Beard already made it to the final at Tech. His ceiling is certainly higher than Barnes's.
We’ll see. I personally don’t see it. Yes Beard made it to the final 4 and got to the title game. Rick Barnes got to a final 4 as well so I’m not sure that proves his celling is higher than Barnes.

Ugly win but we'll take it. Interesting stat...of the top 10 teams in D1 basketball with the toughest remaining schedule, 8 of them are in the Big 12.
With this team, we don't have a guy that we can give the ball to and tell him to go get us a bucket. They have to use all 5 guys in motion. Problem is that motion offense takes a long time to perfect. Beard has done a remarkable job taking a team from literally nothing and gathering a decent group of transfers within a few months of being hired. This is how its going to be with this group - winning ugly. It's the best approach with this team since we have no offensive firepower. We have to rely on our D to give us a chance to win. At least we have the top D in the country. That's certainly something to be proud of but once we get one or two guys who are reliable scorers, we'll be able to take that next step. With 5 stars Mitchell and Morris coming in next year, we have a chance. The good thing is this team will always play excellent defense. I'd rather have a great D and poor O instead if a poor D and great O.

Man, a win is a win these days in the B 12. Was it pretty, no. They HAVE to improve the offense, it’s a mystery why they struggle so much right now. I’m just curious why Jones hasn’t been more of an offensive threat.
Yes, korn does seem to have it out for Beard. Similar to those who want Sark gone after 1 year.
Basketball is different though. You can turn over a roster quickly and see quick results. We’re not seeing that yet. Guys almost don’t want to be the “guy who missed” rather than “the guy who made the shot”.

BTW, did you know (sounds like cali), that the former Longhorn Terrence Rencher, is on the OK St coaching staff? He was good.
Carr has been the best "go-to" guy. I think Jones is just having a hard time being patient which is what Beard's style requires. I love that win or lose, Texas looks competent. Remember Shaka's days of not setting up the offense and just jacking up 3s as soon as you cross the half court? Remember 7ft centers jacking up 3s? Texas is a solid team and looks like a solid team. They have not been out of the top 25 all season.
I wouldn’t say we have looked competent today, or even against k state really. This team doesn’t really look much different than ones we’ve seen the last 4-5 years
I don’t have anything personal against Beard, as I’ve said he is a good coach, and I think he has a chance to have us back where Rick Barnes did in his prime.
if saying his celling is that of a HOF coach is me holding a grudge or having a personal agenda against him so be it.
my concern about beard and it has shown to be valid is his style of play does nothing to fix the offensive problems this program has had for much of the last decade. If a beard doesn’t figure that side of the game out that will be holding him back from getting Texas to where he wants to get them. That is my only problem with beard. You can’t win every game 52-50 your just making things way to hard on yourself

2) Beard is better FG% because of patience in taking better open shots
3) Beard's defense gets an avg of 3 more steals a game (30% better) due to his defensive philosophy

I looked for opponents scoring% per year, but couldn't find it. However, look on college basketball stats under scoring defense:
Texas #1 Scoring Defense currently at 55.2%.
So, yes, Texas is a more competent and better coached team
HOF coach? You’ve said nothing of the sort! You criticize when they lose, and when they win. I’ll give you this - at least your consistent! Again I ask - what would you consider a success or a failure this year?
I have only seen 2 games but my thoughts are we don't have great perimeter play and lack three point shooting. Success with this roster would be a 5 to 7 seed with a first round win and a strong second round showing. It could be a Sweet 16 based on what the tournament brackets look like.
Not hardly. Just because I’m not sold on this team or Chris Beard really doesn’t mean I want them to do poorly. I absolutely hated the Tom Herman hire still wanted Texas to win.
Big boy ball starts Saturday though. Pretty much nothing but ranked teams the rest of the way
It’s both. His style or play in general will lead to low scoring games more often than not, but as a coach you have to put your players in their best position to succeed and it’s painfully obvious that Carr isn’t comfortable distributing and running the offense. When he has shined it’s been when he has been asked to just go be the offense. So let him go do that. Gonna need his scoring to win these games coming up. Toughest remaining schedule in the country
How am I flip flopping. They played their best game of the season, that doesn’t mean my concerns about beard go away or aren’t valid. And BtW I bet if we were to ask him Chris beard would probably tell you he hasn’t done a very good job this year. I hope they have found some things because they are going to have to get some of these ranked team wins to get to the tournament.
My concern/question watching this season is how physical the D is the reason why the team struggles to put up back to back wins?
Is Beard not standing them down soon enough or does stamina need to be built?
If an alpha scorer emerges with this defense we could have some fun in the Big Dance. Any shot at making the Sweet 16?

Anything can happen once you get to the tournament. The NCAA tournament is a bit of a crapshoot. I think they do have scorers. Carr averaged 25 points a game last year. Jones amd Ramey we’ve seen fill it up at times. I just think there is still too much sharing, guys not playing roles that best suit their skills, and not enough easy buckets. Tonight we had 4-5 easy layups off of steals. Gotta look to run a little get some easy buckets.
They really need to get this game on Saturday against Tenn. if this team gets in to a bubble situation which could happen they don’t have anything in the non con to boost the resume. Gotta put a good win on the board
He inherited a team full of transfers essentially. I think for what he had to work with he has done a pretty good job. If he gets to the tournament and wins a game or 2 I consider that a successful season for his first year.
I never had any expectations for this season. When I saw what Beard was left with, I wrote this season off as a building year. I’d be thrilled with a tourney run, but I’m fine with not even making the dance. Improvement over the next two seasons is what really matters.
I think that would of been a reasonable expectation, but when Beard decided to go in to the portal and bring in a bunch of guys who were one year guys and got Ramey and Jones to come back. That was him basically saying “hey we aren’t rebuilding this thing we’re going for it”. Which you can do in basketball you can construct a pretty good team out of the portal every year. Can’t do that in football as much.
We’ll need to go at least .500 the rest of the season to guarantee a spot in the tournament. We have the toughest remaining schedule in D1 basketball. Even if we don’t quite go .500 we’re still probably going to get in because of our schedule and our conference.
What concerns me will be the TT games next month. The first one will be in Lubbock. They will be emotionally charged to say the least. But if we can get the one in Austin that would be great.
Tech has a great team but it’s a team that was built mostly by Chris Beard. They are a snapshot of what our team will look like in a couple years after he recruits and gets his kind of players.
