Men’s Hoops: Do you care?

Please explain how these Uber talented teams like oh st, ill, tx, va, BYU get beat in the first rounds ? They are taller faster better coached and played much tougher schedules

Okay idk about the better coaching part that is debatable with certain teams. Well UCLA has talent and their best player came back. They will beat abilene. They took down Michigan state then the Mormons.

Judging coaches success based on the NCAA tournament is a fools errand. It really is a crapshoot and the best teams rarely end up winning the whole thing most year. A lot of great coaches haven’t had, or waited a long time for tournament success.

Jim Boehiem in 40 years as a HC has went to the final 4, 4 times. Roy Williams never went to the final 4 at KU. Goes to UNC and has 3 titles, Bob Huggins has never been to a final 4, took Bill self 3 years to win a tournament game at KU

so if your basing your coaches success on tournament wins you are probably going about it the wrong way and if you are hiring a coach based on “who can win in the tournament” you are going about it the wrong way for sure.

and let’s just go ahead and clear up. If Texas did fire Shaka, Chris beard probably isn’t attainable

Come on with this smokescreen, man. In the short term, sure. Over the longer term, good and great coaches win games in the tournament.

Jim Boehiem in 40 years as a HC has went to the final 4, 4 times.

Boeheim has five Final Fours (not four), three championship game appearances, and a national championship. He also has 18 Sweet 16s. His teams make the Sweet 16 almost half the time.

Roy Williams never went to the final 4 at KU. Goes to UNC and has 3 titles

Beyond wrong. Williams had four Final Fours at KU, including two close losses in the national championship game.

Bob Huggins has never been to a final 4,

Wrong again. Huggins has two Final Fours.

took Bill self 3 years to win a tournament game at KU

Self went to the Elite Eight in his first season at KU. He has been to the Elite Eight 10 times in his career, including once at lowly Tulsa. Don’t forget the three Final Fours, two championship game appearances, and national championship he has as well.

You’re basically 0 for 4 on your examples. Perhaps consider that your argument is a bad one.

Roy Williams never went to the final 4 at Kansas. Look it up. And the reality is the NCAA tournament isn’t really designed for the best team to win. In fact the best teams almost never win. Making decisions on your program based on what happens in the tournament will get you in trouble.

Okay, here's the thing-- in a one game deal, a team can just get hot and beat a better team. The best unlv team in the 90s had their closest game in the tourney against a 12 seed ball state. That Florida Gulfcoast team a couple years ago just caught lightning in a bottle for a week or so. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT-- ACU SHOT 29% AND WAS JUST AS AWFUL ON OFFENSE AS WE WERE!!!

We couldn't score due to the same old bs system, and the same old bs habits that smart clearly encourages. You encourage what you tolerate, so he's clearly tolerated this crap for 6 years. Frankly, probably longer. His final four team was coached by Anthony Grant previously so those kids probably already knew how to play offense. Throw in will wade, and you can see how shaka was in the right place at the right time.

Roy Williams never went to the final 4 at Kansas. Look it up

Are you for real?

Who was coaching Kansas when they lost the national championship game to Duke in 1991? Who was coaching Kansas when they lost the national championship game to Syracuse in 2003? Who was coaching Kansas when they made Final Fours in 1993 and 2002?

Roy Williams made the final four at Kansas multiple times. Lost to duke in the title game the year duke upset unlv. And lost to Syracuse his lady year there the year we made the final four

My bad I was looking at the wrong link. The point is still valid though. The NCAA tournament is a giant crap shoot. The best team not only doesn’t always win the best team rarely wins. So firing a coach because he hasn’t won in the tournament or hiring a coach because he “won in tournament” is silly

Tony Bennett is a great example or how nuts the tournament is. Only coach in history to lose to a 16 seed. Very next year wins the whole thing. Comes back 2 years later And losses to a 13 seed. Takes a little luck to win in the tournament

NAACP pitching a fit over eot. We ain't firing the most prominent black coach on campus. But if it happens, Anthony Grant is good. Roll the dice and see if pitino wants another shot at the bigtime-- he is the best college coach of all time. Call Donovan and Stevens and see if they're available. The year to strike was last year-- hoiberg, musselman, etc. were available. We're stuck though. All of this is just dreaming
At least you said prominent and not capable.

0-3 dude! Give it up!

That isn't even considering the fact that he had a 0.805 winning percentage, 9 regular season championships and 4 conference championships all over 15 seasons.

You accidentally stumbled on a point. Look at regular season conference performance. Shaka still has never finished above 3rd in his conference. Indicates to me that he's very easy to scout. Scouting is a little better fur conference games-- indicates her can't make adjustments, nor can his players adjust on the fly

Completely irrelevant. Besides you fire Shaka who you hiring? And don’t say Chris beard it’s not a feasible option. Not this year anyway
All of your arguments you used to prove your point are false. How is it irrelevant? I just think the big 12 is too deep with too many really good coaches and he bit off more than he could chew with this job. I have no explanation for ACU.

Someone who believes and teaches mental toughness!!! Like I said a few days back...just let the contract expire but for the love of all humanity do not extend it.
That’s not really a viable option either. What if we have a good year next year and make a tournament run? You let Shaka walk after that other coaches going to look at you sideways when you approach them for the job.
CDC has to make a decision this year. Shaka is either his guy for the future or he isn’t.
As far as mental toughness. This team has its flaws that’s not one of them.

I can't believe it. I just saw that Oral Roberts beat FL. A number 15 seed going to the sweet 16. We lose to a 14 seed. 2 overly religious schools where you're not allowed to any kind of fun.

But hey the lady horns play tomorrow. They probably won't go far but if they win at least 1 game that will be more the men did.

And please don't let an SEC team get to the final 4.

OK state is getting thumped at halftime.

But hey no less than Dick Vitale has called out LSU about their corrupt program. He said they haven't answered for their violations. And you know he's right for once. And you know everyone knows what they've done and they're so smug about it. But I don't know if the NCAA has teeth anymore.

And the SEC commissioner has played see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. I know big surprise. 20 years ago the SEC and their commissioner made a behind closed doors agreement that none of their schools will turn in another school to the NCAA. That's why they will never get caught at anything.

And I never thought that anyone at ESPN, least of Dick Vitale, would question the integrity, of the SEC.

Well hell, with this sort of logic we should have just hung on to Bob Weltlich.

boy if misery loves company here is my list of worst UT performances in no particular order.
Rice beats TX in fb
any of the four 65-0 beatdowns Stoops put on Mack
Fred Akers sending Craig Curry back to receive a punt having never fielded a punt in college nor high school
Strong losing to Kansas
route 66
the entire Bob Weltlich era
Abe's team that started 15-0 then went 0-15
Couldn’t find anything close to 15-0 and 0-15 in Abe’s texas resume

Well the Big XII went 1/3 today. OSU got thumped. WV and TT lost close games. Baylor won. Tomorrow its KS and OK. I don't know how OK can beat Gonzaga. It's up to KS tomorrow.

Remember this okie lite was not supposed to be in the tourney they were supposed to have a 1 year ban. And Tech shot their selves in the foot twice by missing two easy lay ups to tie the game.

I'd bring in Joe Goulding from ACU. His guys were 10 times more physical and tougher than our guys.

Or even the coach from Loyola Chicago which he took the team to a final 4 in 2018. Has them in a sweet 16 has won his conference title 3 times and the conference tourney twice. And he recruits all his players locally. He has done some work at Loyola in those 10 years he has been there.

We are the laughing stock of college basketball at the moment read this last paragraph from an article.

"Abilene Christian’s win makes them, unbelievably, the second school in as many days to pull off an upset over a gigantic public university while maintaining campus-wide bans on gay or premarital sex and cleavage, among plenty of other sins. Maybe these freaks are on to something".
Article from where? Calling Christian schools “freaks” is a bit over the top . . . or completely ignorant. It’s interesting how our culture coddles everybody except the Christian these days. I guess it doesn’t surprise me . . . Jesus said to expect it.
