Yeah, we knew that he knew, but there was previously nothing available to show that he knew about it before 1998. Turns out that he likely knowingly employed and then later protected this serial child rapist for 35 years instead of 13.

Not that it would do anything for the victims, but I wish that football program could be nuked from the face of the earth.

Absolutely agree... The football program should have been shut down -- i.e. given the death penalty. It was (as still is) the main source of athletic revenue for Penn State. They were protecting it at all costs. I also found it interesting the timing of the investigation and indictments -- shortly after Paterno won more games than Bobby Bowden. They waited until he was in the record books.

So don't take this as taking up for Paterno but isn't this just a person who is now saying they told Paterno back then who is trying to get insurance money from Penn St.? Not saying it is not 100% true! I have no idea because I have not followed it like you guys have.

If there is evidence then Paterno needs to be stricken from NCAA record books and his name should never be spoken. If he is innocent I hope that comes out too...although you guys probably have read reports indicating he is guilty for sure. The posters on this thread don't jump the gun when it comes to things like this from what I remember.

In all fairness, PSU was way out of the depth of the NCAA. They aren't set up to handle anything close to that. That's like asking why a meter maid didn't take down a crime syndicate.

You can harbor a pedophile, or rampantly cheat for years and years, or lure recruits with hookers, but don't allow your guys to get tattoos (or whatever Ohio State did). People really don't understand what the NCAA can and cant do. It can only punish teams based on breaking NCAA bylaws. There isn't really anything in the Bylaws about criminal acts

The events at Penn State are criminal but they don't violate the NCAA rules. The NCAA made a huge stretch when they penalized the program because they knew based on the optics of the situation there was no way that Penn would ever challenge them in court. When the board of regents and the legislature started to push back the NCAA gave in and rolled back some of the penalties.

There are some similarities with UNC. The academic scandal really doesn't violate NCAA rules. They made 4 basic claims against UNC. An Academic advisor wrote a paper for a woman basketball player. The retired administrator and the fired department chair refused to talk to the NCAA and Lack of Institutional Control. The only thing the NCAA really has on UNC is on the woman's basketball team. Lack of institutional control is based on what the Athletic department controls. UNC will argue that the Athletic department couldn't control an academic department and the two women who refused to talk to the NCAA were no longer employed at UNC during the time of the investigation.
