing reviews afterwards. “It gave us a chance to watch the defensive schemes and evaluate how Byron would be used,” his father said. “We hope to catch a replay on the Longhorn Network to be able to really break it down with Byron. The environment was great. Being around the other parents we might spend the next 3-5 years with was awesome. Connecting with alumni and seeing the fan support was amazing.”

Byron’s mother has been one of the more outspoken parents on Twitter. She was also open to sharing her thoughts with us. “It was hot, but it was fun,” she said. “I really enjoyed meeting other parents. We had some great conversations and hopefully started some new relationships. I felt at home being in the stadium, and I’m ready to see them play this season.” Hobbs’ mother added that they didn’t get a chance to see much of the new upgrades since they were late getting to campus. “We got there a little late, so we didn’t get the chance to see the lockers in person,” she said. “I got a sneak peak of the unfinished product on the last visit. I’m all about the glitter, so I loved the lockers.”

It’s safe to say that Texas might have added a couple of ace recruiters in the form of Hobbs’ parents. (Roach)

Texas picked up one of its most important pieces to the puzzle last week. Four-star Southmoore (Okla.) quarterbackCasey Thompsongave the Longhorns a verbal commitment last Friday over offers from Miami, North Carolina, Tennessee and others. So what exactly is Texas getting in Thompson? His high school head coach, Jeremy Stark, broke it down. “Casey is one of the hardest working kids I’ve been around,” Stark said. “He’s not your typical player as far as knowledge of the game goes. He grew up around it and studies the game. He’s an avid film watcher. He knows the ins and out. Off the field, he’s a 4.0 student. He’s a great kid to be around.”

While Thompson has received endless praise for his high football IQ, Stark gave his quarterback glowing reviews for his on-field ability. “The IQ goes into some of that, but he’s very elusive when he runs the football,” Stark said. “Throwing the football, he has a strong arm. That’s underrated sometimes — his arm and his accuracy. He puts balls where only his guy can catch it.” When asked to compare Thompson to a college quarterback, Stark picked one of the best in the country. “MaybeDeshaun Watson,” Stark said. “He runs the ball well and throw the ball well. We do a lot of the read game. As a defensive guy, I’ve always hated guys that can run. He can run and throw, and it’s tough to defend all of that.”

At 6-foot-1, 184 pounds, Thompson is ranked as the No. 7 dual-threat quarterback in the country and No. 4 overall prospect in the state of Oklahoma, according to 247Sports Composite. (Holland)

Casey Thompson looks great in highlight reels, but don't they all? Even in those, he doesn't always make the right decision, though. He pulls it down and runs sometimes, even with an open receiver. He always carries the ball in his right arm -- never moves it over when running to the left. There are times when he should take the sack, but he throws it under severe pressure (and, of course, gets lucky or it wouldn't be in the reel). All correctable.
