Governor Abbott Shoots Down Harris County Judge Hidalgo's mask mandate and fine

With 1 more day to go the # of deaths in April is now 63,300. We started this month with 4300 deaths so its a certainty that we will break 60,000 mark tomorrow when the death count for today comes in. But hopefully the worst is over and we can start to trend downward in May.

Most of those deaths are from underlying conditions.life has to go on, unfortunately. Thankfully we’re opening the economy back up and getting things in order for the election coming up

to paraphrase Mark Twain.....

I have read so much lately about the dangers of going out without a face mask that I am now determined to quit reading....

Not anymore. A lot more healthy people have died recently it's trending upwards in that regard. And a disproportionate number of African Americans are dying from coronavirus especially in the south and in MI

I’m sorry to hear people are dying. The country is still opening up tomorrow, regardless. I hope your family member is back to full health.

Thank you I appreciate that. And in TX people are going to work tomorrow albeit, in a limited capacity. I sincerely hope people in TX follow this to the letter of the law. I worry that people in TX will start to ignore the restrictions and it could come back to bite the state of TX in the butt. That's the last thing I want to see happen it's still my home state and where most of my relative live.

I live in a smaller county outside of D/FW. I can tell you, besides schools, people haven't stopped doing shit. Everything is packed just as normal. Grocery store, some churches, hardware stores, fast food drive thru, construction, roadways, gas stations, etc.

The worry will be the densely populated areas of Dallas, Houston, SA and Austin.

That's interesting according to the TX Tribune the majority of the cases have been reported are in the big cities Houston, Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, and San Antonio.

My honest opinion is that the media is not even remotely stressing individual accountability. Making people feel that the only way to be safe is by way of a nanny state-not good. I don't have a huge problem in how are government responded initially because China and the W.H.O. were the exact opposite of transparent. However, once we got a handle of things and some decent statistics of what types of people were dying and how long, how fast and identifiable risks, people are better armed on how to protect themselves.

The news would actually be news you can use if the top down daily message is:
1) "please tune in every night where we review how you can protect yourself regardless of what is going on in your community. We give you this information every night so that you can successfully protect yourself. If you get sick, it is not because the government was not strict enough in limiting other people's civil liberties or limiting their right to earn a living."

2) If you are 65 years and older-you are high risk of death if infected. Recommendation is shelter in place and going out for essentials only with mask/gloves.

3) if you are 65 years and older and your adult children and grandchildren live in your house or vice versa: Recommend the whole family shelter in place and only going out for essentials. If the adult children and grandchildren are going out to work or to socialize, they need to understand the direct responsibility and accountability for bringing the virus into the household and risking the elder's life.

4) Everybody should log on to the free calculator to measure your BMI and if you are 30 or higher you are considered obese which means you are at high risk of death from infection.
You must take measure to protect yourself. Please understand the consequence if you make a personal decision to go to work or go out. If you own a home where adult children and/or grandchildren reside, then understand you should have rules that prevent unnecessary risk of cover being brought into your home. If you are obese, then you are likely to have other underlying conditions such as hypertension or diabetes which increases your chances of bad outcomes.

Not surprised...that is what I was getting at. With the EO expiring tomorrow, those are the biggest worry areas.

I've got a buddy out in East Texas...small town (they all are, lol) and it is the same. Nobody is staying home. Shutting down the huge events, or places with lots of people in small spaces is most needed (obviously).

For the life of me I can't understand why we can go to WalMart, Costco, Walgreens, CVS, Fast Food, Bucee's, construction job sites, etc. but we can't go to the department store to buy some clothes.

Don't go to the movies, sporting events, concerts, large restaurants and bars, etc. All else shouldn't be on lockdown.

Someone may have already said this but, if you are nervous about it, don't go out. Is that too simplistic?

I watched a show last night that was talking abut masks that everyone is wearing. I hate to say this but it seems like most masks are virtually worthless for an airborne virus and that means it’s not holding “droplets” in. That’s probably why Fauci, Newsom, Cuomo, who are so big on locking down America don’t wear them. If you’re older or immune compromised stay home, if not, get out and exposed to it, the chances of dying are extremely low

Unfortunately, and I truly mean it when I say "unfortunately"---- most Americans are just stupid. We have been dumbed down as a society. Here's just a few examples--

1. Paper towel and toilet paper hoarding-- were people afraid they wouldn't be able to wipe their asses or might sh!t themselves to death? Did people not realize that paper towels and toilet paper won't PREVENT them from catching this? It's the equivalent of being told that killer bees are invading America and going to kill us all so everyone decides to start hoarding ping pong balls. Wtf will ping pong balls do to help stop killer bees?
2. Masks- on average, a person touches their face or head 4 times per minute. Now make them wear a mask (something they aren't used to wearing) and they touch their face TWICE as much. Touching your face can spread the fvcking virus. Damn we are stupid. And I know you've seen stupid people RIDING ALONE in their car with a mask on. I passed a dude on my way to HOUSTON on interstate 10 who was in his car with a fvcking mask on.
3. HEB would only allow you to buy 1 dairy item at one point. So one day, I get to the check out lane with a gallon of milk, a half gallon of coffee creamer and a half gallon of almond milk. My laundry wench drinks coffee and I don't and she uses almond milk in her breakfast protein shake. The checkout line lady told me I had to "put back" two of the items because only one dairy was allowed. i had to explain to the stupid person that "dairy" means it came from an animal. Like a cow. And coffee creamer is artificial dairy. And almond milk isn't milk, it's the equivalent of orange juice, except it comes from a NUT. Her response was "it says right there on the carton sir--------almond MILK!".
I knew her level of stupidity had me completely out gunned.
4. When a NEW disease comes around, (or a new form of disease) and there hasn't been a vaccination developed for it yet-- and the mortality rate for HEALTHY people is low, you're supposed to let the healthy people Cath it and develop antibodies so that when said disease comes back, you can better combat it. Remember how every kid used to get chicken pox when we were young? Why? So that you didn't catch it as an adult and it killed you.
When this virus circles back for round two, mother nature will make sure it's twice as potent as it was the first time. Good luck with saving the stupid people then.

I will be going somewhere. How are the crowds in those parts?
Wasn’t a huge crowd. They were meeting all the guidelines that are in place. Took a little while to get our food as to go orders were still heavy.

Here’s the absurdity of this whole wearing a mask in public ruse. So for years I’ve always gotten take out from IHOP if I go there simply because it’s always crowded as hell etc. So, today I walk in there to pick up my order, no mask on, of course. The hostess, greeting people at the door says this to the people coming in to sit down to eat”if you’re dining in, you have to wear a mask”

I asked her how does that work? How do they eat with their masks on? She said once they get to their table they can take their mask off.

LOL. This made up virus hysteria is the biggest bunch of pure bullshit I recall ever seeing

It's the businesses that are requiring people to wear masks because of the stupid people. The stupid people think the mask is a magic force field that will protect them. Corporations have told their employees to continue wearing them or promoting people to wear them because the stupid people won't show up and shop there if nobody has masks on.

It's truly sad to see how stupid we have become as a society.

If the Corona virus has been your first insight into how stupid the public is, you havnt been paying attention.Since I think this is not the first indication you noticed, I assume you are simply being polite.

Here’s a question for you @oldhorn2, you’re a rabid connoisseur of the vacation cruise line lifestyle. So, are you going to let this silly flu hybrid curtail your future sailing destinations or are you going to call it like it is and forge ahead?

if you think about it, it’s possible that the mask they’re going to require you wear on your future journey’s will contain more fabric than that Speedo you like to wear. Just something you should consider.

Bell....to answer your first question....w will be cruising as soon as we are allowed. There are lots of moving parts to this however. The CDC dictates....what ports will allow ships to port....what iteneraries will be allowed...and for practicality....where in hell are the ships? We are scheduled on a ship out of Rome( I cant spell Chivitivecchia) that is currently anchored off Barbados. Nobody knows anything.

As to the Speedo.....although I resemble a Santa Claus silloutte I am about 150 lbs light by cruise ship standards to be allowed to wear one at the pool. Not until I could put on a speedo and face you and look completely naked could I qualify. The women are the same except for the halter top, which is under such strain from the "sag" factor that the straps are surely made from carbon composit to stay attached.

It seems to me that there is an inversion between the size of the suit wearer and the suit itself. Seriously, some of those folks could grab a 30 ft tarp and put it on and it would look like a postage stamp.

I read Carnival is making plans to set sail in August. On the upside, should the need arise on your next cruise you can always have your speedo double as a mask sans the skid marks

Tell them you will check back in a year.

I let my Costco membership lapse because of the whole mask thing. I told them, the masks are ****ing stupid. I told them my local HEB does not require them, so I will shop there.

different places...different ideas...our HEB will not allow you inside without a mask. Our Costco was packed . I don't like it as well as Sam's which is always more relaxed with less empty shelves.

I bought gas for $1.28 at Sam's today. Good news for Bell.....the highways were pretty damned jammed up, and lots of folks in every gas station.

a security guard was killed in Detroit yesterday because he would not let a woman and her daughter enter without a mask. Husband and son came back and the son killed the guy.
