Recruiting Thread 2018

Casey Thompson looks great in highlight reels, but don't they all? He doesn't always make the right decision. He pulls it down and runs sometimes, even with an open receiver. (Maybe from his angle the throw looked more dangerous?) He always carries the ball in his right arm -- never moves it over when running to the left. There are times when he should take the sack, but he throws it under severe pressure (and, of course, gets lucky or it wouldn't be in the reel). All correctable.

I am sure our coaches have seen complete game film on Casey but I wish more of that was available. You are exactly right about the highlight reels, they give a very biased picture.

Ummmm... thats why they call them highlights? Maybe schools should ask for three sets of film. Highlights, lowlights, and the stuff in the middle.

Obviously. What schools ask for is full game film. I was just saying that I wish we had access to some complete games as well.

Right, or all the passing downs would be helpful. Plus, since he's dual threat, a separate film with all the running downs.

Per TFB:
Transfer QB | Kyle Bolin: Texas is still in talks with a possible graduate transfer quarterback. Lousiville graduate transfer QB, Kyle Bolin tells me, “I talked on the phone with coach Beck and he told me the situation they have at UT and that he would keep in touch with me and hopefully get me down for a visit sometime in May”.

I know a lot of folks were impressed by Buechele and I spoke to someone on the Texas side who tells me that the staff really liked what they saw from him towards the end of the spring. But as everyone knows Herman is all about competition and bringing in an older, bigger quarterback could prove to be critical in a conference where you’ve got to score a lot of points. – (Super K)

Staff On The Road: Expect to see the Texas staff on the road today as the Spring evaluation period began on Monday and some high schools in Texas are starting Spring practice. Usually the coaches head to their specific region first, and then to see specific targets. They can see each recruit twice during this period but they aren’t technically allowed to speak with the recruit but there is a “bump rule” where the coach can say hi if they happen to run into the recruit while at the school. – (Andrew)

Offensive Line Recruiting: Texas only has three commits, but most positions in the 2018 class have a pretty clear picture on who the top targets are. One position that doesn’t have as clear of a picture at the moment is the offensive line. I was told Texas plans to take three OL in the 2018 class.

It looks like the top targets at the moment are Wakeland (TX) OT Rafiti Ghirmai, Seminole (TX) OT Reese Moore, and East (UT) OG Sione Angilau Jr. All three of those guys visited Texas over the weekend as well. One guy that I don’t think is a take for Texas in Allen (TX) OT Trey Stratford. Another guy that I was told the Texas staff isn’t very high on at all is FB Marshall (TX) OG Barton Clement. It’s interesting because most felt Clement was a Texas-Texas A&M battle but it sounds like TAMU is only planning to take their two current OL commits and nobody else, and with Texas not very interested we will see what happens with his recruitment down the line. Obviously things can change but that’s how things are looking as of right now.

Someone I will continue to keep my eye on down the line in terms of Texas offering is Katy (TX) OT Connor Galvin. He’s 6’6 and only around 260 pounds right now but you can tell he’s got the clear OT upside. Texas also recently offered East Ascension (LA) OT Cameron Wire but I don’t have a real feel on his recruitment just yet. – (Andrew)

Another Offensive Line Name: Just to add to one Andrew said, another guy to keep an eye is Owen Condon (OKC). Condon recently visited Texas. He holds offers from schools like Georgia, Arkansas and TCU. He’s a guy coach Warehime has been in touch with for quite some time. – (Super K)

Horns 247 Chat from yesterday:

I likely missed this in the past, but what is the deal with that OT Darrell Simpson? I haven't heard anything in regards to him. Does the staff simply not like him? Seems to have great size too.

I don't believe the staff likes him. He's a giant human but there are some questions I've had about his play that make me understand why everyone isn't in love with him.

If you had to pick 3 recruits this cycle who are must gets for the horns, who would you take?
Anthony Cook | Ron Tatum | Al'Vonte Woodard | Rafiti Ghirmai might be a close 4 due to the need and lack of bodies in the state at his position.

Who are 5 recruits you're close to changing your CB on (good or bad)?

Just changed mine on Barton Clement. I'm close to changing mine on Malcolm Epps to Texas. On the bad side I'm getting close to switching Keaontay Ingram to Ohio State.

How many more commits before June 1? Will any of them be what you consider a "big-time" get?

Decision timelines aren't really set in stone but it wouldn't totally surprise me to see Texas land a couple of guys before June 1. If they are the names we've been hearing behind the scenes I think you guys will be very happy.

Sleepers that are going to blow up with offers during spring evals?

I might go down with this ship but I believe in the talent of Rockwall Heath DB Tanner McAllister. I think when teams see him up close he will begin to pickup offers. Offensively I'd say TE Nic McTear out of Frisco Heritage

I've heard our biggest competition for Keaontay Ingram is Ohio State. Is this true, considering they already have two backs committed?
It's absolutely true. I was talking to a rock-solid Carthage source yesterday and we were told Texas is slipping there. Meanwhile, Urban Meyer is personally driving the recruitment for Ohio State. As for their two committed guys, one might be a slot.

What's going on with Barton Clement? I see Mike predicted him to Texas but he hasn't visited campus in a while and we don't seem to be actively going after him. Neither is A&M, his crystal ball leader? Has his stock dropped?
I'm not sure what he's up to. He's always been a quiet kid who prefers to stay out of the limelight. My CB pick was based on the fact that A&M doesn't appear to be taking any linemen at this time, and I believe Texas is willing to take Clement.

Any new news causing the flood of CB's for Jalen Green and Barton Clement or just a coincidence?
I mentioned Clement above, but I've felt good on Green for a while. Texas has done a great job, and some other schools have made mistakes with him.

Is everything still proceeding as planned in BJ Foster's recruitment? Assuming we do get Foster how big an impact will that have on other guys instate?
Texas is in a very good spot there. I'm not sure how much Foster will influence others. He's got a few friends in the Houston core group he's tight with, but he's not a guy like Leon O'Neal who talks to everyone. More than anything I think it will show that elite players are going to Texas which could generate momentum.

Here's a question for the staff or anyone that wants to answer. A caller called in to the Paul Finbaum show and gave a statement regarding the Texas A&M recruiting. The caller said A&M is focusing on Texas recruiting too much and that is the reason they are struggling with the SEC. He felt Texas players aren't built the SEC and They should expand to OOS recruiting more so than focusing on Texas. Do yall agree?
I think most schools in Texas could do more OOS recruiting, but it's a very hard thing to do if you're not winning at a high level. As far as Texas players not being built for the SEC, I'm not sure about that. A fair share of them went to SEC programs like LSU, Alabama and Ole Miss over the past few years.

With the change with the recruitment of Trey Stafford, who are our other OL targets? What positions does each recruit have the ability to come in and play?

I believe Clement to be a target for the interior. Right now I think Texas would like to take 3-4 guys, and JUCO could be in the cards with the need to find game-ready tackles. The problem is most of their board isn't ready to play early.

What is your preferred OL recruiting haul?

Rafiti Ghirmai is a guard/tackle combo who will need to add weight. Reese Moore is a tight end converting to tackle who will need to add weight. Cam Wire is a bit of a project who will need to add weight. He's really raw too. Barton Clement is a guard or center, and he's probably the guy best suited to play early.

Anybody you think Texas fans might feel confident in landing that has a good chance of going elsewhere?
Eagles, O'Neal and Ingram. Not sure I have a great read on who most fans feel confident in.

If you had to pick 3 recruits this cycle who are must gets for the horns, who would you take?
Leon O'Neal, Anthony Cook, BJ Foster

Why does E.J. give non-answers to our questions?

Any clue (as of this moment) as too which way Malcolm Epps is leaning?
I would say 50/50 A&M and UT

Now that we have Casey Thompson on board is there any chance we offer his teammate Brey Walker and if so do you think we have a chance.
I don't think there is any chance there, so probably not.

Any news on Anthony Cook and his recruitment? For awhile there it seemed like Texas was in a good position to get him, but now it sounds like OSU is leading for his services.
On Cook: Texas was able to get him on campus last weekend before he went to Colombus. This one will go deep into the year, and if Texas has a successful season they will be in the mix.

EJ/Mike I know every kid is different but on average how early do most of these kids have there mind made up prior to their announcement/how early do you guys typically find out?
As you said it really differs. I think some guys have an idea in mind early. Most guys make a true decision within a couple of weeks of announcing. I say true decision because I believe in most cases these silent commits can change as time goes on. With Casey, for example, I found out a week before that he made it official.

Is the staff passing on Bralen Taylor? He's obviously big on Texas by checking his Twitter page alone and 6'7" TE doesn't seem to be a huge turnoff imo. Do they see him as a last resort if Epps/Mustapha go elsewhere? Passing 100% regardless?
At this time it appears so. Taylor is an intriguing athlete, but he's got a long way to go as a Tight End. They will evaluate him this spring, but I think they like Nic McTear more.

Has UT whiffed on the more highly ranked OL guys? Their list of options isn't very impressive.
The talent pool just isn't deep this year. They missed on Hines, and they are still working on the others.

Do you think we offer Demetrious Flowers from Cali? And would he be on commit watch once/if he does?
It will depend on if Drayton likes what he sees when he goes to evaluate him. If offered I believe he would be on commit watch.

The fighting Khakis landed a couple CB's from Desoto. We had offered one and would probably offer the other one after more film from his senior season.

Per 247:

At this time last year, Reese Moore did not envision himself playing for Texas.

But what a difference a year makes. The three-star offensive lineman out of Seminole pulled the trigger and gave the Longhorns a verbal pledge on Sunday afternoon.

“Every time I had gone up there, the atmosphere just didn’t feel right with Coach (Charlie Strong),” Moore said. “I just wasn’t feeling good about it all. Texas wasn’t even in my Top 5. But the new staff invited me in, and I decided to give them a chance.

“As soon as I went there, we hit it off . Coach (Tom) Herman is amazing. Now, the atmosphere is crazy. I felt at home. I feel like I was called to play there.”

Moore committed to Texas over offers from Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech and a handful of others.

The intriguing West Texas prospect visited Texas for the annual spring game last weekend, where he met with Herman and offensive line coach Derek Warehime, who also visited him at school on Friday.

Warehime had a major impact in Moore’s recruitment and made him a top priority this offseason.

“I really like Coach Warehime a lot,” Moore said. “We have a great relationship. It’s easy to talk and communicate with him. I respect him. I would feel comfortable if he gets in my face and yells at me. I could see myself doing whatever he needs me to do.”

Moore added that he can’t wait to be a part of the revolution at Texas and is excited about the program’s future.

“I think it’s going to be restored to what Texas football used to be,” Moore said. “I think Texas is going to start winning a lot of games.”

Moore is ranked as the No. 30 offensive tackle in the country and No. 54 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Texas now has five commits in its 2018 class.

I was the biggest Strong supporter there was, bc I liked how he carried himself and cleaned up our program. He just didn't get it done on the field. But this is the first time I heard anything negative about how Strong was turning off recruits.... interesting. Trust in the Herman

Per Holland @ 247:

If you win Houston this year, you win Texas. The bulk of top tier talent in the Lone Star State this year resides in H-Town, which bodes well for Tom Herman and staff. They had success at UH and developed a ton of relationships in the area. While the Longhorns don’t have a commitment from Houstonjust yet, Herman is laying the foundation for what could be a special class. I spent a couple of days in Houston with some of UT’s top targets.

My first stop was at Houston Lamar, which produces big-time talent year in and year out. When I walked into the gym, the first person I saw was actually D’shawn Jamison. The four-star prospect was rocking Texas wristbands from his spring game visit and a Longhorns backpack. Jamison has quickly evolved from a quiet kid to a guy that could be a leader for UT this cycle. He wasn’t shy about publicly naming Texas his leader and added that Herman is starting a revolution.

While TCU remains a threat, Texas has taken charge in that recruitment. According to a source close to Jamison, it would be surprising if the pick isn’t UT in the near future. The same goes for teammate and four-star wide receiver Al’vonte Woodard. Texas A&M has really taken a dip in his recruitment. He wants to see Ohio State and Ole Miss this summer, but it’s basically a forgone conclusion that Woodard lands at UT.

So what about five-star cornerback Anthony Cook? That recruitment is trickier. If I had to pick a school for Cook right now, it would be Ohio State. He loved his visit, trained with Jeffrey Okudah last year and is impressed with the Ohio State defensive backs going in the NFL Draft this year. But Texas is still very much in the mix. If the Longhorns do land Jamison and Woodard and win eight or nine games, Texas could very well be the pick. He will make his decision at the Army All-American Bowl in January.

My next stop was at Houston Heights, where I met with four-star cornerback Jalen Green. From talking to him and those around him, I now feel fully confident that Texas has a big lead in his recruitment. According to a source, TCU might actually be the biggest threat right now. Schools like Alabama, Oregon, Penn State and LSU are still on contact, but Texas is making the biggest push, and Herman is winning him over. I also stopped by ProFit Houston, where I got to spend even more time with Green and those around him. This isn’t really recruiting related, but it’s worth noting that Green is a great kid that enjoys doing community service in his spare time and would be an ambassador for the UT program.

My last stop was at Katy Taylor to meet with one of my favorite recruits in the class, four-star defensive end Max Wright. While he has been pegged a Texas A&M lean, I have always maintained that Wright has an affinity for UT, and he made it clear that the two schools are currently his co-leaders. Like with Cook, Wright’s recruitment is very much going to depend on what happens this season. If the Longhorns can have success on the field, they could pry Wright away from the Aggies, especially ifKevin Sumlinhas a rough year.

Quick Hitters

— From what I was able to gather from various sources, Herman has continued to impress coaches, trainers, recruits and parents with his energy, charisma and vision for the program.

— I spoke to a source that works on the 7v7 circuit, and he said he is not a big believer in Casey Thompson’s potential. The source added that he would more of a depth guy for the Longhorns.

— Herman is not putting off Texas high school coaches by going out-of-state to recruit like Charlie Strongdid. I know it’s somewhat of a double standard, but Herman’s relationships are so strong around the state.

— Explosive Houston Lamar athlete Ta’Zhawn Henry is still optimistic that a Texas offer will eventually come his way. According to a source, Henry would be the biggest influencer of the Lamar crew and would get others to jump on board.

— The 'revolution' wristbands Texas handed out at its spring game were a hit with recruits. I saw a number of prospects wearing them during my two days in Houston.

Per 247:

— Texas will stop by Houston Lamar today to check in on five-star cornerback Anthony Cook, four-star cornerback D’shawn Jamison, four-star wide receiver Al’vonte Woodard and intriguing prospects Ta’Zhawn Henry and Joshua Landry.

— UT offensive coordinator Tim Beck is expected to be in Oklahoma on Tuesday to check in with quarterback commit Casey Thompson. I’m told that Oregon has been in contact with the four-star prospect and could be close to offering.

— Oklahoma isn’t giving up on Fort Worth Eastern Hills outside linebacker and UT commit Byron Hobbs. The Sooners will see him at school this week. Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando is slated to see Hobbs this week as well.

— I’m told Texas is still in a very good position for four-star Carthage running back Keaontay Ingram. But the team to watch in this race is Ohio State. The Buckeyes have made a surge in his recruitment, and he plans to visit soon.

Per TFB:

Ron Tatum: As you all know by now, talented defensive lineman, Ron Tatum (Putnam City, OK) will announce his decision tomorrow afternoon.

I’ll make this very simple and to the point. Our sources on the Oklahoma side feel confident that he picks the Sooners. Our sources on the Texas side feel confident he picks the Longhorns. The fact that it’s even up in the air is somewhat surprising to me. However, I will say that Tatum did tell me following his Texas trip back in February that the visit better than his other trips. That said, he never made a return trip to Texas.

If I were to guess, I’d have to guess OU just because it would be so out of the ordinary for so many top Oklahoma kids choosing out of state programs. But again, each side seems to feel good about where they stand. – (Super K)

Jaquayln Crawford: I’ve had a lot of people ask me about Jaquayln Crawford and where he’s being recruited and if he’s a take for Texas right now. Texas originally offered Crawford as a slot WR, but Michael Huff always has stayed in contact because he likes him at DB. Texas currently has one WR committed in East Ridge (FL) Justin Watkins who could end up in the slot. A lot of this will depend on Waddle. If Waddle commits then I don’t think Crawford is a take at WR. I have said multiple times that I can see elite talents like Waddle or Watkins played in the slot or on the outside, but I don’t think Texas takes three smaller WRs in 2018. They like Hou. Lamar WR Al’Vonte Woodard or Alief Taylor WR Brennan Eagles to go along with the smaller guys.

Crawford could still be a take at DB though, but I think Texas would like to see where recruits like Anthony Cook, Leon O’Neal Jr, BJ Foster, D’Shawn Jamison, and DeMarvion Overshown (who could be an OLB take) decide to go before taking Crawford. That could open up the door for TCU to land Crawford, as he has said he’d prefer to play WR in college but wouldn’t mind playing DB. – (Andrew)

Ayodele Adeoye: Texas extended an offer this morning to Saint Louis (MO) ILB Ayodele Adeoye this morning. He’s a guy that DC Todd Orlando has been in contact with for awhile now, and pulled the trigger this morning. He currently holds over 20 offers and from the likes of LSU, Oklahoma, Missouri, and others. I was told that he’s pretty wide open right now, and wants to take some visits but one school that could pull the upset with him is Illinois. He told people at the Under Armour camp up in St. Louis this weekend that he wants to visit Texas, Oklahoma, and LSU this summer.

RB coach Stan Drayton has connections to the St. Louis area, but it’s Todd Orlando who may have an inside track in this recruitment. As he coached Ayodele’s brother Adewale when he was the DC at Utah State. – (Andrew)

Great get!....now if we can show we can win some games it might get real fun around here.

The class is off to a great start. Small, but all very high quality. I think we get a handful more commitments even before the season from guys like Foster and Woodard who are trending so hard our direction. With a good season, we will close the class with commits from on the fence studs like Anthony Cook. A bad season and we will lose some steam and possibly some commits but I still think we end up with a solid, top 20, class.

If Herman keeps landing big time studs like this, there is no way this class ends up small. He isn't going to stop at 20 if he can still add difference makers.

Offer out to a Kicker

I wonder if this is a scholarship offer or a preferred walk-on. I have no problem giving schollies to kickers, I think that was one of CS big mistakes and probably cost him 3-4 wins over his time here. That said, this recruiting cycle, I am already worried that we don't have enough schollies for all the studs we could land, not sure I want a kicker taking one of those spots. Maybe attrition will be significant (some insiders have said between 7-10) and that will open up plenty of scholarship spots.

I'm not worried about recruiting over players. Happens all the time, all over CFB. Take as many studs as you can and then tell the bottom feeders on the roster you will help them find a new school to play at.

Per 247:
Texas is the team to beat for Keaontay Ingram.

The four-star running back out of Carthage named UT his leader this week and loves the atmosphere on the Forty Acres with the new regime.
“Texas is my leader as of right now,” Ingram said. “It’s just the chemistry. As soon as I got down there, the players greeted me. I haven’t been to too many places, but that really stuck out. I talked to some of the players about the coaches, and they bring high energy.

“The chemistry is related more to now, like our style and music. I talked to them about Coach (Tom) Herman and Coach (Stan) Drayton, and they really like those guys.”
Ingram visited for Texas on junior day in February and plans to make a return trip at some point this offseason.

Drayton, who has a history of recruiting stellar ball carriers, has impressed Ingram throughout the recruiting cycle and visited him at school last week.
“He keeps it real,” Ingram said. “When I went on my visit, as soon as I went in, he was hammering me with info. I was like ‘I’m really going to like this guy.’ This guy doesn’t lie to you. He told me we were going to bump heads. He’s going to keep it honest with you. I’m excited about him.”

Ingram added that he is a believer in Herman and the future of the Texas program.
“It’s progressively getting better each day, including with this class with all the commits,” Ingram said. “It’s going to be great.”
Along with Texas, Ingram is considering LSU, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M and others. He plans to make his decision this summer.
At 6-foot-1, 187 pounds, Ingram is ranked as the No. 10 running back in the country and No. 26 overall prospect in the state, according to 247Sports Composite.

Per IT:

To start this Q&A off we'll revisit a previous post of mine from February 7th, where I discussed the Battle of Houston between UT and A&M.

Here's how I saw some key battles shaping up then:

UT or OOS
CB Anthony Cook
CB D'Shawn Jamison
DB BJ Foster
WR Brennan Eagles

A&M or OOS
DL Max Wright
DL Keondre Coburn
DB Leon O'Neal
CB Jalen Green
WR Josh Moore (IMG)

Wildcards
WR Jalen Preston
WR Al'Vonte Woodard
TE Mustapha Muhammad
TE Malcolm Epps

My premise was right, but since then we've seen some significant movement. Here's how it looks after a couple of months being able to gather information. I'll also add a couple of names and some very brief notes.

UT or OOS
CB Anthony Cook - Ohio State or Texas. Long way to go.
CB Jalen Green - Texas did that rubber band roller derby move passed everyone.
DB D'shawn Jamison - TCU was a threat early, but the firecracker who hits like dynamite is all UT.
DB BJ Foster - Was concerned with Ohio State at the time; no more.
DT Keondre Coburn - UT was behind for a while but I always new it could gain ground quickly.
WR Brennan Eagles - A&M didn't pursue him hard, he has no interest in A&M. Probably related.
WR Jaylen Waddle - I'll add a segment on him beneath.
WR Al'vonte Woodard - A&M had the lead just a few months ago; no more.
TE Malcolm Epps - This is a bit of a battle, but UT leads, imo.
TE Mustapha Muhammad - Probably OOS at this time, simply because he's playing the long-game and I think Epps hops aboard before him.

A&M or OOS
WR Jalen Preston - Texas hasn't been on him; Aggie sites keep rating him #1. There's a reason for that.
WR Josh Moore (IMG) - Texas has set targets at the position.
DB Leon O'Neal - A genuine battle, O'Neal would pick A&M right now. Sumlin has done well here.
DL Max Wright - UT has made up significant ground, and it's close, but if he picked today I think it would be A&M.
DE Joseph Ossai - I saw him this week and he was clear A&M is still his dream school. Herman will have to win this by making Ossai fall in love with the school. I could see Ossai picking A&M regardless of Sumlin's fate. He's a flat-running stud, btw.

There's an overt push-pull in the group texts of these players, with some recruiting for A&M, and others for Texas.

It's still early, but UT has made up a ton of ground since my initial writing, largely thanks to the Junior Day Weekend.

JAYLEN WADDLE

Here's what we know:

- He was part of the group that was hinted at by another site was committing in the days after Texas Junior Day.
- He initially had FSU very high.
- He was bombarded by Tim Brewster this week. Brewster is quite the salesman and has a sell; "We let Justin Watkins go because we wanted you. Texas pursued him."
- There was some weird initial confusion on Waddle's part if he even had an offer. That's something on Waddle's side (but not with him) that I'm going to call odd and leave it there for now.
- FSU landed Marvin Wilson.

It's not time to worry, but FSU might make this interesting. I'll catch up with some people to investigate further.

Unbelievable! Herman putting everyone on notice. Better look out! He'll snatch your croots
