Ketch's 10 Thoughts From The Weekend ("It's not even close")

Have the NIL resources gotten better in the last 9 months since the end of last season? Or are most of the bigger donors still sitting out the NIL part of their giving?

My biggest surprise after the year the team had last season is it still seems like a struggle to get what is needed on the NIL side.
A little, but there's a real sense that more is needed or else.

Yeah but not truthfully. You said one kid got booted. That isn’t on the OL coach. The Green kid left for money. The kid that is at Texas State doesn't sound like an elite prospect at all. He sounds more like a victim of bad evaluation by the recruiting services.
0 for 4 and never is 0 for 4 and never.

Fine margins.

A song may be missing that does not come to mind off your list, but #8 is WAY better than all the others IMO. Just sayn... Dogg

I’ve posted this a few times over the last several years, but I remember vividly watching Tray Allen in the Texas HS all star game, and saying to my buddy “that guy is terrible. How is he the number 1 OL in the state?” I still have absolutely no idea how he was ranked so high. He sucked.

Mason Walters - woof. That one was a surprise.

Absolutely loved watching Whittington. The Rams know how to find WR. He is going to have a nice career if he can stay healthy.
We missed on Tray. Period. THat was one of the last classes in the dinosaur era of evaluating.

Mine was having a friend sign me in at the 2nd lunch period study hall and taking a DOUBLE LUNCH EVERY DAY! The school was downtown at the time and we got to leave for lunch. We ate lunch and then went to a friends bar, played foosball and pool!

1) Ewers, in his sophomore campaign, threw for 3500 yards at a 69% (nice) completion %, 8.8 yards per attempt, and a 158.3 rating. All while missing 2+ games. If the debate is "is he living up to his star rating" ok, not really going to debate that battle. But all indications point to him on a very good career trajectory. Room for improvement? Absolutely - but for some posters to suggest he's thus far been a disappointment when he's the first Longhorn QB since Colt to lead a team to any meaningful success is silly.

I believe we'll continue to see his career progress in the right direction, save for injuries.

2) Jaydon Blue is a stud, and we'll see that play out this year. I just watched a replay of the last 6 games from last season. A rare player that every time has the ball in his hands, you expect something spectacular. Against Tech, Ok State & Washington - he seemed to be playing a different speed and game then the opposing defense. It's a shame he (& Baxter) fumbled against Washington, cause we were forced to get away from the running game in the 4th quarter after our disastrous 3rd quarter.

I think if Blue plays a full season, he has a chanced to eclipse 1,800 total yards (give me 1,500 rushing / 300 receiving). I also believe he'll be RB1 or RB2 in the draft next year.
We're on the same page with Blue.

They weren’t 6,0 perfect-rated QBs coming out of high achool
VY? Many of them were prior to the current ranking system but would have been 6.0+ back in their day. Again, HS rankings weren’t what I was posting about. I was posting about the fact that the best college careers do not translate to pro careers as often as expected.
The hit rate of super Blue HS QBs is higher but not a given. VY, Russell, Ryan Leaf, Mark Sanchez, JT Daniels, (others) were all 6.0 + types

It's just that none of them profile like Fasusi. He's 0 for 4 on those.

Flood specializes in players like Fasusi.
This is accurate about Flood, and ou's coach.
I'm sure they've said this to Fasusi repeatedly--it just may not be sticking.

He's a great coach. He has no experience with prospects like Fasusi. Flood has tons of experience and success with prospects like Fasusi.

It's not like Coach B. hasn't had some swings at the plate.
A sales pitch that we can hope gets traction with Fasusi.

Has Texas had any players of recent Nigerian background? Has Oklahoma? Their ancestry seems to be important to Fasusi's family. Maybe another relative advantage to highlight if it exists.

That's a lot of excuses in one sentence.

It’s kind of been the same every year for Quinn. I keep waiting for “he’s lighting it up and gonna explode this year”, but it’s always “Quinn looked solid. Quinn was sharp and didn’t turn the ball over.” Or something along those lines. I’m projecting him to take another decent step up, just because it’s year three for him and Sark has a history of guys showing marked improvement year to year, so I’m kind of giving benefit of the doubt to a degree, but I can’t say I’m confident he will end up in NYC.

Based on what? What specifically are you saying that you are arguing?
Sarks ratio of taking QBs and turning them in to plus players and putting them in the NFL. So, I am not worried about what is being said or not said about Quinn at this point. I trust that he will be fine this year.

That's fair.

When talking about quarterback, that's probably correct. Yet, if we look specifically at Texas, the ones he has signed and used are very, very highly rated.

Baker is in year 1, my man is a true freshman. Sounds like maybe we’re painting a picture for a clearer path to playing time for a certain OT stud. Lots of pro Texas talking points for a 5* OT in this edition! Love it.

Just saw my typo regarding year.

Snoops Upside Ya Head was always my favorite Snoop song, but I bet only 5% of Snoop fans would agree with that.

It's true. I had a steadfast belief that he would end up in the NFL back in 2020 when he was struggling at left tackle and was pretty vocal about it.
Then you must have known in 2020 that Herman would be replaced, and subsequently Herb Hand as well… because CJ’s growth and development correlates directly with the coaching from Sark and Flood’s development of him; Tope Imade and Denzel Okafor have said as much about Flood’s importance to their own development.

It’s just a shame both of those players didn’t have an extra season or two under Flood’s tutelage.

That being said I don’t doubt that you saw potential in Jones; a lot of us were hoping for him to take that next step. But… there was nothing to indicate that he would develop into an NFL draft pick/player with Hand at the helm. To say otherwise is a revisionist’s history.

I say this because I’m a huge fan of CJ’s; both as a player and certainly as a person. I wish him nothing but the best. The original indictment of CJ has nothing to do with potential, but instead that of Herman and his staff…

How many super blue chips has he signed as a coach?

How many have been successful?
According to your information, which I trust, is 4 signed, 0 successful.

But it's much more nuanced than that simple analysis. You can't blame the OL coach for failing to develop a player that does something and gets booted off the team. You also can't blame the OL coach for a player going back to his home State after 1 year for NIL payday.

If we are being honest Green was a starter as a true freshman, was he not? So how exactly are you measuring his success?

Details always matter fam.

And I'm way more impressed with putting lower ranked players in the NFL, than ready made super blue chips.

Can someone explain why we give all the OL $50k a year? That’s $200k over 4 years to those that never play a down. I see why they don’t leave when they’re getting paid and not on the two deep.

The NIL should be about attracting the top talent versus paying for participation. Then we could pay Fasusi and others versus losing them.
