What's the difference in paint protection film and ceramic coating?

I'm getting a new car in a few months that I'm definitely going to want to protect the paint from rock chips and swirls. Do both products achieve the same goal through different theories, or do they serve two different purposes? Can one topcoat the other door additional protection, or is that overkill and not necessary?
