Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend (Real talk on Quinn and Sark)

So silly to call Ewers a “generational talent”.

He played in an elite program at Southlake w a system and talent all over.

He was certainly great but little evidence he was a generational talent. No one was upset he left The Ohio State - and it was up in the air if he was gonna start in late August.
I was lampooned for suggesting he wasn't a generational talent.

Wholeheartedly disagree on the punter. His first 3 punts averaged 37 (during a hotly contested field position game) and he averaged 41 for the game. That’s 8.5 behind the national leader and that’s also his yearly average. His hang time sucks too.
At least he fields the snap

I’m quick to say Sark is really one win from his historical ceiling, but in fairness to Sark, Card has shown the development we are hoping for from qbs. In the end, maybe your training camp article was right, then Ewers had a good practice and Sark got cold feet and went with the 5 star. Ewers looks confused, ill prepared, indifferent, and lackadaisical. It feels like he has a high school mindset, just throw it to his best player and let him make a play. That doesn’t work anymore, and all the opposing coaches know what he can’t do until he shows he has made improvements.

Maybe something will click in the last 3 games. Based on everything y’all reported, this kid did himself no favors by leaving school early. Because of that and injuries he hasn’t played a lot of HS varsity or college football. At this point, the two years and the pros feels like narcissistic hubris developed by unrealistic parents and an entourage waiting to really cash in.
That was well written.

CDC was hired to improve the overall athletic department which is more than just football. Our volleyball is ranked #1, Women's bball ranked #3, Men's bball #12 and the ladies soccer team is in the national playoffs, and both men's and women's cross country teams are still competing for national titles. Texas has the best overall athletic program of any NCAA school. Yes, we are struggling at football but not at any other sport, even without his fund raising abilities I would give him an A- so far.
I can't give him that high of a grade. His performance in TEOT situation was cowardly.

The game plans seem so different for QE and Card. Nothing deep and over the middle for card. So many deep drops, deep passes for QE.

Where are all the sweeps, swing passes, Keilan, BR, Rojo, Jordan speed sweeps...its like he turns the page on the playbook and throws the page out whether that page had been successful or not.

I thought he would kill teams over and over with similar plays at Bama.

It's just maddening to see another Texas coach fail for no real apparent reason other than their own stupidity.
I'm kind of stunned that we're 10 games into the season and Sark seems to be allergic to taking what's easy in the passing game.

Ketch, sorry I missed your invite for B/S questions. Last week I asked, "B/S We are more likely to lose 2 of our last 3 than to win all 3." You said "Sell" because you were getting more confident in the team.

Let's keep the battle going. "B/S We are more likely to go 7-5 than we are to go 8-4."
it's so close... I'm going to go sell

The Baylor line was my favorite. ;)
It was good! They always deserve some sin, although, selfishly I was hoping they won that game. Them losing really hurt us.

Zzombies was just a perfect description and anyone thinking 8-4 was really the expectation, and each of the 4 wouldn't be lamented wasn't thinking it through.

Netflix has been promoting The Bodyguard, which 'I Have Nothing' was written for. I woke up a couple nights ago with that song playing in my head as a result of those promos.
It's a classic. There are worse songs to have stuck in your head. You have kids, so you know what I'm talking about. ;)

With all due respect, why should I calm down when 1) the head coach who’s supposed to be a world-class QB developer and play caller is abjectly failing on both accounts and, 2) the generational talent QB is regressing before our eyes? I’ll calm down if Texas finishes 9-4. But anyone who thinks this team can’t lose to both Kansas and Baylor and then in a bowl game is fooling themselves. Let’s be real, finishing 6-7 is a real possibility. As is 9-4. Again, if it’s 9-4 then I’ll calm down. Until then, it’s nothing but wishful thinking.
Because cooler heads prevail.

You're first to me. ;)
Whats a better plan for next week? Play card who can run and use Robinson a ton. It will be cold and windy.
Use our normal game plan and just take the deep ball out of it?

Why do we only use 2 WR? WHere are the trick plays the motions and screens and middle of the field stuff? Most of the offensive problems can be put on the OL?

The 1994 title was a five-way split because A&M was on probation. Only an Aggie could really count that one. ;)
Sure, but it was explicitly awarded to Texas (along with the others, of course) by the SWC. And, it was done according to specific rules and by laws of the conference as agreed to by all members.
I don’t give a damn if anyone likes or agrees to the rules, they are still the rules. Many of our conference championships over the decades were shared. They still count, just the same.
And, aggy was on probation because they had cheated like mf’ers for decades, and finally had to pay the price. So those damned cheating bastards finally got what they deserved.
The conference counts it, the University of Texas counts it, the Texas football team counts it, and I count it.
Anyone who doesn’t is just being obtuse.
Now, aggy counts that retroactive shit, based on some computer model, and awarded decades after the fact that no one at the time acknowledged.

If Sark is going to stick with Ewers regardless of his play, then the play calls must be hitches, screens, and slants rather than down field bombs. This will be particularly necessary if it is cold and windy at Kansas next week. Without a heavy dose of the running game and short easy passes, it will be a long bus ride home.

I just listened to three of those songs. She was amazing. Brings back childhood memories to boot!

Texas should have kept Casey Thompson and let him and Bijan run some true zone read. He’s thrown for over 2100 yds behind an atrocious NU OL.

I wonder what happens on those early drives if Worthy or Sanders catch those easy passes. With that said, I wonder what happens next week if Ewers stinks it up the first quarter.

KSU just reported that Martinez is out for several weeks and one of their top safties/CB (Savage) is out for the season. Howard is gonna be their QB for likely the remainder of the season.

Ketch, u think WVU (who plays alot better at home) can pull the upset against KSU?

With Arch Manning set to arrive in two months, Ewers can't expect to post a 129.5 efficiency rating for the season and expect that there won't be clamoring for the soon-to-be backup that has the golden last name.
My understanding is that the Manning family have absolutely zero interest in Arch starting as a true frosh. I thought this was already pretty much agreed with the coaching staff. Anyway, Sark is in “ride or die” mode with QE next season — but should make for some interesting click bait articles from March through August next year. Hook’em

Ketch did you really say you’d take Ewers over the entire field of returning Big 12 QBs next year. I think the odds of him turning into a plus quarterback are about 10% at this point. He reminds me of a boxer who came up with a big rep, had a few good-great fights, but has gotten knocked the f*ck out the last 3 times he entered the ring. Fans want to hang onto the potential they saw early, but the truth is that very few fighters come back from that kind of abuse.

Sark is making a mistake by continuing to load the world onto Ewers’ shoulders. Sark speaks constantly about creating an environment that makes his players comfortable and plays to their strengths. His emphasis on long passes and de-emphasis on the run game is NOT creating a comfy structure for Ewers. It’s doing the opposite- reinforcing anxiety and ingraining failure. The best thing Sark can do next Saturday is to announce Card as the starter, along with saying that he expects both QBs to play. This may let Ewers relax and decompress a bit. If Card has an adequate to good game and we win, great. If Card struggles, Ewers can come in and potentially save the day. Some guys just play better off the bench.

Bottom line, the current shit ain’t working. When that’s the case, smart people make adjustments. They don’t make lame excuses about how making a change is ‘unfair‘ to the backup (the lamest excuse ever). People started out with a lot of faith in Sark. That faith has been tested and nearly destroyed. I’m hoping to see a couple of successful chess moves from Sark, and better play out of the offense as a result.

God, you couldn't have anyone, could you, play worse offense!???!???
Tragic!

Ketch on Saturday, immediately following the game:

What a waste.

With the eyes of the nation upon them and a monumental opportunity at their fingertips, Steve Sarkisian and his Texas Longhorns picked a hell of a time to be wildly inept on offense for four quarters.

There's really no other way to get around it.

Everything about Sarkisian's famed offense was poor on Saturday against TCU in a 17-10 loss.

Ketch’s opening sentence from 10TFTW on Sunday evening — after stoking the flames barely a day earlier… that’s rich

Everyone just calm down.

It's Sark's job to produce elite quarterback play. It's why he was hired.

I think this is the problem with perhaps the media's understanding of Sark's role. No offense, but y'all are still enamored by his performance as an OC and Mack Jones with Bama in 2020.

Sark's job isn't to produce elite QB play. Its to win games. Sark is still in play caller/QB coach mode and is unfortunately given the benefit of the doubt by you guys (not just here at OB) for having this special talent. This skill set doesn't win games alone and we would all, for sure, take wins over putting QBs into the draft.

The issue here lies in the fact that he can't put on the HC hat and separate himself from being the actual QB developer. I think Ewers is a good freshman QB who needs time to develop like 99% of guys who take snaps. But Sark is married to the idea of playing this kid like a degenerate gambler makes bets on horses. His ego is involved and he would rather be right than win football games.

Always ask yourself the question: "What Would Nick Saban Do?" in a football game. We know the answer would have been to pull Quinn at the start of the second half of the Oklahoma State game and find a way to keep the double digit margin going into the 4th quarter.

I'll doubt you'll agree with me, because all the media is still in some weird honey-moon phase with Sark, when the guy probably shouldn't have ever been hired to begin with. I'm sure the narrative will shift to what it was with Herman (even though he was less well liked by the media) and you guys will start to say that he is "growing on the job" and then after next year we will be talking about his replacement.

It’s so far beyond my intelligence level to understand why Sarkisian is, still today, referred to as a quarterback guru or quarterback whisperer. During his time in Austin all of the quarterbacks he has worked with have regressed. Factually speaking, his head coaching record overall is at .549. He has yet to even reach that pitiful level at Texas. CDC made an awful mistake by hiring a coach with a bit lower than mediocre record and then expecting him to win at a level satisfactory to Longhorn fans. He doesn’t even talk a good game anymore, nothing good to say after these last few performances. Look at who all is gone after this season. It’s damn near time to panic once again. It’s thee act same mistakes, with the exact same players week after week. I have no clue what he does with the depth of talent on offense, they are quietly rotting away on the bench. I’m really hoping Chris Beard can restore some pride on the 40 acres.
