2016 Season Running Thread

Of course NFL players know what they are doing is dangerous. Anybody that claims they didn't know they could be damaging themselves because the NFL didn't give them science to prove it is either naive or lying. And they are naive or lying if they think there are a significant amout of players who would have chosen not to play if the NFL gave them the science. With that said, the information should have been given, to enable players to decide to leave the game earlier, like we are seeing more of now. Get your second contract, get your money, and then get out and let the next guy have his chance.

What does NFL didn't give them science mean?
its my understanding that certain ex players are claiming that the NFL had medical research concerning concussions that they suppressed and hid from players, thus the players were uninformed about how dangerous the game was.
I call BS. When I was five I thought it would be funny if I put on a baseball helmet and let by brother hit me in the helmet with a nurf bat. Guess, what, I knew quickly afterwords that was not good for me.

Perhaps your version of history differs from that of myself... but Benson sure as hell wasnt in our backfield in 2009..... as a matter of fact he hadnt been in our backfield for 6 or 7 years at that point.....for that matter was JC still here in 2009? The answer is NO.... how are you a Longhorn and not know when some MAJOR players were actually here?

I meant in the scheme of the offense...how he could use different types of backs and still get results.
You can't tell me we didn't continuously plug and play with GD's system.

This sounds a whole lot like, "hey, we don't necessarily need a good QB to win". Sure, we can probably win 8 games IF Gilbert can coach Swoopes up into a game manager. We run out of a two back set, with Swoopes as a third running option, and he passes just enough to keep an extra defender out of the box.
If thats where we are as a team, fine, but it is sad that we have settled for this and are even talking about it like its a good thing five months before the first game. Have we just completely given up on having a good QB at Texas? Have we given up on playing for anything meaningful in post season? And by the way, if we go this route, where are we next year? We'll have a redshirt freshman with no playing experience, and a true freshman, as our QB option.

Im just saying, everyone tries to make it seem like we are the only team that can't find "the" quarterback = not the case

Are you really comparing a few games Colt had as a frosh. Swoopes is a 4th year starter. And still can't complete a basic out pattern with any consistency.

I also don't remember anyone calling Colt "3 and out Colt".

What "good games" are we forgetting from Swoopes:
JR year
Loss to ND he was 7 for 22 for 93 yds
Win vs Rice (Heard took job) he was 1 for 3 for 8 yds
Loss vs TCU he was 5 for 8 for 74 yds
Loss vs ISU he was 6 for 13 for 59 yds
Win vs KU he was 6 for 7 for 98 yds and 1 TD
Loss vs TT he was 9 for 18 for 52 yds and 1 INT
BU he was 12 for 19 for 151 and 1 TD

What an amazing JR year. So full of not good games that we didn't have to forget the good ones. Tell me again how he compares to any of Colts seasons much less his JR year?????

I could go back and show this same story for his SO and FR years, but why bother? You should get the point.

I fully believe our O will be better on scheme alone. And yet if we start the above, we will lose plenty of games. I know its that time of year where hope reigns supreme, but just turn on the tape of any game and get a dose of reality. I really think he's a good kid and hope something amazing happens. I am just not going to expect it. That would be the definition of insanity.

Maybe I should have put in bold "BEFORE COLT'S JR YEAR" ..because it clearly in my post

No Im not comparing Colt to Swoops stats or win wise. Im just showing even one of our best QB's wasn't always the best and how players around him HELPED make him who he is as well.

What who said anything about "3 and out Colt" as a nick name..not being an ass but did you read my post???

I would never say Swoops won or Lost us a game with the way our TEAM has been playing? I could not

Wow like I said read the post and get back to me

Also I see you did address what my post was all about, how none of the teams listed have "the quarterback" they want. How did you miss that part?

How often do you judge the QB by how bad his defense is?
How much Cal did you watch??? Were you impressed with him in other games...I officially knew he was not what they claimed he was after 5 picks against Utah.
Im not the only calling this QB class weak..it the professionals..

27-37 (with a few drops..1 for a TD) for 268 yards and 3 TDs....Texas came back AFTER the Cal coaches went conservative and tried to kill the clock or it would have been a lot better. Yes he was impressive and well above average. He will go top 15 in the draft for sure.

Ehh not to be that guy but ive seen QB go 27-37 at many B12 schools and that didnt mean they lit up the other team. 27-37 doesn't impress me when I see its 5 here and YAC there. Not saying he's a scrub or terrible, just saying the same thing the scouts have been saying. He may be one of the best in this draft class but thats not saying much.

We did... but when you specifically name a year and 2 specific players it is easy to see how it looked like you were a tad off your rocker.... ;) no worries though

Honestly I think Forenan and Kirk Johnson will give us some flashes of Benson and Charles (fingers crossed)

well.....there is the answer to the question we have wondered about for a damned long time.

In an interview expected to air in its entirety on the Longhorn Network prior to Saturday’s Texas spring game at 1 p.m., Texas head coach Charlie Strong and 1998 Heisman winner Ricky Williams talked about the Longhorns’ quarterback situation in a short video released on Friday.

Senior Tyrone Swoopes is likely to be the first quarterback out with the No. 1 offense, but the conversation between Strong and Williams quickly turned to the true freshman in the mix. What Williams saw at practice this spring has him intrigued about the youngest guy in the room.

“When I was out there I saw Ty, he looked good,” Williams said. “But I have to be honest. The player who jumped out wasShane Buechele.”

Strong talked about what makes Buechele special. He said the fact that Buechele ran a similar offense in high school to the veer and shoot installed this spring at Texas by new coordinator Sterlin Gilbert and having the pedigree of a father, Steve Buechele, who played professional baseball and is still involved in the game are the things that have prepared Buechele to come in and compete right off the bat.

“He’s like a gym rat, like he really studies the game. It’s amazing,” Strong said. “You walk down that hall down there now he may be somewhere hanging out in the offense. He is a competitor.”

Furthermore, Strong said his players have commented all spring on how much Buechele has impressed them with the term “baller” being thrown around loosely. Those players include Swoopes, who told Strong Buechele is pushing him because he’s competitive and talented.

“When you’re sitting there getting that from a teammate of yours, someone you’re competing at the same position, then you know you’ve got something special,” Strong said.

Williams asked Strong if Buechele is the in hunt for significant playing time. Strong’s response sets the stage for what’s becoming a highly-anticipated spring game debut for the December high school graduate.

“Oh God yes,” Strong said. “He will play in the fall.

this came from an interview of Strong By R williams.

Imo Shane should be the
I think we found a QB boys!!! Booooooo
yeah I think he should be the stater. Swoops could get you to 6-6 Shane could get you to 8-9. Charlie needs to be bold and start him. If you start him this year and work out all the freshman lumps you are a contender in 2017

I don't need to see any more. Buechele should start, with Swoopes playing in relief to keep Shane healthy, and doing the 18-wheeler thing. The running game is awesome. OL looks good, D didn't impress much, but I don't think the personnel are set. They will be good by September. WRs will be better than they showed today, what with all the drops. Kickers looked terrible, will be a big problem if not fixed.

Shane just looks more polished and more accurate than Swoopes. Tyrone still can't hit an out route. 2nd team receivers couldn't catch a cold at a nudist resort in the artic. Running backs are special.

ok...my long awaited take on what went on.....

Shane....Lots to talk about. My biggest observation on him is the way he handled the offense. I dont mean the throws and runs....I liked the way he was grabbing guys and putting them in position before the snap!...A freshman?...my God!...He already has taken command...and they. are .listening!...He threw good balls mainly. He felt the pressure coming like a pro. I could not be more impressed with his field generalship at this point.

Collin Johnson....Where was he? He made a great block but he dropped a TD....I am not worried.

Burt and Foreman were great at WR...I cant wait!

The run game...what else can you say?...I am excited.

On the other side of the ball...I am officially no longer worried at all about our D line....They held up very well against whatreally is a pretty good O line.....at least what we are led to believe is a good O line...maybe we still have some worry there.

All the D backs!...for the most part they were all over the receivers like white on rice. It just isnt fair to have to go against guys that big and that fast that can jump out of the stadium. Did they get beat?...sure they did....ALL D backs will get beat from time to time....we just had too many targets out there every play to shut down everything.

Special teams.....Red Alarm alert!!!!....I dont know why, but if that had been live action, EVERY punt would have been blocked. The guy came off the edge every time , passed the blockers , stopped and waited for the punt to go off. I know we werent returning punts, but why not practice on the protection??...Major worry for me.

Over all, I think I am feeling somewhat confident.....time for another hit on the kool aide

I'm not as worried about punts getting blocked, I'm worried about the fact that our punter just isn't very good. Kicking is going to be a real problem next year.

I'd be more concerned about place kicker. They weren't trying to do anything in punting today. Texas ended up 26th in the nation for net punting in 2015 after Dicko's terrible start and questionable coverage all year. Hell Dicko saved a game from how he handled a bad snap and still got the punt off.

If that is the least of our problems today then all is well. Special teams can be fixed easier than the whole offensive problems we have had the last few years.

Damn oldhorn what's in that koolaid you're drinking? Seems like it gave you a false sense of the warm fuzzy's.:D Just kidding. Just remember, it don't matter who's in Austin Bob Wills is still the King.

Special teams cost us at least 2 wins last year. Not making an XP vs Cal. And the fumbling of a punt vs Ok St in the shadow of our own goal when getting the punt off essentially seals the win.

Lets not discount it.

Something I thought was interesting was Jake McMillon moving from DT to RG and starting with the ones, putting Hodges from that spot to the second team (Vahe moved to LG).

Well just got done watching the spring game on youtube. We aren't there. Excited and will be better than last year but still not there. Here is how I see it.

ND loss
UTEP win
Cal win
OSU win
OU loss
ISU win
Kstate win
Baylor loss
Tech win
WVU win
KU win
TCU loss

I know that is 8 and 4 however I expect to lose at least 1 or 2 of Cal, OSU, Tech, or WVU to poor special teams play so 7-5 or 6-6 on the low end. If we get lucky 8-4 or 9-3 but this team needs another year and another solid recruiting class.

I think we beat both Baylor and Oklahoma. I'm thinking we lose to TCU and Notre Dame and one other school we weren't expecting to lose to, other than that I just don't see us, losing any other games.
