Big 12 Fall Camp Thread

Riley was HC at OU for 5 years. In 5 years, he won 4 conference championships, 3 playoff appearances, coached two Heisman trophy winners, finished with a 55-10 record, and has the highest winning percentage of any coach in OU history.

If that’s not considered an established HC then what is lol?
Here’s a rhetorical: do you think Riley will repeat that record at USC? You think being handed a team coming off a CCG has anything to do with Riley’s success and record at OU? I don’t recall ANY accolades Eiley earned at ECU do you? So when Riley fails to repeat the success at USC that he had at OU he’ll be considered less of a coach right?

My prediction is 8-4. I'll also predict that USC finishes ranked higher than OU this season.
Awfully generous in the win column considering OU lost their qb’s, new qb, new offense, new defense, anything over 6 wins Venables will have overachieved on top of that he can’t recruit

I can see Riley being hugely successful at USC. Bell, you keep dissing him like he's a scrub coach. He's not. I'm glad that he's gone from OU. I'll take my chances with Venables. I'd rather see him at OU than Riley.

Do you see Riley replicating or bettering his record he had at OU? Riley’s a good OC whose tendencies got exploited by better defenses. His defenses were a joke. Venables is proving to be a better recruiter in his first full recruiting cycle

He very well could replicate his record at USC. The Pac 12 is there for the taking. Riley is a damn good coach.

Not as a head coach.
Uh so if Riley wasn’t calling the offense while he was at OU, what traits pray tell did he possess that would make you say he was a good head coach but Venables can’t be? Riley allowed OU to have a laughing stock defense his whole tenure as head coach, do you find that noble?

@Okie70 if you're reading this what was the deal with Stogner and Mims?

I certainly won't miss them those guys have killed us the last 3 years.

I don't see how anyone can be a better coordinator than Riley and that includes Lebby.

What do you think of the new dc?

Let us know.
When Riley left so did Stogner, just in the opposite direction of where Riley was headed. A lot of grumbling among the receivers about play calling from Riley last year. Mims was going to transfer out if Riley stayed. Mims will be a focus this year in Lebby’s system.
OU’s DC is to Venables what USC’s OC is to Riley.
Lebby will put a bigger emphasis on running the ball than Riley did. Lebby offense had a lot of production the last couple years

I’ll be willing to bet Riley does not replicate his record at OU. Riley’s a good OC
It's going to be hard to replicate making the playoffs 4 of the next 7 years but I could definitely see him do that at USC with the lack of competition in the Pac 12. He's always going to recruit offensive talent because kids want to play his offensive system. If he ever finds a good defensive coordinator I could see USC going back to the Pete Carrol days.

4 of 7 years? No his offense only got smashed 3 times in the playoffs but he won a lot of conference games yippee. Bob Stoops been retired for 5 years and has as many bowl wins in that same 5 years as Riley does lol let that sink in. Good riddance soft Riley. Riley king of the conference wins

Bro, I hate to break this to you but OU is going to have a tougher time in the B12 with vegetables. The SEC is another story altogether. I wouldn't take conference wins lightly.

Venables will do much better in the SEC than soft Riley would have. I mean heck we’ve already seen Venables defense put a smack down on Bama a couple of times and we’ve seen a Riley offense get smacked down by Bama, Clemson, LSU, Georgia. Venables already recruiting better that Riley in his first year and starting to bring in D lineman who would never play under Riley. I think the future looks bright headed to the SEC. I’m trying to get someone to remind me what accolades or skins on the wall Riley had before coming to OU and being named the HC after 2 years? Anyone?

I wonder how the OU players, who were willing to stand up for Gundy, feel about their nutless head coach who refused to?
Well apparently everyone feels pretty good about the situation considering there aren’t any decommits?

Roll my 👀 😔

Riley is a great offensive mind I can't deny that. The Pac XII is a joke no there's no reason he can't pick up where he dropped off this year.

I'm not a OK/Lincoln Riley shill but with the exception of Dave Arranda nobody could figure out his offense.

OK may not have had an elite defense but they were improving under Alex Grinch. I hate to say it but he made some great adjustments in the second half in the TX game.

Venables has never head coached a game.

They would have never played for Riley? Belldozer they had 2 dl get drafted one in the second round. Never works have played for Riley? Belldozer last year Caleb Williams was not OK top recruit a dl or of Texarkana named Clayton Williams was.

It was an unusual year for recruiting in Texarkana. They had 4 elite dl and lbs. Two of them went to OK and none of those 4 kids even considered TX. Thanks a lot Herman.

Venables is going to appreciate those players he's inherited.

I've never said it before but I've figured out awhile back why you hate Lincoln Riley. He's considered liberal on some issues. You've ranted about how he's woke. 😂

And now he's a terrible coach? They were one play away in the OSU game from going to the Big XII title game.

Lulz. Venables hasn't coached one game as a HC and suddenly "he's the answer" at OU? OU fans are going to find out how spoiled they were with Riley. The program is going to take a step back. No way OU goes 55-10 in their next 65 games and has three playoff appearances like Riley led them to. Bell, you're drinking the kool aid from a fire hose. Perhaps you should put the hose down and see what you've got before anointing Venables as the second coming of Switzer, lol.

We think OU got David McWilliams...they think they got Bob Stoops. Truth is, he's probably somewhere in the middle which is okay, but not near good enough.

If Venables were to win a NC in the next 5 years you really think OU fans are going to squabble that he didn’t technically win more games that Stoops or Riley? Seriously?

But I do appreciate you letting me know how I should be thinking.

Do you really think that OU is going to win a natty under Venables in the next five years? Call it if that's how strongly that you believe that will happen. If you're wrong, you're wrong. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I'll admit that I was off if OU kills it under Venables like they did under Riley, but I don't think that's going to happen. All in fun!

Dang these OU fans are tough to please! "She" and "Soft"???? What were they saying about Gibbs, Blake and Shellenberger back in the day? Look no further than Austin to learn if you have a good coach you better hang on to him, because there are no guarantees.

I’ve already said on here I think Venables wins a playoff game at the very least in the next 3 years so I have no problem saying that I think OU under Venables can win a NC in the next 5 years.

What teams did Riley and Stoops coach as an HC before taking over in Norman?

It’s a gamble hiring a coordinator as a head coach. Venables could end up being a damn good coach. But we don’t know that for sure until we see the product on the field. Assuming he’s going to succeed just because Stoops and Riley did is being a little bit naive.

He could just as easily be Gary Gibbs or John Blake.
