The Strong Era is all but over...

Everyone is to blame for the Texas Longhorns not being successful EXCEPT Charlie Strong.........Must be nice.

With the affirmative action going on right now at UT it wouldn't sit well if we just fired strong....
interesting point. But the University is trying to keep/ justify its system not get rid of it.

However, it is front page news.

Note to all: please don't derail this thread with the politics of the Supreme court case. There are other forums for that.

He deserves SOME blame, but when you walk in to the start of a dumpster fire and the fire gets worse around you its tough to be successful.

Imo the hiring of Patterson and the disaster that turned out to be is just as much to blame maybe even more so than Charlie for this mess

It appears the backlash has four men on an airplane headed to Tulsa in an attempt to rectify the situation and win over the heart of one Sterlin Gilbert.
Is this the part where Rasputin is wandering the halls of Bellmont while the menfolk are away? I've been to two World's Fairs and a goat ropin' and never seen anything like this.

So, it appears Gilbert will extend Charlie's stay.

We seem to have secured him. The question now becomes--- will it work?

Yes, we've apparently gotten a 3 year secured deal at around 900k per and he gets to bring his oline buddy with him for 600k. But please don't hold me to that. This is second hand Chow Chow and I've been drinking a tad.

Thanks for your work...I don't hold anyone to anything on a deal like this...even after the ink has dried...I might have to break out a jar of corn myself....I just want this program headed on the right track again and I know no one around here wants that more than you.

Doesn't matter who the HC is as this all get derailed with an AD and regents who did nothe want to spend the money to be great again. Number 1 in revenue but only number 6 in spending. There is your disconnect as you do need over the top facilities with the best staff to get the future NFL that wins national championships. Charlie's hands are tied. Will take a miracle and major major commitment to reverse all this as the rich now get richer.

Don't like it at all. Sure he may be fine at Texas and maybe so for the OL coach, too. They will also have better QBs and OL than wick and Norvell had though. Who's to say Norvell and Wick wouldn't have been just fine once they got better talent to work with? Looks like a knee jerk reaction being driven by a retarded, spoiled brat fan base to me.

Metcalf, bro, they are trying to fix the Watson mess. Some weird, crazy, Steve Patterson sh!t has happened and if you mix that with back to back losing seasons, we are left with a cake that won't rise. This is the hand we've been dealt. I know we can play the "what if" game until the cows come home, but that's counterproductive for everyone. We are where we are and we are left with two choices..... burn down the village or try and salvage it. You, I, all of us are in this village. We may not always agree on the best way to fix it, but I think you'd agree that it does need fixing. I want the best for this university, as I know you do. I don't know if this is the best option, but for the time being, it's the best that we have now. Make sense?

Seeing what we got, I think I know why Saban walked away seeing Patterson was way over his skis. Unfortunately for Charlie the money was just too good to say no and now he's in quick sand. I contend until you start matching Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon and the other Texas schools dollar for dollar the recruiting war will be lost. Good education and tradition means little to a 5 star recruit who wants to be groomed for the NFL. Out of control, yes, but that is the way it is.

I'll just put it to you this way. If Gilbert, Cumbie, Steve freakin Spurrier, or ANY other genius OC would've been employed at Texas this year, everybody would be calling for their head. We just had terrible QBs and the best two players on the OL were true freshmen ffs. No win situation for any coach especially around an irrational fan base.

The numerous 3 and outs were ugly and it is on the coaches, no matter how you dice it. By season's end, there should have been more improvement. I am not saying they should have looked like the Baylor offense, but, at the very least-improved.

So it has nothing to do with talent, or a severe lack of talent. So you, me, flour bluff, and Rex could've suited up and run out there, and if we sucked, it's the coaching. Ok whatever.

I know where you are coming from, Metcalf. But, you are being extreme to prove a point. Yes, you and I could have suited up, but, that isn't what happened. The coaches have the responsibility to use what they have at their disposal and failed. If that is truly your position, then you are at odds with Coach Strong himself. Coach Strong also doesn't believe Wickline/Norvell/Watson are the answer. Otherwise, he wouldn't be making the change. It is Strong's responsibility to run the ship, or else, it is ultimately his neck on the line.

Some people don't see that they are actually saying Strong is incompetent when they are trying to take up for him....lol

They will have their excuse no matter what the team does in the future. If the team does well they are covered and if it does poorly they are covered. I give my honest opinion and I hope my opinion is wrong about Strong and his coaching abilities.

Considering he won two big games versus very good opponents, the question now needs to be asked is he really pretty good making the most of a broken situation. The talent is just there both with players and coordinators yet he took down two formidable teams. Yes he lost to some very weak teams too, but the AD and regents should be coming to him now and saying what can we do to help, you got our backing and unlike Patterson, the check book will be WIDE open to make the needed prove men's as it's now an arms war. Might as well start now as if Charlie leaves, no other formable coach is going to come here without that commitment.

Sorry, auto correct on a cell phone, should read. ...the talent is just not there....the checkbook will be WIDE open to make the needed improvements...

Hopefully those three making the trip to Tulsa will show Sterlin how serious Texas about wanting to win and their choice of him to run the offense.

If Texas is this serious about an OC, why didn't they go after someone better? Gilbert has very little play calling experience. Why waste your one shot on him?

My question is aside from Charlie, are the powers above really serious about bringing great football back to Texas as the game has changed. It might mean going after players who have been exposed to some of society's ills and have different values, then to get those players showing every expence has been spent on preparation for the NFL draft where UT academics are a second focus. Just saying.

Because before we call any plays. We first need to install an offense worth a damn.

So they targeted guys that run an offense and have bright young minds.

You really don't have to use leading questions to try and slight Texas on a Texas website. You can go ahead and say what you want to say "tu sux and they will never get a good coach and can't even hire a top OC so that means they suck and my great ATM is better". Even that is merely a moral victory. Sad that you are relegated to that sort of thinking. Maybe you can win a trophy someday in your lifetime. Until then, enjoy trolling UT sites for perceived slights. You probably got giddy when you thought UT couldn't get Gilbert.

I dont mind the pick of Gilbert.....Im ready for someone who is hungry and will work hard to get us out of the darkness....except those two bright spots where we beat the Land Thieves and the Sic 'ems, we can stay there. That's always a treat...

Finally, someone else on here who understands.

I think under different circumstances strong would do fine here. In all honesty this place is such a mess right now I think only on of the big boys(Saban,Harbaugh, etc) would have any shot at being remotely successful. I think the administration will spend the next year getting things pointed the right way and if they do decide to fire strong after next season the program will be in better shape than when he walked in from a talent/management standpoint.

You talking about bringing in some straight up thugs? You bet. Gotta have some thug gin' to be successful no doubt.
