UT grad takes command of a carrier

Nope. He was not, but that is a great accomplishment. There are a couple other UT NROTC guys on here.

I retired a Smoke. 13B for over 26 years. Retired in Hawaii after being an ROTC Instructor at UH. Germany, Korea, Alaska, Ft. Lewis I was a Cannon Cocker. Recruited in Los Angeles and did AC/RC at Shelby in Mississippi.
I was in Oklahoma and Germany. I played with cannons and rockets. Went down range to Balkans in 99. I only did 4 years and got out as E5.

Love Artillery! M109A6
Love it! Miss it!
Yeah my first unit fielded the A6 and first green cycle was qualifying with those. Nothing like the rush I got from being 19 and giving order to fire a TOT battalion 1! I was reading up recently on the A7 under development. You should look that bad boy up. I also was part of the unit who helped form the doctrine on crusader that ended up never being. Still got my army mug with it on there.

Outstanding thanks for sharing

I've gotta look it up but I'm wondering why that Carrier was not named after a president

Guy has a lot of different things named after him. Was a long time senator. I think there are other carriers not named after presidents too... Going to look that up though.

@soco87, we’re you there when Lt Tom Shannon was Charlie Co advisor? He was my advisor and a drinking buddy. He was not a UT grad, but was here a couple years and CO of Carrier Strike Group One and then Military Sealift Command. Really good guy.

For additional context from the previous message the Secretary of the Navy gets to assign the names. Most of the recent ones have been for presidents but that’s not a rule. If you go back far enough most of them are actually named for battles. The other main exception would be for military heroes.

I have actually been to the Nimitz so not sure why I didn’t think of that off the cuff.

The Marine Helo carriers are named for key Marine battles.

And off on a tangent, my friend, Medal of HOnor receipent Hershel "Woody" Williams recently had the ESB 4/USS Hershel "Woody"Williams named for him.

I am sick I could not attend the boat's launch.

I do have both the ship's coin and the ship's Emerald Shellback coin (crossing the equator at the prime meridian), they did an around the world cruise for their 1st deployment.

Small world I suppose. I met Woody back in 2018 when I went to the Army Navy game. My brother is a USMA grad and played there. I am a former active duty Marine. I got to talk to Woody very briefly which was awesome. My whole family is full of Marines so that was a real treat. I must have read his award citation 100s of times because it was on the wall in our battalion HQ when I was on active duty.

Which battalion? My nephew graduated a year ago from Sandy Eggo and is about to deploy with 3/5

Honored to know Woody, working on one of his Gold Star family monuments, almost done.

Added you to our OB vets list.

I flew phroggs back in the day.

Lil bro is Chief of Staff at Quantico, has 3 years left.

A high school buddy of mine, and 1993 UT grad, Capt. Cassidy Norman, took over command of the USS John C. Stennis a few days ago. Not a lot of those jobs available. Figured there are some navy guys on here that might be interested.

That is awesome. congrats and hook 'em to him. UT just had a general named in the Air Force Reserve also, Preston McFarren. These are tremendously honorable and dedicated people.

I have been doing a lot of soul-searching through this painful time for our country -- how do we rekindle some sort of commonality as a nation? I keep coming back to a 2-year mandatory national service. Could be military, teaching, national parks, peace corps (and many more). It would help to (re?)instill a sense of common purpose, discipline and duty. Maybe I am just getting daffy....

Congrats to these fine men and I am grateful for their service. Hook 'em and God bless.

I was in from 2005-2010. Spent most of my time with 1st Combat Engineer Battalion. I went TAD for a deployment in 2008 to Afghanistan with 2/7. Then again in 2009 with 1st CEB to Afghanistan again.

stennis
Vinson
Enterprise
Hornet
Yorktown
Kitty hawk
Midway
Lexington

etc

etc

Did 5 months in Guantanamo Bay in 95 and did 12 months in Iraq 08-09.
I got that fun summer tour in 99 going from Germany to Albania to Macedonia to Kosovo to Macedonia to Germany. We went on alert for Iraq few times. And we was on lockdown and alert after African embassy bombings in 98, nothing like figuring out who was the least drunk to go on guard duty......

Got my curiosity up. According to the almighty Google, the US carriers are

- Ford
- Nimitz
- Eisenhower
- Vinson
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Lincoln
- Washington
- Stennis
- Truman
- Reagan
- George H. W. Bush
- JFK*
- Enterprise*
- Doris Miller**
- TBD**

*Undergoing sea trials
**On order

So all but 4 of 15 named for presidents with one name TBD. Of the 4, Vinson was a Congressman, Stennis a Senator, our fellow Texan Nimitz was of course an Admiral in WWII, and Miller (another Texan) was a hero at Pearl Harbor who was later KIA in WWI - also first African American to win the Navy Cross.

We have a number of helicopter carriers but none of those are named for people.

I started out at Hood and the was in Germany, (Baumholder) for 5 yrs. I loved the Howitzer. The A6 was a kick ass machine. I went into the ADA (patriot)for another 5 yrs which was not a good idea looking back at things. In my mind I’ll always be a redleg soldier.

I made a trip to Baumholder for training exercise first year in Germany when we supported 1st AD. My buddy was divarty in 1st AD. And we had some duck hunters moved into our kaserne the second year in Germany. Dummies almost tripped a mine that some dirt bag brought bag and put in their locker room in motor pool.

That’s really cool. One of my biggest regrets was not enlisting right after college.

A short stint in the military seems fairly ordinary but these lifers seem to eventually find themselves in really cool positions. At least a that’s how it seems to an outsider.
You definitely could have used some discipline.

That is so cool. Way to go and very proud of of our Longhorn brother!

I wish I would have enlisted right after dental school. Would have gone in as an officer plus if you served 5 years they would pay off your dental school student loans. They were needing dentists badly back then. My father, a former Marine, talked me out of it of all people. I had a couple of classmates who did. One became an Oral Surgeon on the Navy’s dime.

Very impressive accomplishment, indeed! What does "logged over 700 traps" mean? Are those flights off the deck?
