Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (30 things rolling around in my head about Texas...)

Please refer to the DB in question as Earl Thomas, or, better yet, E.T.

There is only one man that can be referred to with the single name of "EARL", and his last name is Campbell.
I have a brother in law named Earl. If he can go by his first name only in my house, so can #20. My BIL is an accountant for Exxon.

Sam has two seasons of eligibility at Texas remaining. Winning two National Championships would make Sam arguably the best QB to play at Texas.

However unlikely that may seem, it is conceivable. It's in the future, so I'm not ruling it out. Hence my statement. Sam could become the best QB in Texas football history.
I'm not even sure two titles would do it, but yes, if he runs the table in the next two years, I guess.

No. 9 - The List: Top 10 Texas Defensive Backs ...

No way this one is going to be easy, not when you're ranking defensive backs at a school that likes to think of itself as DBU.

I'm sure the opinions on this will be fierce, so let's just get to it.

10. Cedric Griffin
9. Rod Babers
8. Nathan Vasher
7. Quentin Jammer
6. Bryant Westbrook
5. Aaron Ross
4. Johnnie Johnson
3. Michael Huff
2. Jerry Gray
1. Earl Thomas
Are we talking about NCAA careers only or NCAA plus NFL careers?

Ketch, a 4 point win in overtime is impossible, based on the overtime format.
a. not impossible, just unlikely.

b. did you think you'd be the first to point that out?;)[/QUOTE]
Actually, it's impossible. Say Team A gets the ball first:

1) If Team A scores a TD, Team B isn't going to kick a FG because they'd automatically lose.
2) If Team A kicks a FG and then Team B scores a TD, Team B isn't going to kick the PAT because the game is already over.

Not better than Jerry Gray's best, and Gray did it at that level for 4 seasons, not one.

While a bit of an apples to oranges comparison d/t eras here there their numbers from '84 and '09, respectively:

Gray - 103 tackles (88 solo/15 assist). 7 picks for 67 yds, 7 PBUs, 1 FF and 3 FR (recoveries).
Thomas - 77 (50/27). 8 picks for 149 yds. 16 PBUs. 1 FF.

I can see a strong argument for either one. I would lean a bit to Thomas.

Makes it severely unlikely, but not impossible.

King wouldn't have gotten a real shot at a lot of places. Timing and fit matter a lot.

Certainly King is another example of Tom Herman and staff having an excellent eye for talent. And "fit" was exactly my point. King fit Herman's system because he's a first-rate passer along with being a dynamic runner. He's just short. If Roschon Johnson turns out to be as good a passer as King, he will be a perfect fit.

Definitely strong cases for both. Gray had one less pick in a 1984 conference that just didn't throw much, but, by the same token, that probably helped his tackle numbers.

Man, you crazy. If Sam ran off two titles, he would easily unseat Vince in folklore. The Charlie Strong years to 2x titles.....that guy could name his price in Austin for the rest of his life.

Bill Bradley has to be in there someplace.

And let's not forget Raymond Clayborn

Love Babers and Ross but if we are talking coverage skills they do not belong on this list. Agree that Earl Thomas' last year at Texas was most impressive ever by a DB.

---I'd add Raymond Clayborn .hard to only pick 10,but Clayborn was better the a couple on the list-and it's a damn good list @Ketchum

He was an All American , a first round pick,a Pro Bowler , an All Pro , a member of the Patriots HOF and he did the same kind of stuff as a Longhorn as you see in the video. He was a bad ass and i was happy to see him play.

BUY or SELL: David Beaty is a Longhorn coach next season?

(Buy) He hasn't been hired by anyone else at this point and I don't believe in accidents.

Ketch, what do you think we are waiting for?

The top five is unreal.

….and just like that our friendship is...

On your list of great Texas defensive backs, you have to find spots for Ricky Churchman and Raymond Claiborne. And no Super Bill Bradley? Hmmmm.

Clayborn and he said you had to be am All American to make the cut.Raymond should definitely be on the list

Let's just say I don't disagree with you in terms of thinking VY will remain the GOAT at TX. But let's just also say that if Ehlinger wins a national title, then rest assured an appreciable amount of people will put him ahead of VY for a few reasons none of which will be football related.
VY is not only the GOAT in UT history, but arguably in CFB history. It’s unlikely that Sam or any UT QB to follow will supplant VY as the GOAT at Texas.

But for you to even speculate on a scenario that Ehlinger leads Texas to a National Title is nice to see. Has Sam finally won you over?

What about Jerry Grey. 2 Time All-American, Highest paid DB in the NFL when he retired.

My eyes tell me that he could hang the moon and he wasn't better than VY.

Ross won the Thorpe Award.

"6. Ingram ended his season averaging 5.0 yards per carry and 6.3 yards per catch, numbers that suggest getting a big-time running back prospect in this class was a bigger priority than it might have looked like in October. It's hard to know right now just how much of a workload Ingram can handle at this level."

I've said this and I have said this all along, in order for this Football program to take the next step it needs to get a bluechip running back to take up to the next level where UT is competing for big 12 and national championships.

I still think Ingram can go a long way to filling the shoes of that role, but he ran out of gas.

Getting the sense that the staff has been told it will be retained. Only someone leaving on their own might change the dynamics.
Well, I'm not a fan of that news. Beatty should be on this staff for recruiting period. I am also ready to move on from Drayton, but I don't make the calls. I'll sit back, over analyse and trust in Herman.

Nothing official or something that we'd "officially" report, but it's the sense we have.
