It comes down to the definition of “greatness.” I believe that winning is a huge part of greatness.

Karl Malone was an all-pro level PF, but I wouldn’t call him “great.” He didn’t win anything that mattered (outsides of Gold in Barcelona).

Winning is the point of the game, so you had to actually win champisohips and big games to be “great” IMO.
Well, you need a little help to win. A great player on an average-to-poor team is not going to get quite the adulation and attention he would on a winning team. We may have something of a cart and horse issue here...
