Keith Ellison’s public statement as to why he did not want to release the body cam footage was that it could undermine the case. While I agree that the footage paints the incident in a different light, and tends to indicate that a lesser charge may be appropriate, that would have been the case whether the footage was released now or during the discovery process several months from now.
I think it’s more likely that Ellison did not want to make George Floyd seem like less of a martyr and wanted to use his death to fuel immense anger in the black community in order to create a crisis.
