*****Texas vs Kansas Game Thread*****

This is Orlando’s defense at Texas. Wide open receivers running around. Easy pitch & catch. Tackle the receiver after they make the catch (sometimes), 2nd or 3rd person on defense usually makes the tackle.

Get’s no rush on the QB. No sacks. DL gets pushed around in the run game & their running back always has a great game.

Does Orlando put our guys in the best position to make the play? Does he scheme for the opponent or play the same defense every game?

ive been an Orlando apologist because he was very good year 1 and showed some flashes year 2. The inability to tackle, get pressure, stop the run, etc. is blatantly obvious. I struggle to understand what his defensive principles are. And it’s getting worse.

Are we really discussing replacing Herman? Unreal. Give the guy some time. The team has trended in a good direction during his time at the helm. Yes, there are some things that are perplexing, but he needs time to at least create a full body of work. There are very few teams, if any, in the entire nation that could lose as many DBs and LBs to injury as Texas, without it affecting their W/L record. We were thin at LB before the season started and lost our stud freshman with the spine thing and a key reserve early in the season. We knew going in that any injuries to our LBs would make it a very difficult season. Well, we had injuries at LB and yet we’re surprised at how much it’s affecting our defense. We felt good before the season started about our safeties, because we were so deep. Well, they’re pretty much all hurt or banged up, along with two of our best CB options. Add to that the fact that one of the safeties missing was a Freshman All-American. We have 2nd & 3rd string players on the field. This defense is decimated. Orlando is using duct tape and baling wire out there. At least allow the staff a chance to navigate a historic amount of injuries before you talk about canning them. If Vince gets hurt in ‘05, Mac never wins a title. Injuries are a part of the game, but they also cause different outcomes. Back in August, most of us figured this team would go 9-3 or 8-4. They might still get there. 10-4 last season looks great on paper, but we almost lost to Tulsa, Baylor, Tech, KSU. Those were all dog fights. We knew we’d take a step back on defense and probably have a slightly better offense. 5-2 at this point shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. Winning games with all of these injuries is going to be really difficult, but let get behind these guys and see what happens.

Is there another goddamned program in the land that has had our injury luck over the last decade?

I'm sure there is and I just don't know, since I only follow Texas closely, but we've been getting f*cking hammered almost every year since Colt went out in the MNC game. And it's never someone like GDDH that gets injured, of course -- the guys that suck apparently have adamantium in their bones and Kevlar in their joints. It's almost always some of our most talented and/or most critical players that are missing significant time.

Beyond tired of this sh*t.

LOL! So true. And it’s never spread out evenly across the roster instead certain position groups get obliterated.

This season at one point 6 of the top 7 RBs on the roster were out.

Now you’ve got almost the entire back 7 of the D hurt.

What’s your point?

I'm not trying to make a point!! You sound like a nagging wife that is hyper sensitive about everything. Just take my post for what it is based on it's plain and ordinary meaning.

Just adding to the discussion about our head coaching situation. Most on this board are like me and had no idea what Saban's record was after he took the Alabama job. Thanks to me, you don't have to look it up.

Feel free to make whatever point you want to make.

We, KU fans, were ready to replace Beaty after our 2nd game in 2017; I know that there is a difference between competing for the Big XII Championship Game vs just trying to win more than 4 games for the first time in almost a decade, but there is enough similarities.

I'm not piling on, but it is funny how you say that you have 2nd and 3rd string players on the field. We did too, with fewer available players. And many of ours are 2*/3* recruits that were overlooked.

I do understand the dynamic of not following another program much, so I can provide you with ours.

Just from the last 4 years under Beaty, we had at least 10 players who medically retired, and many others who experienced season ending injuries at the worst possible time. For example, in 2015, our starting QB, who was going to be a senior, tore his ACL, during the Spring Game, to a walkon player. That began a cycle of trying to find another QB, which we did, but by the 3rd game of the 2015 season, our backup, along with the new QB we got, because of the other injury, got season ending injuries. This happened at multiple positions for us.

Imagine all of this while trying to simply field a decent roster. After Beaty's initial spring, he had less than 40 legit scholarship players; he was passing out scholarships to walkon players like candy on Halloween.

Take a deep breath....

So, you just randomly posted those stats completely out of the blue?

No way in hell is Sam going to the draft this year. He is a Tim Tebow type of player. Great college quarterback but just doesn’t have the intangibles to play quarterback at the next level.

do you know what intangibles are??? or is that a word you're spitting out to try to fool people into thinking you know what you're talking about? tebow had and ehlinger has intangibles in spades. tebow didn't have the throwing ability-- that's completely tangible. remains to be seen if sam does-- i don't follow the nfl enough to know.

anyway, we won saturday. wisconsin lost to illinois. boise lost to byu. mizzou lost to vandy. we avoided the banana peel. gotta get better. a LOT better in some ways. but 5-2 is the best we could've been at the end of the day, and we are 5-2.

We all like Sam because he's a tough kid. We all admire his grit. He does have it in spades. But let's break down the tangibles. He can't make the deep out throw. He just can't. We all know it. His release time is loooong. Real long. You can teach a kid how to look off the coverage but you can't teach a kid how to get rid of the ball quicker because you'd have to change their natural throwing motion and that's REALLY hard to do. Dan Marino didn't learn how to get rid of the ball as quickly as he did---- God gave him that gift. Sure, Dan honed that skill and was able to refine it and perfect it, but he was given a diamond in the rough gift, and perfected his trade craft.

It's kind of like speed--- I can teach a kid how read defenses all day. I can teach a kid how to get bigger and stronger. I can teach a kid how to do ball fakes and look off safeties-- but I can't teach a kid how to be fast. I can't teach speed. If you've GOT it-- I can teach you how to get a little bit more-- but you gotta have it, first.

Sam won't ever be able to flick it like Vick could. Sam winds up like Gossage with no runners on base. This is one of the main reasons he won't play QB in the league.

Weevil, I get it. I’m not happy either. But Kansas was bad, maybe worse, last year and we only beat them by a touchdown. We were all still pretty happy with the 10-4 finish and Sugar Bowl win. Going into this year, we all knew there would be some close games. It would have been naive to believe that we’d lose our best LB, DT, DE and think we were going to blow everybody out, even with a healthy squad. Well, we are about as far as you can get from healthy. We are actually an injury or two away from literally not have a body at some positions. I’m giving the staff a bit of a pass this year on defense because of all the injuries. My biggest complaint is that we ALWAYS find a way to let the opponent off the mat. It happened time after time last year and again this year with WVU, OSU, and KU. Sam’s INT and Jake’s fumble made this game closer than it should have been. Those things can’t happen late in a game, especially with all the defensive struggles. All that said, I feel like a head coach deserves five years to turn things around, especially if they show promise early, which Herman has. Charlie never really gave people a reason to believe here. Herman has.

Actually, we are not as bad as you say. We could make an argument that we could be 4-3 or 5-2 right now. OU is OU. As for the TCU game, our leading rusher and team captain, Kahlil Herbert essentially peaced out at the team hotel before getting on the bus to the stadium. Our team was clearly distracted.

And how can you legitimately say that about KU, considering last year's game and Saturday night? Many of you absolutely overlooked us all last week. Even Herman said some snarky thing about us. But if you want to think that we are trash, continue feeling that way.

Herman’s comment was taken out of context. He was commenting on the fact that reporters were only asking him questions about the OU loss, instead the next opponent.

20-95 record this decade. Maybe Les will give you guys a few good years before he leaves for a better job.

still can’t believe the idiots that make decisions fired Mangino. Y’all were legit back then

I made my statement, because of the following article.Even now, I better see how it was taken a bit out of context, so yeah, I was wrong there. But it is kind of shady that none of the media members asked any questions about KU.

He and Jeff Long are not playing around, now. Us KU fans are ticked off that Dearmon was not the OF from the start. One of our "insiders" basically posted that Long got in the way of Miles hiring Dearmon as OC, because he wanted someone more high profile. All of us questioned of how much more high profile Les Koenning could really be over Dearmon. It is nice to see that others see exactly what us fans are thinking. Not lying, but we could legitimately be a 6+ win team this season, had Dearmon got the OC job in January. I firmly feel confident that we would have won the WVU and CC games.

As for Mangino, he had some of it coming his way, with some of his actions, but dang, we now look back at how much we miss those days, but under Miles, we just want some stability and solid recruiting/coaches put in place.

Well, we are also sh*t.

As for last year, funny stuff happens on the road.
As ridiculous as it sounds, here are a few positive moves Beaty made at KU.
  • Hiring Tony Hull: our Louisiana recruiting is off the charts, for what it should be. Some of these recruits replaced the lack of TX recruits we went after.
  • Hiring Zac Woodfin, our S&C coach: Some seriously good changes throughout the roster. Increased attention to nutrition and recovery.
  • Convincing donors for smaller facility improvements: our locker rooms are updated, and we now have a football only indoor facility; both very helpful
There are some others, but he got the roster to a better situation, with these moves. Long came in and is on record of simply building up the program. Our staff is at least 3x the size from 2018. And we are actually getting there. It also shows with our recruiting; I know that some of you may "overlook him," but be real; would you legitimately pass up on this recruit?

There is a reason why "The Jayhawks Are Coming" actually feels more real than fake; we are improving.

Ok, moving on from Kansas...we have TCU this week. Not sure what to expect. Who's injured. Who's not. What the mood of the team is, etc.

Tap the brakes a little bit. Wait till people get a little game film on the new OC.
This is very true, but Saturday was the first career game for our QB, Stanley, to not throw an INT or fumble the ball. And there is plenty of game film on Pooka, but hardly anyone has truly stopped him. We are more likely to have some more disappointing games, but at the moment, I choose to be hopefully positive.
