The biggest topic during Tuesday’s media availability with Texas football players was how to find success against TCU on Saturday. In the last three meetings, TCU has outscored Texas 129-26. TCU defeated Texas, 50-7, in Fort Worth two years ago.
Here are a few highlights from Tuesday’s media availability:
- Malik Jefferson on what he remembers about playing TCU on the road two years ago: “I remember the first quarter being 31-0 [actual score was 30-0]. It’s probably the worst game I’ve ever been involved in. Definitely one of the more frustrating [games] because there was nothing you could do but watch the guys catch the ball left and right. It was a blood bath.”
- Texas guard Patrick Vahe also has bad memories about that loss: "That was [the most] devastating blow I've had in my entire football career. That’s just one of the things I’m hoping will never happen again. That just takes practice.”
- In addition, Vahe said TCU’s players are very athletic: “One of the things they got that I have to put a lot of emphasis on is they’re shifty. No guy is average. Every guy is a player. I give them a lot of credit, but at the same time, we've got to do our job. We’ve got to emphasize the run game, pass game, whatever it is, and whatever coach (Tom) Herman wants us to go out there and execute.”
- Texas cornerback Holton Hill said the team is using the previous disappointments against TCU as motivation this season.
- Longhorn defensive end Charlie Omenihu said TCU runs the ball well and believes it is important for his unit to stop the ground game.
- Omenihu on TCU quarterback Kenny Hill: “Kenny Hill is a great quarterback. He put up great numbers this year. It’s going to be a big challenge. The guy is good, but we’re always ready for whatever comes to us. We’re just going to prepare, prepare hard, make sure we take away what he wants to do, and make it hard on him.”
- Texas receiver Dorian Leonard on the characteristics of TCU's defense: “When he [Gary Patterson] calls his plays, he’s very precise. He gets his guys in the right spot at the right time. I just give kudos to him and his staff and the players because he’s doing a really good job over there.”
