Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend

Ketch, wonderful write up. I'm having a hard time seeing the keyboard through my tears. I know that young lady will be successful in life with whatever she chooses.

As for Briles, would the university be that clueless? NCAA cannot let this continue. Is there any rumblings about them getting involved?

You wrote maybe 2000 words (I did not count) and didn't even offer even a small comment on the baseball coach opening?

Ok.
I didn't really have anything to say about it. Everything is in a holding pattern. Also, I'm going to guess it was closer to twice that number of words.

Beautiful opening story, Ketch. I had a similar experience with my daughter (cross country, t&f) through her HS career with Wolf-Parkinson White syndrome. Man, the look on his face was like looking into a 4yo abstract mirror. It is so hard to "be the rock". Clearly, he accepted that mantle as well. Caylee probably does not realize the pain, sacrifice, and financial toll that "being the rock" imparts on an old man. But, she will. He is a helluva man. The picture truly says it all. Caylee is, well, the best of all of us with the strength and stamina of the American student athlete. Thanks for sharing that story. Really hit home.
#2. Boyette will take his spot among many of the UT great DL this year. He will thank Poona later.
#5. I'm not the least bit surprised that Kendall Briles would remain. I think that is the story he and his old man developed over a beer and a fire pit. They are both all in.

Thanks again for the opening story. That will get me through til Friday.

I just hope I did Caylee justice.

Excellent piece of work there, Ketch. The Kaylee story kind of puts things in perspective for all of us. Thanks for sharing it and doing it so well.

Kind of felt like I needed to write something about her after all that has been written n other subjects in the last two months or so.

… Once the bleeding stops, I’m afraid my Phillies are headed for another top 10 selection next spring. As it currently stands, am I crazy for not being ecstatic over the thought of them drafting Florida lefty A.J. Puk? I think I prefer Louisville outfielder Corey Ray.

I get not being too excited about Puk, although from everything I've read the Phillies have devoted more resources to scouting him than just about any other player on their board so probably safe to assume he's the pick there.
Any particular reason you'd prefer Ray over Kyle Lewis out of Mercer? That's who I'm really hoping the Braves land at 3.

Confirmation bias. I read an article this weekend on him and kind of fell in love with the guy's story.

Dude. That Caylee story, and your added narrative with regard to her father, had me in tears. That family has been through quite a lot and that girl is a fighter. The part that got to me, though, was the paragraph about her father taking the journey with her.

Really fine job putting that story together.

So did Fowler not make the mark on his SAT? Seems like that was assumed in a buy/sell question, but I hadn't seen that mentioned in recent threads.

The father/daughter story, beautiful. I grew up during Ali. Great boxer. Fastest hands for a heavy-weight, ever. Became Muslim and said no to selective service, aka draft, due to his religion. See Koran, now you have your answer. No problem with him being young and cocky as good as he was. When he fought Sonny Liston it was thought no one could defeat Liston. Same thing when he fought Foreman in Africa because at that time Foreman was just murdering his opponents. Ali was a light for his community at that time. He also joined the Muslim group that believed in racial separatism and that whites were created by the devil to torment the blacks. The Muslim group that Ali joined had Malcom X murdered and Ali said nothing. Ali was extremely smart and yet had an initial deferment from the Selective Service because he tested so low on the intelligence test. Ali said he was dropping his given name because he called it his slave name even though he was named after Cassius Clay, an abolitionist. Looking at these few facts it seems that Ali was like all men, he had a talent, two actually; athlete and very bright, had his troubles and made his share of mistakes. He was a polarizing figure for most of his fighting life until he started fighting a different opponent: Parkinsons. Given all, I would praise the life of Caylee over Ali. Her light seems to shine brightest when facing her troubles. Rare quality.

Could have done without the Obama quote... Regarding Ali, greatest boxer I ever saw - but definitely a controversial figure as I was growing up. It's interesting to see how history has treated him.

really?

I had a feeling someone would know them from the board. Keke has a BIG family. I used to date one of her cousins.

Yep . Keke Dad is my moms first cousin. So we're really like 2nd cousins but all of my family and their family see each other a lot when we're in town or when they come to Austin.

I agree that you did her justice, Ketch. After going through my daughter's first knee surgery this year (from basketball) and having to coach her softball team with her on the bench keeping books, I have a SMALL taste of Dad's pain. As a pharmacist, I also know the anger and frustration that our medical system creates. SO many folks come into my pharmacy looking for answers that they cannot find. Misdiagnosis or no diagnosis haunts so many people. Professionals not believing something is wrong and/or making snide comments is too common. I do not fault physicians for not knowing everything, or not finding a strange diagnosis early, but I fail to understand those who make comments like the ones Caylee had to endure. Good job honoring her - now the OB community is on her side with support and prayer!

a. What was the issue with the Obama quote? That it was from Obama?

b. The way history has treated Ali is a fascinating and nuanced discussion.

Great piece, man. My SIL has EDS. Diagnosed maybe 20 years ago. Rare condition. It's a rough go, but manageable. Just gradually breaks you down. She was a show horse rider. Now she just tries to be with the horses as much as possible, even though she's not supposed to. Can't bear her own children and it would be tough to raise a child period. It's probably an understudied condition because of its rarity and lack of awareness. Best of luck to the Marshall family.

Don't remember seeing this in your piece, but the NCAA golf substitute rule is ridiculous. Can't believe that exists in this day and age. Still, that was great theater and I had a feeling it was just too many things pointing towards a magical moment for Oregon.

The Helwani thing is so petty by Dana and the UFC. They are missing the forest trying to control the leaves.

It felt damn good watching Rockhold get his smug face pounded in and then acting like a baby afterwards. The dude pouted like a champ, that's for sure. Be better is right. Hope he has to sit around awhile and face someone else before getting another shot. Good for you, Bisping.

I was shocked by Urijahs performance. Cruz was Cruz, but I think once Faber took that first shot that sent him to the canvas, the whole fight changed. He literally did nothing after that except survive. How can you not give Cruz props for continuing to win? I don't like the guy, but nobody can figure him out. Not sure where Faber goes from here, but that was bad. Garbrandt does look like a scary dude in that class if he can continue to evolve.

Dan Henderson sounds like he's fighting for a check at this point. Loved that fight, but I've probably listened to a half dozen interviews with him over the last week and he's constantly mentioning needing money. Hope he doesn't just go that route, but I feel like we get more of him, because as he said he's got bills to pay. *Amending my comments from earlier here as I just looked and he made $800,000 last weekend, so why does he sound so hard up for money?

The Brock thing is really interesting. I'm super pumped, but what is going on here? It's a money grab for the UFC and Brock has had the itch for a while, but if he loses and/or gets hurt....and it's not like Mark Hunt couldn't pull it off, what is Vince and the WWE thinking? That's a chink in the brand for sure with SummerSlam looming the next month. Does everyone involved think Lesnar just rolls through Hunt with no concerns? It's a risk reward scenario I suppose. However, Brock is already one of the biggest sells in WWE and doesn't really need a push from the UFC and if he wins I guess there would be a little cross over appeal of a few new fans, but it wouldn't be significant in my mind. The aura remaining in tact is more important, IMO. Especially when you consider a good portion of the WWE fan are doesn't know who Mark Hunt is and the others know he's a jag. I think Brock has always wanted to go back because of how things ended last time and this was a prime spot. Very interesting scenario. Regardless, bring on 200!

Caylee & her Dad give new meaning to "EPIC HEROES!

In general, the people who seem to have the greatest & most enduring strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, are those that have believe in God.

Damn man, I had no idea about Chris' daughter.. Thanks for sharing Caylee's story, let's get something together with the old gang?

@Ketchum

Hey ketch teared up reading about that remarkable young girl. We have been going through quite a bit with my son who just finished his jr year. For the last 2 years he has been experiencing pain up and down his spine, hip, shoulder etc... Recently the pain has become a daily issue. We have taken my son to countless doctors. It seems strange to see you post this as we had an ear doctor 3 days ago who did a paper on this in college and made mention of this disease and said we should get him checked for this same diagnosis. Easier said than done - apparently not many doctors are willing or able to give such a diagnosis.

Can i message you personally somehow with this app? I have some questions and I am hoping maybe your friend can help.

Man, being a parent is scary. I looked at my kids last night and nearly teared up just at the idea of anything happening.

Amazing that the national championship because it doesn't have a rule that allows a hurt player to be replaced.

Rockhold was soooooo smug. That he got knocked out and not just beaten, was awesome to witness.

Urijah is in the Hall of Pretty Good, but not much else.

I'm kind of interested in the Hunt fight. More than I thought I would be.

Yeah, sometimes these guys get so caught up in their skills and their look on paper that they forget it's a fight.

Also, I try to live in blissful ignorance when it comes to my kid.

Has there ever been a more arrogant display of attitude towards an opponent that backfired more than that one?

It was pretty bad, but that's a good question. Today, with all the coverage and press conferences and diary videos and promos, there's more coverage than ever by a mile. I watched nearly all of them and he was one of the most arrogant I've seen. I've seen more animated and more boastful and degrading, but his level of just dismissive arrogance was off the charts. He believed it. "Believe" was even part of his own personal marketing campaign, now that he's got all these sponsors and fame. Oops. I'd rather have a guy yell at me and call me names than just be dismissive.

One more thing I feel I need to say regarding Bisping. Earlier I praised him for the fight and his handling of it, but I recently ran into the "post" post fight press conference video. Now, I know Bisping is Bisping and he's always been loud and brash and offensive and he's sincerely apologized for it all over the years as he's grown, but he called Rockhold a "fa**ot" in the non aired portion after the press conference was disbanding after he tried to shake Luke's hand and was rebuffed. I'm not trying to be a hypocrite here, because in my younger days I certainly said some things in hostile situations that I deemed just generic slang at the time out of ignorance, but that was a different time and Michael needs to be better than that because it really takes some of the enjoyment and honor out of what he accomplished. I know it was heat of the moment stuff stemming out of bad habits, but be better Bisping, as well. Seems like it's largely going unnoticed, but if that would have been someone else in a different scenario, I think the pitchforks would be out.

Bisping was an idiot for that remark. He couldn't keep it classy through his biggest moment.

He made Luke look better... some how.
