Cliff-notes: The Longhorns picked up a massive commitment on Friday when 2022 quarterback Quinn Ewers of Southlake (Texas) Carroll committed to Tom Herman and his coaching staff, giving the program its second commitment for the 2022 recruiting class.
Rankings: Ewers is a High four-star prospect in the current Rivals.com rankings, while I have him ranked as a high four star and as the No.12 overall prospect in the 2022 Lone Star Recruiting Rankings. 247 currently has him ranked as a five-star prospect and the No.1 overall prospect in the nation. ESPN has also has him ranked as a five-star prospect and the nation's No.1 overall prospect in the 2022 class.
Key Offers: Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, Ohio State and Oklahoma.
Evaluation: Ewers is such a polished passer and productive player at the high school level that it's easy to see him emerging into a three- or four-year starter at the college level. In terms of accuracy, I'm not sure you'll find anyone in the nation that will rival him in that department. This kid absolutely drops dimes all over the field. As a player for Southlake Carroll in 2019 as a sophomore, Ewers was almost too much for opposing defenses to handle, as he threw for 4,000+ yards, 45 touchdowns and only three interceptions. I'll raise my hand here and admit that there's been a little bit of a disconnect between myself and other folks that have ranked Ewers, mostly because I haven't seen his arm strength showcased in game play in a way that makes me think he's a no-doubt-about-it-five-star. I've also been told that his arm strength will be an element of his game that should begin to show itself this season, so I'm excited to see his development. As it currently stands, I think he's a five-star player with four-star tools, while other services believe he's a five-star player with five-star tools. Hence, the difference between having him ranked as the top player in the state/country and merely one of the top players in the state/country. The bottom line is that he's really, really freaking good and we're only quibbling over the heavy nuance.
Player he somewhat reminds me of: Current Georgia quarterback J.T. Daniels.
Why it matters: This is a headline-making commitment of the highest order. This bad boy will almost certainly make the crawl on ESPN. Add in the fact that we're talking about a quarterback and a head-to-head win over Oklahoma and... yeah... it's a really big deal. The Longhorns might have a 100 problems inside the pandemic, but the quarterback position from 2020-2025 or 2026 ain't really one of them. The quarterback run in recruiting from 2019-2022 (Hudson Card, Ja'Quinden Jackson, Jalen Milroe and Ewers) rivals or surpasses that of the run from 1999-2002 (Chris Simms, Chance Mock, Matt Nordgren and Vince Young) as the greatest stretch in school history.
