New staff rumors

Herman or any coach would have hard time not winning 8 next year. As long as they win the games they should 8 should be no problem at all.
New coach = New offense/defense/scheme = different expectations than a 4th year coach would have. Remove the Strong glasses. Herman is a first year coach following Texas' 3 years of 5-7, 6-7, & 5-7. Yet, some here are calling for/demanding 8,9, or 10 wins in year 1?

I'm looking for 7-8 wins next year, 2 or 3 more than last season. That is very respectable for any coach in their first year, especially, following 3 consecutive losing seasons.

Herman has to change the culture. The current roster doesn't know how to win. Herman has to install a culture of winning at Texas again.

There is enough talent on the team to win 8-9 games next year. Take away the penalties, turn overs, and poor defensive play early in the season and this is an 8-9 win team. The roster is very different than the one Strong inherited in 2014.

Our best RB may declare for the draft. Our remaining RBs have been less than stellar. Our best WR, A Foreman, is ranked #24 among Big 12 WRs (statistically). The other WRs have not proven reliable. Is Shane hurt? What happens if he gets hurt early? Do we have a QB behind him that has proven he can lead us to 8-9 wins?

Defensively, we are thin on the defensive line. Our linebackers & DBs haven't shown much this year. Who are our defensive coaches and how fast can they undo 3 years of bad fundamentals and scheme?

Our special teams is horrible. Who is the coach and how will they shore that up?

As 1 Big 12 coach said, Texas looks good getting off the bus and that's about it. The new staff has their work cut out for them.

Texas has good talent, but not national championship caliber talent on-hand. I think Herman will own the state of Texas in recruiting. This first class will not be the norm though with the timing of him taking the job.
I don't know about that. He still has two months to sway kids and with how he recruited at houston, this could be interesting

It will be interesting. But, I doubt many are expecting a top 10 class, considering what we have now, we do not have an announced staff, and the recruiting dead period starts in 2 weeks.

People need to consider, how many games would Texas have won without D. Foreman this year? Given that, how many will we win next season without him (if he declares for the draft). Also, how many games would we have won without Shane? Given that, what happens if he gets injured in 2017? Do you honestly believe that our roster is loaded with talent?

. Since Houston is hiring a search committee to find a Head Coach, Orlando should be available for Herman as a DC at Texas.

How is Harsin a better "fit?"
It doesn't matter now but as I said I wouldn't hire Herman or Harsin unless other guys turned me down. If I had to choose between the two though I would go with Harsin. Their resumes are pretty similar.

Harsin has worked for Mack and chris Peterson as their OC.
He has 4 full seasons as a HC
2 double digit win seasons
Has a Fiesta bowl win
He beat Washington State this year to.

And from my perspective if your going to hire a mid major coach I'd like to see expierence rather than just a couple years. Harsin doesn't have the same flash wins that Herman has. At least not as many but no one wants to play Boise in the non con. For the same reason OU and Louisville are wishing they hadn't played Houston. Good enough to beat you but beating them does nothing for you. Anyway that's why I would lean toward Harsin. But as I said I would of talked to others before I got to that point anyway

Y McKnight S&C

Giles(DL), Warhime(OL), and Meeks(TE) all got off the plane with Herman.

Who it it was it had to be done fast. A guy had to be in place very quickly and there were going to be more good jobs than coaches available. We need coaches out recruiting tomorrow. Based on all of those factors Herman was probably the best guy out there. We couldn't have a repeat of the baseball search.

horns 24/7 is saying Brewster is still "likely" to join the staff. OC maybe? Herman will probably call plays anyway.

Or Meekins may be a recruiting coordinator?

• Meekins served on the Executive Board of Directors for the Greater Houston Football Coaches Association from 2009-15 after serving as the Association’s president in 2009. Prior to his presidency, Meekins was a member of the group’s Board of Directors from 2006-08.

• Meekins also served on the Texas High School Coaches Association Board of Directors from 2009-12.

Generally speaking, the OC usually coaches the QBs. Who would Brewster be coaching? WR maybe? Is he qualified to coach the QBs? Again, I don't want a repeat of what happened with Strong, we need coordinators that know what they are doing.

If Brewster is the OC it better be nothing more than a figurative position because we need legit talent there.

I don't care who the DC is, we need him to be legit, shit bring back Greg Robinson if we can't find someone to do the job for another school.

Sounds like Meekins will do what Traylor did. His biggest responsibility will be relationships with high school coaches.

Hermans OC will likely just have the title. I imagine he's going to be doing a lot of the play calling and such.

Is there a head count of who we currently or likely have in place as assistants?

What positions do we still need to fill them and who are the available candidates.

Coaching Positions filled:
1. OL - Warehime
2. DE/DL - Giles
3. TE - Meekins
4. Special Teams/ DBs - Washington
5. Recruiting Director - Chang
6. Strength Coach - McKnight
7. Director of Football Operations - Lovo

So according to the pay sites, this is the staff (per the rumors):

Head Coach: Tom Herman, Houston

Offensive Coordinator:
Quarterbacks Coach:
Runningbacks Coach: Corby Meekins, Houston
Wide Receivers Coach:
Tight Ends Coach: Tim Brewster, Florida State
Offensive Line Coach: Derek Warehime, Houston

Defensive Coordinator: Dave Aranda, LSU
Defensive Line Coach: Oscar Giles, Houston
Linebackers Coach: Dave Aranda, LSU
Cornerbacks Coach: Jason Washington, Houston
Safeties Coach: Craig Naivar, Houston

Special Teams Coordinator: Craig Naivar, Houston

Director of Player Personnel: Derek Chang, Houston

Strength Coach: Yancy McKnight, Houston

TIFWIW, Higs is saying Aranda will be the next D.C. Aranda is the current D.C. At LSU.

I just read the thread, why did I do that to myself? When it comes to fit, he fits. His hires will be focused on Texas ties in recruiting, he will get the Jimmy and Joes.

I like the hire and I love how aligned the folks that matter were when it came down to getting it done.

Enough noise, welcome home Coach!
