2019 Recruiting Thread

If the horns can reel in 8-10 wins this year they will have the #1 recruiting class in the country imo. Might do it even without winning but on field results will seal it in my opinion.

Herman talks OOS recruiting, keeping Texas HS coaches happy

It’s no secret Texas is having plenty of success recruiting out-of-state.

The Longhorns signed eight out-of-state recruits last cycle and already have four out-of-state prospects committed this cycle.

While Texas head coach Tom Herman is helping UT reestablish its national brand, he made it clear that winning the Lone Star State and keeping highly touted players close at home is still his top priority.

“If we had our druthers, a full class of 25 would be from the state of Texas,” Herman told Horns247. “I think the state of Texas knows that. The high school coaches know that. But we also have a responsibility to our program to find national championship caliber players. If you’re taking four linebackers in a class and you think there are four in the state of Texas that you can win a national championship with, great.

“You offer all four of them and maybe you get two to commit. One decides he wants to go somewhere else. Maybe one grew up wearing maroon pajamas. That doesn’t mean you sign the fifth best linebacker in Texas if you don’t feel like he can win a national championship for you. That’s when you have to branch outside of the state. I think we’ve been calculated with that, and it’s worked out well for us.”

Former Texas head coach Charlie Strong was crucified by Texas high school coaches for recruiting heavy in the state of Florida immediately after stepping foot on the Forty Acres. Herman, however, has received no criticism.

So how is he correctly balancing recruiting away from Texas and keeping in-state high school coaches happy?

“Just honesty,” Herman said. “Our preference is to sign a class full of Texas kids. Period. There is not one high school coach in the state that would tell you differently. They believe that because it’s the truth.”

Unlike Strong, Herman has strong ties in the state of Texas. After all, he’s been recruiting it since he began his coaching career at Texas Lutheran in 1998. Herman also had stops at Sam Houston State, Texas State, Rice and Houston before arriving at Texas.

Herman knows this state like the back of his hand and Texas high school coaches not only know him but respect him. While Strong was more of stranger, Herman is a familiar face that Texas high school coaches want to see succeed.

Like Herman said, there is a need to recruit out-of-state, especially with the number of P5 programs in-state and schools like LSU, Oklahoma and Ohio State having a strong Texas presence. And high school coaches get that. Herman has done more than enough to earn their trust.

Herman landed six of the top seven and 11 of the top 15 recruits in Texas last cycle. I wonder if that will ever be done again?

How many does Herman take in this class? There are presently 20-21 spots and half a dozen guys on the roster that have been recruited over.

Are we currently thought to have a strong chance with any elite OL (I know we have Johnson) or DL? Or are we going to be sweating this out until the end again?

I’m sure through the season some new and old names will pop back up. Just like Ossai and Ojomo did towards signing day last year.

I do not feel real comfortable with these out of state recruits until signing day, some could switch to a school closer to their home.We have WRs and DBs but I still think we need more BEEF on the OL and DT positions so Where is the BEEF???

I don't know if this will help any but with the exception of SC California kids aren't committed to stay home.

UCLA and Cal are mediocre and ST recruits come from all over the country. Which means that an out of state school like WA can come into CA and clean up.

So I think these kids will follow through and will be in Austin about this time next year.

Athletes are nice but I’m with you! It all starts up front. Both sides!!!

I feel fairly confident with chip kelly now being at ucla, you're going to see a lot of those California commitments slowing down. Kelly is a good coach, like him or not, who had real success at Oregon and basically built the eagles that have just won a superbowl. Don't forget, he took the eagles to the playoffs. Saban couldn't do that in Miami and neither could spurrier at Washington. California recruiting is about to heat up----- assuming kelly puts a quality product on the field.

I was reading an article about the Houston kid out of OK, said he ran a laser timed 4.31 40...that is fast. It appears that Duvernay has been recruited over.

That's not fast, that's smoke! Speedstrength might agree with me but it's been experience that hand time is actually -.15 seconds quicker than laser time. Something about our brain predicting things before they happen.

So if that dude ran a 4.3 on laser, than he'd have run a 4.15 on hand. Smoke!

I think I saw a report that Smith ran a 4.3 as well. That's some serious speed in this WR group. I approve.

Duvernay will be a senior when these guys are true freshman.

The kids school is 10 miles north of Norman,Ok and Ou is not interested or he is not interested in Ou which is fine with me but not the norm with kids from Oklahoma.

3 different types of timing. Hand time, hand start auto stop, full auto timing. Full auto timing is the most accurate but the thumb pads can be a little tricky to use. Because of this most of the combine times you hear about use a hand start auto stop system. The hand time conversion is round up a 10th and add .24. Hand start auto stop is a bit newer so conversions haven't been validated but I have seen add .13 without rounding. If they ran a legit 4.3 on a hand start auto stop system you are in the Bo Jackson/Deion Sanders hand time range.

I think that spells it out right there =)roll

They already have 3 WRs verbal-ed for 2019; all rated ahead of Houston. Plus they got Lamb and Rambo last year. Gundy wanting him is all the endorsement I need for a WR(or QB).

Ok, I haven't been keeping up with recruiting lately, but what's going on with Trey Sanders? Just stumbled upon a YouTube video that featured a Texas commit, and an aggy commit trying to recruit him. He sided with the Texas recruit. Anything to this? Video was only two weeks ago.
