2019 Recruiting Thread

If a quality back like Evans signed with Texas he would get his touches, 15 -20 per game. You have to go with what will bring you success and right now we don't have the backs to run the ball like we want to. Lets also be honest here. We don't currently have the oline to be a dominate run blocking team. I think that will change next year, but right now I'd say we are a pass first team because that is where our strength is.

This isn't an bad thing, we killed Georgia by passing to our RBs and getting them into space. A back like Evans would feast on defenses with that game plan moving forward.

This offense requires a dual threat QB, so that's naturally going to be there. I don't think he'll have a hard time convincing Evans that it's only been so QB run heavy out of necessity. RBs know the QB run threat also opens up lanes for them.

you only have to look to the year before....where we had Foreman and see what a top RB does for Herman...Dead right Metcalf....you like the dual threat QB, but you tend to just run him out of necessity....

wait....was it that long ago....sighhhh....never mind

Jordan Moore going to Houston is a good thing for both Texas and Jordan. Here he would have been a career backup getting all his snaps on special teams. In Houston he has a chance to really develop as a player.

Outside of a transfer RB and maybe a Juco or transfer olinemen I'm ready to close the door on the 2019 class and move on to 2020.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Texas take up to about five more guys in this class.

Like I said, I'm good with a Grad transfer or two or a juco olinemen or two, but if we are reaching on high school guys when we are sitting pretty with the 2020 class I will be pissed. We are already going to have a smaller 2020 class, why reach when we can just add more guys next year.

I really think Herman is sticking with this mantra: if a kid can’t help us win it all, then pass. No reason to get to 85 every year. Better to avoid dead weight that will weigh you down for 5 years.

I think we sign 2 more o linemen (1 a grad transfer immediate starter) and call it a class barring something as of now unforeseen.

TFB 1/22:

Updates | OL Grad Transfer RJ Proctor
– CJ Vogel

I caught up with Virginia OL grad transfer RJ Proctor following Coach Herb Hand’s visit with him. Proctor said the visit went well.

Hand and the Texas staff envision Proctor as a plug-and-play at one of the guard positions with the positions left vacant by Patrick Vahe and Elijah Rodriguez’s departures. For Proctor, being able to play immediately is very important.

“[Immediate playing time] does impact my decision,” said Proctor. “A lot of schools blow smoke. I don’t want to go somewhere that wants me, I want to go somewhere that needs me.”

Proctor said he plans on visiting Ohio State and Florida State in the near future.

He will make a decision in March.

For what it's worth..... 9.95er update

What seems to be the preferred order of prospects on the OL (including grad transfers, JUCOs and HS)?

EJ: Finding an immediate impact player on the offensive line is a top priority. The Longhorns are looking hard at grad transfers RJ Proctor, Justin Murphy and Drew Richmond. They could all become top priorities. The Longhorns have also been in contact with JUCO products Desmond Bland and Bamidele Olaseni over the last week. Of course, Texas could add a high school player like Ira Henry, who is firmly on the radar.

Mike: I'd say grad transfer, JUCO and high school in that order. They've found success with the few grad transfers who came into the program and contributed this year. I'd be they lean on going the same route against the gamble of JUCO.

Could both RJ Proctor and Justin Murphy be added to Herb Hand’s offensive line?

EJ: I think it’s more likely that the Longhorns add one. Proctor is going to be heavily recruited as is the aforementioned Richmond, so the Longhorns are going to have to fight hard for both. Murphy makes a lot of sense and seems like layup considering he’s from Central Texas and played for UT staffer Bob Shipley at Belton. But his injury history is reason for concern.

Mike: I will also say they get at least one of those. Texas showed in 2018 that they can plug in these guys and have success, and they should be able to pitch that effectively.

What's that sound? Oh 10,000 aggy heads exploding at once? Lulz.
Was Owens a late bloomer? I have never seen him play or even seen a highlight video (so not commenting on how good he is), but his offer list isn't what I would have expected. Is he just a freak athlete? Or maybe his grades scared off some elite teams (probably not as he has an IVY league offer)? Or maybe he was 100% UT so nobody else even tried. Just didn't know the back story on how a 5 star could be underrecruited in this day and age.

Here's how I'd explain it... bc i agree with you, it is odd in this day and age.
1) Bad junior film + elite athleticism = 3*
2) Good/Great senior film + same elite athleticism = 4*
3) Blow away scouts and analysts at UA game practices all week and ball out in game + same elite athleticism = 5*

Actually makes some sense. By the time the other big boys noticed him at UA game he was already signed. This certainly doesn't happen very often. Would have been interesting to see if his offers blew up or not without the early signing day. Sounds like they likely would have.

Yes, 64 nailed it. SR bloomer, ++ athlete and great all star game and camps. UT jumped on him through great scouting. None of that will assuage apoplectic aggys who are blathering about BOM bias today. Your safety commits in this class are solid but Owens’ upside is higher.

You mean by the time bama and aggy could get out the checkbook. ;)

I dont care about "3" stars....."4" stars...."5" stars....."dancing with the" stars......just give me kids who have heart and passion about getting better every single day. Dont get me wrong......God given talent is huge....but to keep that fire burning you need a little heart to get yourself to the next level.

Gentlemen,

One of these days I'm going to have to have a very long, very detailed conversation with you about what it is to be recruited by division one schools. There is a giant void between what you read, and what goes on in a recruits mind. I have purposely stayed away from this thread or topic because quite frankly, it doesn't matter who we recruit --- it matters who we sign.

One of these days, I will will give you a full expo as to what being a recruit is really like--- and this was back before the social media days-- unless my book deal goes through ;)

That was a joke btw

You've been hanging out with Herman? Herman says he's far more concerned with bad evals the program takes than who got away.

The whole $9.95 recruiting industry these days is based on shirts and shorts performance at elite invite camps/all-star games over actually watching film and games. They are lazy.

Whittington should be a 5 star as well.

Hell, neither even threw out an offer, much less opened up the payroll. Alabama offers 200 kids a year that couldn't commit if they wanted to. Owens flew totally under the radar, then blew up. Kind of nice to see a kid come out of no where. If my memory is right Huff blew up like this years ago, and he turned out to be really good. Nobody really knows with 18 year olds.

The rankings services are a business. They are selling clicks, and how do you generate more clicks/ subscriptions....by creating controversy.

No doubt. Save your $$$ and check the regular websites at the end of the day.

did yall read about Owens measurables?...I guess they were tested for the UA game....anyway...Owens was other worldly....His broadjump of 11'2" was better than all but 2 or three guys at the NFL combine!...A high school kid. His reach was better than anyone at his height....in the League I am talking again....then his speed.....Jesus!
4.37 to 4.52 depending on which instrument was used....

I saw a clip of him running down a guy that had 15 yards on him and it looked like a cheetah on a sloth....rediculous...I dont know how long it will take to perfect technique, but he has all the tools right now.....and did I mention he is just a HS guy that hasnt met Yancy yet?

Do yourself a favor and watch his recruiting highlight reel on Hudl. I hadn’t seen any film on him either. Holy shit! That kid is nasty. Fighting off blocks, great open field tackles, and knocking the snot out of people. I’m starting to feel bad, because I think I just watched him kill a kid. Wow...

He’s also got pretty good hands. He ran a pick back and I was very impressed by his cuts and speed. He has some Sterns-like picks.

Our secondary is about to get even nastier.

Everything I have read about this kid is amazing. It's like a fat girl goes off to Europe for summer vacation and comes back a super model.

He is 6'2 and 197 with an arm span greater than that of guys 6'7.
Crazy speed, something like a 10.4 100 m. Then you see his film and he looks like the second coming of Ronnie Lott.

Of course when something like this happens I had to go over to texags.com just to peek at their reaction. It is as expected. Leal moves up to the # 3 player in the couuntry and there is 1 thread about it and maybe 5 posts about Leal and about 2 page in that thread complaining about Tyler Owens.

Here is the part that I don't get? If Owens is that good, then he deserved the bump in the rankings. If he sucks, then they can point to it as Texas can't develop talent, Texas wasted this talent, yada yada yada.

What they don't want is when a 3'star like Connor Williams turns into an All American, or a guy no one know about comes to Texas and blows up. That makes the coaches look really good.

The crying about the BMC is just sad, be happy you got a damn good player in Leal.

He played HS ball at plano east so he plays against the big boys. Great job by the staff getting him.

I've seen him up close and personal many times and I'm actually not impressed that much by his football ability. He can eat up space with the best of them and has elite athleticism that makes up for a lot of things he does especially in hs. He's definitely a guy who needs to sit a year or two and wait his turn. He could easily run down on kickoff and punt and make something happen. Going to be a year or so before we see him lining up at safety or bulked up and playing lb. But bc of hes measurables and athleticism he's got NFL level ceiling if the coaches can develop him

Yeah, that guy apparently sells something that isn't his to sell. Pretty good work if you can get it. Hustling.

I wonder how this works? I assume if he directs a big time recruit to a school, then the coach owes him a favor. Kind of smart to make your money on the kids nobody really wants, keeping the blue chips clean, while still getting paid. FWK is smarter than I gave him credit for being, I bet this is perfectly legal. Funny seeing how the game actually works.

I am paying someone to help my kid get academic scholarship $, make a higher ACT score, help with essays & paperwork, etc... Seems like basically the same thing. Why do I feel like a sucker after reading this?
