RECAP

In front of 3,217 fans, the third largest all-time at Bobcat Stadium, the Longhorns faced off against the Bobcats of Texas State. What ensued what 4 and 1/2 hours of baseball madness.

Of note, of the five times that Texas State has had more than 3,000 fans in the stadium, all five of them have been when Texas has been in San Marcos to play.

Top 1st - DH Ethan Mendoza led off the game with a single to right center field. C Rylan Galvan was not able to move him over though as he struck out swinging. SS Jalin Flores then hit a single to left center field putting two runners on with just one out. Mendoza then advanced to 3B on a wild pitch. Unfortunately, CF Will Gasparino struck out swinging on a bad breaking ball up and then 1B Kimble Schuessler grounded out to the pitcher on a play where he hit a chopper off the pitchers glove that fell to his feet, giving him enough time to make the throw to 1B.

Bottom 1st - RHP Grayson Saunier got the start for the Horns. Throwing a 92mph fastball and mixing in a hard slider, and breaking ball. Saunier got two quick outs against the first two batters, but then got absolutely crushed on a home run to RF to give the Bobcats an early 1-0 lead. Saunier bounced back to get a strike out looking to end the frame.

Top 2nd - The Horns went down in order as 2B Adrian Rodriguez flied out to CF, followed by a ground out by both 3B Casey Borba and RF Tommy Farmer.

Bottom 2nd - Grayson Saunier was back on the mound and got the first batter to strike out swinging, followed by a ground out. Unfortunately, just like the 1st inning, Grayson then gave up a home run to RF, a no doubter by freshman Zachary Gingrich of Smithson Valley to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.

Top 3rd - LF Jonah Williams led off the inning by hitting a chopper to 1B who then tossed it to the pitcher covering 1B. Ethan Mendoza then struck out looking on a pitch that missed outside per trackman. Rylan Galvan then hit a double to left CF to put a runner in scoring position. Jalin Flores then reached back on a fielding error by the SS putting runners on 1B and 3B. Will Gasparino then drew a walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, Kimble Schuessler hit a deep fly ball that came up short and was caught down the RF line.

Bottom 3rd - Grayson Saunier was back on the mound for the Horns. He gave up a lead off walk, but induced a ground ball double play where the ball was hit to Adrian Rodriguez at 2B, who threw to Jalin Flores at SS and then relayed to Kimble Schuessler at 1B. Grayson then got Chase Mora to hit a chopper back to him to end the frame.

Top 4th - Adrian Rodriguez led off by hitting a deep fly ball to left CF, but it was caught short of the warning track. Casey Borba then grounded out to the SS for the second out. Tommy Farmer was able to draw a walk, but got caught leaning and was picked off at 1B.

Bottom 4th - Texas went to the bullpen and brought in freshman LHP Bryce Navarre. The first batter he faced went deep to RF for his second home run of the game to make it 3-0 Bobcats. Navarre then walked the next batter, but getting a strike out for the first out. The runner on 1B then swiped 2B putting a runner in scoring position, still with just one out. That proved important as the next batter hit a single to LF to drive in a run to make it 4-0 Bobcats. The runner on 1B then advanced to 2B on a wild pitch. Navarre was able to bounce back to get a strikeout for the second out, but Jim Schlossnagle was out and made a call to the bullpen to bring in RHP Hudson Hamilton. RHP Hamilton hit the first batter he faced on an 0-2 pitch, but bounced back to get a foul out to end the frame.

Top 5th - Bobcats went to the bullpen for the first time in the evening. The new pitcher struck out Jonah Williams, but then walked Ethan Mendoza to put a runner on 1B. Rylan Galvan then hit a fly ball to CF, but not deep enough and it was caught for the second out. Jalin Flores came to the plate and hit a liner down the 3B line into the corner for an RBI double to make it 4-1 Bobcats. Will Gasparino then hit a single to right CF to plate Flores to make it 4-2 Bobcats, forcing Texas to go to the bullpen. Texas State went to RHP Bryson Dudley, the one-time Texas commit. The first batter he faced was Kimble Schuessler who reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, putting runners on 1B and 2B. Adrian Rodriguez then drew a four pitch walk to load the bases. That brought Casey Borba to the plate who hit a single through the left side to plate Schuessler and Gasparino and tie the game at 4-4.

Bottom 5th - Hamilton was back on the mound for the Horns and got the lead off man Farber to strike out swinging. The next batter hit a single deep to the hole at short stop to get a runner on. The third batter then singled through the right side to put runners on the corners with just one out. After getting a strike out swinging, Texas State called an offensive time out. The runner on 3B would come home to score on a wild pitch that got just far enough away from Galvan to plate the runner giving the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.

Top 6th - Tommy Farmer led off by hitting a line out to LF, a ball which nearly went over the head of the defender as he misread the ball off the bat. Jonah Williams then scorched a baseball off the RF wall, but hesitated when rounding 1B and then tried to turn it into a double, but was tagged out. Ethan Mendoza then popped up on the infield as the Horns went down in order.

Bottom 6th - Texas went back to the bullpen and brought in RHP Connor McCreery to pitch. The first batter he faced he hit on a 3-0 count. He then walked the next batter to put the first two runners on, prompting a pitching change by Schlossnagle, who turned to veteran righty Andre Duplantier. The batter he faced, hit a bunt out in front of the plate and Dre was able to get the lead runner at 3B. The second out was then recorded as the 9 hole hitter flied out to RF. Unfortunately, Duplantier walked the next batter, bringing Chase More of Texas State to the plate. More got a hold of one and hit it out to LF for a grand slam to give the Bobcats a 9-4 lead.

Top 7th - The Bobcats went to the bullpen again. Rylan Galvan led off with a walk, but unfortunately, Jalin Flores struck out swinging, though Galvan was able to move over to 2B on a passed ball. Will Gasparino then walked to put runners on 1B and 2B. Kimble Schuessler then hit a single through the left side bringing home runner to make it 9-5 Bobcats, prompting another call to the bullpen. The first batter against the new pitcher was Adrian Rodriguez, who grounded out to 2B, but it did move the runners to 2B and 3B. That brought Casey Borba to the plate where he got all of a pitch, hitting it to CF off the batters eye for a 3 run home run, making it 9-8 Bobcats. Tommy Farmer then drew a walk, but Jonah Williams grounded out to 1B, which was significant as he came up lame after running down the line and would exit the game.

Bottom 7th - Texas made a call to the pen and brought in freshman RHP Drew Rerick. Unfortunately, the freshman hurler walked the first batter he faced, then walked the next batter he faced. Rerick was able to get a strike out swinging for the first out, but then gave up a double to the next batter which plated a run to make it 10-8 Bobcats. The next batter reached on a fielder's choice as Flores fielded a ground ball and fired home to Galvan to tag the runner going home. Rerick then walked the next batter to load the bases. Unfortunately, Rerick then hit the next batter to walk in a run and make it 11-8 Bobcats. That prompted yet another call to the bullpen by Schlossnagle, who brought in RHP Cody Howard who threw a wild pitch, but was able to tag the runner out as he tried going home.

Top 8th - Texas State went to the bullpen again and brought in their closer. Ethan Mendoza led off the inning by hitting a double to right center field. Rylan Galvan then hammered a ball to left CF for a two run HR to make it 11-10 Bobcats. Jalin Flores then drew a walk after a long at-bat and moved to 2B on a wild pitch. Will Gasparino then drew a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Kimble Schuessler then reached on a fielder's choice, putting runners on 1B and 3B with just one out. Unfortunately Adrian Rodriguez struck out looking. Casey Borba then drew a walk to load the bases again, but Tommy Farmer hit a deep fly ball to left center, which was caught at the warning track.

Bottom 8th - Cody Howard was back on the mound for the Horns. He got Chase Mora to strike out swinging, but then gave up a single to the next batter, followed by a walk. Texas State then pinch hit, but the batter would strike out looking, following by a fly out to RF that was caught at the wall, sending it to the Top 9th with the Bobcats leading 11-10.

Top 9th - Entering the 9th inning, the Horns trailed the Bobcats 11-10. The Bobcats went to the bullpen and brought in their Friday night starter, Jesus Tovar to pitch. The first batter he faced was Jayden Duplantier who worked a walk after a 7 pitch at-bat to get the lead off runner on. Ethan Mendoza then reached on a fielding error as he hit a soft grounder to the left side, in which the 3B charged in and fielded, but dropped on the transfer. Rylan Galvan then worked a walk after a 10 pitch at-bat to load the bases, bringing Jalin Flores to plate. On a 1-2 count, Jalin Flores got a slider up and hammered it to CF send it over the wall just left of the batters eye for a grand slam to give the Horns a 14-11 lead. Texas State went back to the bullpen. The first batter struck out swinging against the new reliever, followed by a Kimble Schuessler walk. Adrian Rodriguez then reached on a fielder's choice, followed by a walk by Casey Borba, but unfortunately, Tommy Farmer struck out swinging.

Bottom 9th - The Horns went back to the bullpen and brought in RHP Thomas Burns, who proceeded to strike out the side, the last two looking to slam the door shut.

BIG MOMENT:

Entering the 9th inning, the Horns trailed the Bobcats 11-10. The Bobcats went to the bullpen and brought in their Friday night starter, Jesus Tovar to pitch. The first batter he faced was Jayden Duplantier who worked a walk after a 7 pitch at-bat to get the lead off runner on. On a 1-2 count, Jalin Flores got a slider up and hammered it to CF send it over the wall just left of the batters eye for a grand slam, the first grand slam of the season for Texas.

That home run was also the 32nd of Jalin Flores career, putting him in 7th place all-time at Texas.

OT: Russian Train Conductor...

A man in Soviet Russia wanted to be a train conductor his whole life. So, he studied, did well in school, had a happy family, and got a job as a train driver. However, one day, he fell asleep at the wheel and hit someone on the tracks. This being Soviet Russia, he was sentenced to death. When he was asked what he wanted for his last meal, he said, “I want one banana!” Bemused, the executioner brought him the banana. He ate the banana and went off to the electric chair. The executioner flipped the switch and smoke filled the room. When said smoke cleared, the man was still alive! Since the punishment had technically been carried out, the man was allowed to go free.

Once again, he got a job as a train driver. Again, he fell asleep at the wheel and hit two people on the tracks. He was sentenced to death, once again. When he was asked what he wanted for his last meal, he said, “I want two bananas!” Again, he executioner brought him the bananas. He ate the bananas and went off to the electric chair. The executioner flipped the switch, leaving the chair on for far longer than usual, and smoke filled the room. When said smoke cleared, the man was still alive! Again, since the punishment had technically been carried out, the man was allowed to go free.

Now, the man once again became a train driver. When he had the lethal accident this time, he was again hauled off to be killed. When the executioner asks for his last meal request, the man says, “I want three-” The executioner cuts him off. “No! No damn bananas! Go to the chair, NOW!” Distraught, the man goes to the electric chair. The executioner leaves the electric chair on its highest power for twice the usual time! When the smoke clears, however, the man is still alive. The executioner, infuriated, asks “how the hell are you still alive? You didn’t have the bananas!” The man, confused, replies, “well, it didn’t have anything to do with the bananas. I guess I’m just…

a bad conductor.”

Jalenb saw this BB article about A&M picking up a star guard from OU what are your thoughts.

New Texas A&M head coach Bucky McMillan has landed his fifth player from the transfer portal. Former Oklahoma star guard Duke Miles, who is in College Station today, committed to the Aggies before visiting Tennessee, USC, and Baylor over the next few days. This continues to prove that McMillan is now one of the top recruiters in the SEC amid his first season.

With Miles' addition, McMillan now has seven players on the roster. Guard Jacari Lane (North Alabama), forward Zach Clemence (Kansas), forward Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana), and guard Josh Holloway (Samford) are the other transfer additions who will either start or come off the bench next season.

Miles has shown the ability to be an elite scoring option on the court after averaging 17.5 points per game and shooting 52% from the field during the 2023 season. Last season, his scoring average lowered to 9.4 points per game, but he continued to shoot above 50% from the field and 43% from 3-point range. Bucky McMillan's scheme is built on speed and offensive efficiency, two areas where Miles thrives.

"Star power" is everything in today's college basketball landscape, and combined with Jacari Lane and Mackenzie Mgbako, Texas A&M's roster looks drastically improved compared to just three weeks ago, and this is just the beginning. Again, the fact that McMillan landed a commitment from one of the top portal additions as soon as he stepped on campus is a good sign for the program's future under the Alabama native.

Transfer Portal Acquisitions Ranking Analysis

Alternate title: Are we overcooking the grits?

There is so much excitement around the new incoming transfers, I found myself asking how excited should I be? How do the spring additions stack up to what was available in the winter? Are these players really, really strong enough to guarantee Texas is back in the semi-finals or better?

Spoiler: I still have no idea, but I took a peek at Rivals and 247's transfer rankings...

TE. Huge need and Jack Endries seems like exactly what we need. And it sounds like he was the second-best option behind Max Klare.
  • 247 rates Endries as the 14th best TE Portal option behind #1 Klare
  • Rivals rate him as the 5th best behind Klare
WR. Feels like grabbing Mosley was perfect and will be exactly what Arch needs
  • 247 rates Mosley as the 46th best WR portal option behind 1 Eric Singleton (Auburn), 2 Duce Robinson (FSU), 3 Nic Anderson (LSU), 4 Zachariah Branch (Georgia), 5 KC Concepcion (ATM)
  • Rivals rates Mosley as the 15th best WR option behind 1 Eric Singleton (Auburn), 2 Duce Robinson (FSU), 3 Dane Key (Nebraska) 4 Noah Thomas (Georgia) 5 CJ Daniels (Miami)
DT. Just how good is Watson and Brevard? Will they fill in for Collins and Broughton?
  • 247: 6 Maraad Watson, 15 Cole Brevard, 18 Travis Shaw, 32 Hero Kanu, 33 Lavon Johnson. Other Notables: 1 Keeshawn Silver (USC), 3 Williams Nwaneri, 7 Jaheim Oastis (Colorado), 8 Bear Alexander (Oregon), 9 Lee Hunter (Tech), 57 Jaray Bledsoe (Miss St), 62 Sydir Mitchell (LSU), 101 Aaron Bryant (Vandy)
  • Rivals: 3 Maraad Watson, 5 Cole Brevard, 8 Travis Shaw, 27 Hero Kanu. Other Notables: 1 David Stone, 2 Keeshawn Silver (USC), 6 Lee Hunter (Tech), 9 Jaheim Oastis (Colorado) 16 Bear Alexander (Oregon), 28 Jaray Bledsoe (Miss St), 45 Tiaoalii Savea (TBD), 51 Sydir Mitchell (LSU), 78 Aaron Bryant (Vandy)

What does all this mean? Probably nothing. But it looks like we got a lot better on the DL. While I trust Rivals more than I do 247, it looks like we filled holes on offense, but the rankings suggest we did well in the spring, but left meat on the bone in winter. I'm not so sure I agree with the ranking. I think both Mosley V and Endries are better than the rankings have them slotted, but I am biased.

Jonah Williams

I feel odd being late to this party, but my parents died around Christmas so I've been a bit busy and haven't paid too much attention.

I know Jonah is ripping the cover off the ball for the baseball team, but how do we expect him to contribute in the fall? The DB room is crowded and he is obviously playing baseball and not in spring drills. However he's a 5* is clearly super confident kid. Could we see him play some special teams?

Obviously the hyperbole can be run with pretty quickly. Just hoping to get a summary of what we could expect this fall.

Portal Kombat: Another WR and DT lined up and ready to go?

1670288926385-png.3556

Day 4 of the Spring Portal brought a little bit of calm after a flurry of activity on Friday.

Here's a recap of everything you need to know...

Another DT to keep an eye on...

One player that we've been told the Longhorns are very hot to trot after is Syracuse defensive tackle Maraad Watson, who entered the Portal on Friday after earning freshman All-America honors in 2024 via 11 starts he made throughout the season.

The 6-3, 311-pound Watson played up and down the line of scrimmage for Syracuse this season and is seen as both a short- and long-term answer to the defensive tackle position by the Texas coaches.

According to On3's Hayes Fawcett, Georgia, Ohio State and Tennessee are all schools to watch in his recruitment, but we've heard the Longhorns might be in an advanced stage for defensive tackle with three years of eligibility remaining.

Sark Stealing From His Alma Mater?

As soon aas BYU All-American kick returner Keelan Marion entered the Portal on Friday, it felt like a situation we should monitor closely.

In addition to earning All-America honors in 2024 for his kickoff return talents, he also caught 24 passes for 346 yards and a touchdown in the slot. It would allow the Longhorns to add some speed to the wide receiver unit and give the special teams a nuclear weapon on returns.

Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas, Miami and Arizona State all offered the 6-0, 195-pound native of Atlanta, who started his career at U.Conn and transferred to BYU in 2023.

Scattershooting...

* Houston safety A.J. Haulcy entered the Portal on Saturday after ranking as one of the best defensive backs in the Big 12 in 2024. Haulcy had started every game for the Cougars over the last two seasons and dominated in the Big 12, tying for first in interceptions with five and finishing second in pass breakups with 13.

* One of the top available cornerbacks in the Portal is former Stanford standout Julian Neal, who transferred to Arkansas on Saturday after transferring to the Cardinal in December from Fresno State. The Razorbacks also aded one of the top edge players in the Portal on Saturday with the commitment of Troy standout Phillip Lee.

* Michigan picked up a running back commitment from U.Mass standout C.J. Hester, who is the second running back commitment the Wolverines have signed in the Portal. He joins former Alabama 5-star Justice Haynes.
