New staff rumors

I'll throw out a name for DC I think would be interesting. Clint Bowen from Kansas. KU isn't having much success but that defense is defenitly good enough to win. Be interesting to see what he could do with this talent and an offense that should be able to put up some points.

You really should post less. A lot less. Kansas has given up an average of 41 PPG this year. You keep embarrassing yourself.

Yes they have. However I've watched them play a few times. A lot of their games the defense has played well for a half or even 3qrts, but their offense inability to stay on the field kills them by the 2nd half. Kinda like what happened to us yesterday.

I'll keep posting when I want as much as I want because I do know football as well as anyone else here. Thanks though.

Does you mom know that you're on her computer non-stop, lol? If you have something intelligent to post, go ahead, but please think before you post. You continue to make a fool out of yourself, junior.

Speaking of running backs.. what happened with Donald Catalon? Was a national top 10 rb in 2014 class who initially signed with us. (think it was the 2014 class)

Ok listen here. You may be a mod on this site that however doesn't give you the right to disrespect people. I have kept things to sports. You will not find one post of me talking down to or personally attacking another poster. I am a 30 year old man, I have a college degree and make a solid living. I've been a longhorn fan since I was in 5th grade when my family lived in Tyler. I deserve the same respect as every other poster here. As a mod you shouldn't really be getting on to personal spats and name calling with posters anyway.

Now back to football

Just tired of your uninformed, juvenile posts here. Think before you post.

I'm just curious - what's so uninformed about his posts?
He doesn't like that I've been saying Herman is the only guy we talked to.
But most of the "informed people" have been saying he'd be the guy for a year. And it's not like the timing of events left much time to seriously consider other options.

He also doesn't like that I've called Harsin a better fit than Herman. That's my opinion you may disagree but it doesn't make it uninformed. I've also said both Herman and Harsin would be done my list.
I'm sure there is other things but that about covers it

Don't we still have Chris Warren? I think D'Onte is a great back. NFL caliber and will have a good career, but had Warren not gone down, I'm not sure Foreman would have the numbers he had.

Worst HC hire UT has made in 3 years. Herman rode Meyer's coattails into an easy HC gig where he was setup to win. There will be little to no improvement over the next 3 years. He will go the way of other coattail coordinators; Robinson, Chizik, Muschamp, Kiffin, Sarkisian, Strong, and on and on.

They are only 3 HCs in the nation with a better record over the last 2 years; Dabo, Urban, and Saban.

How is Harsin a better "fit?"

New Mexios (who was worst team in football a few years ago), Air Force, Navy, Vanderbilt, and Wyoming will all be playing in a bowl game this year. We have missed out two years in a row. Let's get back to respectability ASAP

When Peter Holt took over ownership of the Spurs in the mid-90's, his first act was to fire Bob Bass the long time Spurs GM. Most of us Spurs fans thought that was a good move as Bass wasn't that good of a GM. He brought in Greg Popovich. No one was impressed, the guy never was a GM before and we thought he was in over his head.

Pop hired a crappy coach named Bob Hill, the man had a defensive philosophy of hoping the other team misses. 3 years later, in the middle of the 1997 season Pop fires him and takes over as the coach. A lot of Spurs fans went Ballistic. They thought it was a crappy move to just steal the job from Hill like that.

Fast forward to today and there isn't a true Spurs fan that doesn't think Greg Popovich is the greatest coach in Spurs history. Fact is he is not only a hall of fame coach, but he is considered one of the greatest of all time. Fact is Greg was never a GM before he came to San Antonio, and he never was a head coach until 1997 when he took over for Bob Hill.

Tom Herman is the coach, nothing is going to change that, so lets move on.

Come on. The circumstances are ridiculously different between them.

I'm not saying I think Herman is a bad hire. I think he's got a decent chance to be really really good, but acting like the comparisons between Herman's resume now and Strong's resume when he was hired at UT... or Sumlin's resume when he was hired at A&M... are bad comparisons, is a little unfair. The message board troll who said he was the worst hire ever is way off base, but so are the people who are dismissing these comparisons outright.

Herman has been a great coach at a program that plays in a conference a tier or two down from the job he was just hired to do. He has reasonably impressive experience as a coordinator at a major program that had a lot of success when he was there. He hasn't been a head coach terribly long. He's managed to marshal his team up to beat some big name programs that, on paper, should have been a mismatch. He's also lost some games that leave you scratching your head a bit or looking for reasons to explain them away. What he's had to do on a week-to-week basis as a head coach hasn't been what he'll have to do on a week-to-week basis as a head coach of Texas.

I'm not saying any of this to be dismissive of him as a coach. Honestly, he's exactly the kind of coach I wanted us to hire last time around (and, from my perspective, exactly the kind of coach we DID hire). I believed that hiring someone like Saban felt mercenary and, while I figured he'd likely be a sure thing to win a lot fairly quickly, I also wondered at what point it would become just a great position to be in until he was ready to retire. I felt that hiring a promising, talented, hungry, up-and-comer was better because they could become the Texas guy... not the Texas, Alabama, Miami, LSU, etc., guy... or whatever else was being discussed at the time. Saban is just the most obvious example so I'm sticking with it. 2013 Strong fit that mold. 2016 Herman fits that mold. And we know that it CAN work because there are new additions to the list of top-tier football coaches from time to time. If it never worked, we'd have run out of "great" college football coaches at some point. But we also know that those situations can be rather uncertain.

I still like the idea of having this kind of coach, but I felt like if we were making a change right now, so soon after having tried one of them, that maybe it would be an attempt at going a different direction.

Anyway, I love my Longhorns and hope that Herman ends up being the "someone who will have us competing for championships in short order" that Perrin assured fans and supporters that he was intending to hire. But like I said before, I feel like where the off-the-field results are concerned, he has big shoes to fill and I hope he sticks to trying to do that.

You are the only person in the college football world who thinks Harsin is a better coach than Herman. Why didn't LSU offer Harsin? Why isn't Harsin's name EVER brought up for a big time job....or any job? You wonder why he calls you jr and immature? You must have started watching football when Harsin was at Texas. Now your big knowledge of coaching tells you that the Kansas DC should be the Texas Longhorns DC??? What???? Because they looked good against Texas doesn't mean they are actually good.

This. For some reason people, including Strong, thought that Texas would be a 10-win team if he were back next year. I never thought that would happen and keeping Strong would just be another wasted year.

Texas has good talent, but not national championship caliber

Which is it MM? Make ya mind up..LOL!

In my mind it is almost a fact that Texas has more talent than anyone in our conference. No one in our conference should come close to Texas.

Outside of USC and Oklahoma, any loss we have next year, and it is not only a disappointment but an upset.

That might not be the reality next year, but I think this team should by all accounts be in the conference championship game and be in the playoffs.

I don't know if that sums up what you are asking but that is how I feel.

Brian Johnson (Miss. State) is going to be a name for OC/QB's. Baytown native.
Brian was the QB at Utah when they went through their undefeated season quite a few years ago. He was also the last in a long list of QB's who came from Baytown Lee. Clint Stoener (played for the Cowboys), El Roberson (played at KS State and then Canadian League), Drew Tate (played at Iowa) and Brian Johnson.

I love bringing in all these guys that are ace recruiters, but I also want guys that can coach the game. Part of the reason we are hiring a new coach is we weren't very good at the little things. I hope we are also getting teachers that know how to teach the game and instill a little discipline in these young athletes.

Right now there is a cancer of losing in this program, I want to know how that is going to be removed and replaced with a winning attitude?

Who would be shocked if Charlie Strong is the coach next year?

Man I really agree with this.

I have wondered how much teaching was going on with the staff. I think Giblet did a reasonable job of teaching his offense, I just don't like the overall concept of the offense.

When we would see clips of the team practicing, there would be a lot of shouting and hollering by staff, but not a lot of teaching. The team never looked like it knew what it was doing on game day.

We cannot reasonably demand 10 wins in Herman's first year at Texas. That is 6 wins shy of tying Strong's 3 year win total.

Unlike Mack, Strong didn't leave Herman a recruiting class to hold together. Instead, Herman has to assemble one.

Facts: Herman has talent to work with (the amount is debatable). Herman will need to install his things his way. That usually takes more than 1 season to attain 10 wins. Herman needs to improve the 2017 recruiting class fast, we haven't looked this bad in recruiting in a while.

On the subject of recruiting.

If we can keep who we have and add seven to eight more key guys, this class will be perfect in my book.

We need one more DE and I think we are going to get him with Chaisson.

We need two Offensive linemen, if we can snag Walker Little and maybe one more quality guy I love that group.

We need two runningbacks, and I have no idea where we are going to get them. Sure hope Tom can work his magic.

We need a linebacker, I'm consigned to the fact we missed on Browning and Heines, so who is left?

We need one top notch corner.

I want Marvin Wilson, but he isn't a 100% necessity.

Those are the needs.

Of course if we can grab a few extra I'd be happy, but this will be a small class, and that is good. I'd rather save ships for 2018 cycle when our new staff can really make an impact.

Here is a list of guys I think we can steal
Tyrese Robinson
Jack Anderson
Grayson Reed
Kary Vincent

Great post. We need 2 lock down corners and 1 fast safety.

Herman or any coach would have hard time not winning 8 next year. As long as they win the games they should 8 should be no problem at all.
