Cliff-notes: The Longhorns picked up the first commitment from the 2022 recruiting class on Friday when Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson committed to Tom Herman, Andre Coleman and Co.
Rankings: Wilson is an unranked prospect in the current Rivals.com rankings because wide-spread 2022 rankings haven't yet been released, but he projects as a future four-star prospect. He is currently ranked as the No.34 player in the state of Texas in the current 2022 LSR rankings. 247 currently has him ranked at No.35 in its state rankings for the class of 2022.
Key Offers: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Missouri and Texas A&M.
Evaluation: Wilson is an all-upside prospect that hasn't really started to scratch the surface of his upside, but he also hasn't really put it all together as a player on the field at this point after serving as a reserve on a loaded Lancaster team as a sophomore in 2019. At a listed 6-4, 207 pounds, Wilson has some seriously physical upside for a young player, but he's just not a player that has been fully evaluated by a lot of people because of the lost evaluation time this spring/summer. I've currently got him rated as a four-star athlete/prospect, but he's one of the guys with the least amount of film in the state. Some people think he has state Top 10-level upside as a prospect, but is just unproven at this point.
Texas player he somewhat reminds me of: Brennan Eagles
Why it matters: The Longhorns needed to get the ball rolling in 2022 and landing Wilson gives the Longhorns a chance to do exactly that with a prospect with enough raw physical ability to almost warrant an offer sight unseen.
