Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Blue vs. Baxter... it's kind of a thing)

For Baxter early last season was a realization that Power 5 football is not what he was previously use to. He has to get past the difference between hurt and injured. I think he started to get there by the end of the season.

South Carolina's players are just bigger, stronger, faster across the whole team. I have never seen another women's basketball team that had such a consistent size and strength advantage at every position. Reminds me of the East German swim teams on 'roids. Not saying they are, just that they look so different from all the other women.

One last comment about Caitlin before moving on. I really thought her team, her coach, did not do all they could to help her when she was being so closely guarded in the last two games. Not many random ball screens, not many screens at all. She was mostly left to go one on one or one on two against bigger, stronger women. That had worked when the competition was not so strong, but it was obvious that she needed help in the Final Four games. And she did not get much on a consistent basis.

Not to mention they teammates missed a LOT of layups.

Anyone who actually watched football could see Brooks was the way. He jumped off the film.

Blue is showing that as well. He’s clearly been better than Baxter last year. Trust the eyes.

I think the biggest thing with the Sweat mishap is not about him falling in the draft. It's that a seemingly well run franchise like the Texans might take him off the board all together. I would assume its similar for some other landing spots. Sometimes getting into the league and staying is as simple as who drafted you and how well that franchise operates. I am not saying he can't overcome that, but it just adds to the list of things.
You’re right. It’s not the Texans are taking wife’ beaters or something.

I'm way less interested in the Purdue/UConn national championship than I am about the women's game from Sunday.
Buy. I’ll have some of that.

Surprised at how little attention there has been around the conclusion of the OB WBB bracket. 😉

I really don't understand why people are trying to put the RBs against one another, or trying to make people pick one over the other. Is controversy what drives engagement? I am extremely positive we'll use both and need both, so I don't see why there has to be an either or. I like both and we'll need both and I always expect at Texas for us to have more than one good RB.

People seem to want to hate on Baxter which is funny because that's all people did for Blue when early on he was fumbling and bouncing everything outside. I'm rooting for both, not picking one, because both are good backs.

I didn't see Ohio St turn down Judkins and say "no thanks we have Henderson so that's enough" did they? I doubt they are trying to have their fans pick one or the other or argue who is better so why are we doing it instead of being excited about having two talented runners as we should.

The coaches don't quite see it that way, which just feels weird.
As you are well aware sometimes game and practice performance aren’t the same. There are also built in biases sometimes.

I was wondering what they needed to see from Brooks besides absolute domination when he touched the ball. I was furious after the Alamo bowl and it made me question Sark. Did Brooks hit on his wife? Like, wtf man. Coming in to last season I was screaming to get him on the field like many of us were and devastated when he got hurt. The UW games turns out differently with him toting the rock. He would have put up 200 yards and 4 TDs.

That said, when he gave Brooks the ball on the last play of big 13 game I got choked up.

In any case, the decision to start Baxter over Brooks was a bad one and represents and potential coaching blind spot. Let’s hope Baxter takes multiple steps forward and Blue continues to shine. Wouldn’t be the first time Texas was feeding two studs. But they need view performance in an unbiased way as possible.

I just think it comes down to the sweat equity they've made as a staff to get baxter on campus. That often matters a lot when things are otherwise close.

Yes, I agree. I would argue that great coaches DGAF and its 100% performance based. Though the portal changed the calculus.

All that said, I feel like Baxter was a BAMF for a true freshmen. It’s not like he sucked…

Baxter is Cedlike, blue is more Charlesish

4.8 isn't BAMF IMO, but I don't discount that being hurt all season kept us from seeing the best version of himself.

4.8 isn’t for a true freshman? How many other true freshmen backs had those numbers?

Let’s say he improves .3 yards this year and carries a heavier load. Is that good?

I am not saying that Blue is a worse back or shouldn’t get more carries, I am just saying that as freshmen go he had a season that compares with some other BAMFs that developed here.

Oh my Ketch, don’t you know you will be called stupid, told to post less and the insinuations that you no nothing about football will be thrown your way with YOUR take on Blue….but then again, most of the assholes (yeah, you know who you are) that would do that are far to smart and way too football savvy to ever admit they no less than most. All they have is their own damn opinion….kind of like assholes…..we all have one!!

Anything below 5.0 at this level is below average IMO

It would be great in the NFL, but not at this level. It's JAGish.

Very good to great players are above 6.0

4.8 is what Henry Melton was doing before he moved to DT.

I just don’t think it’s a debate between Blue and Baxter. My eyes tell me it’s Blue and not even close
The Baxter over Brooks decisions left me more than puzzled last year. Brooks was just flat out better
All I know is that both of them fumbled in the Sugar Bowl and I think that is maybe the main reason why we didn't play Michigan for the championship.

I'm not sure Chauncey Billups is a Hall of Famer. The guy was All-NBA second team twice and All-NBA third team twice. That's the Hall of Very Good IMO. Yet, if you're going to put Michael Cooper in, I guess you have to put Billups in.

All HOF’s are losing credibility in my opinion.

Seriously? He’s not even in a conversation.
Kermit GIF

His numbers aren’t near HOF worthy. 113 wins and 1700K’s ain’t getting you in.
I understand that longevity means he doesn't get in.

But...

1. He was HOF levels in peaks and spurts.
2. You can't tell the story of MLB without him.

First and foremost, great column this week, and I am in agreement with it.

Except, I don’t think RB is like any other position. Yes, there’s competition, but it is unique. RB’s frequently look to split carries to prolong their careers. I don’t think Kelvin Banks is looking for someone to share time.

Your point is a good one.

Still, most guys wants to be 1a, not 1b.

With a great OL, Blue will run for a higher average by a full yard. That may not make him a better back with Baxter running more short yardage. blue will break a lot of runs for 50 plus yards that will distort YPC this year. Wisner will break some long runs too.
