Ketch's 10 Thoughts From the Weekend (A&M's Kevin Sumlin problem is a gift for Strong)

Good stuff Geoff

Creed was the strongest of the Rocky franchise perhaps outside of the original

I thought it was Sly's best acting ever...

The best thing about being a relatively "new" EPL fan, is that you can drop your allegiance to your team of choice and feel absolutely zero remorse. F the Blues - I'm done with them. Dropping the best manager on the planet because of a couple of disgruntled pre-Madonnas in the locker room is complete madness. I hope they get relegated. Can we label this Chelsea FC's "Harbaugh moment" (referring to the 49ers letting Jim Harbaugh leave SF)? How about a new verb, "Harbaugh'd"?... I'm out.
Whoa!

Yep...I actually liked Creed more than The Force Awakens and I really liked both movies. Creed hit me at a more visceral level. I found the acting in Creed to be superior. Though, I understand the inherent difficulty in humans acting within a CGI realm.

I'm glad that Ketch included Tessa Thompson in his best supporting actress list. In a movie filled with top notch (Sly's being Oscar worthy) performances I thought she really stood out.

She deserves to be getting more run than she has been. Not sure she stands a chance for a supporting nod.

I'm in total agreement with you on The Force Awakens. I couldn't have asked for a better Star Wars movie. One thing I really liked was the complete opposite of Kylo Ren is compared to Darth Vader. Vader was always in complete control whereas Ren is a psycho.
Always? I think Anakin Skywalker had anger issues similar to Kylo Ren. Or do you mean old man Darth Vader?

@Ketchum Star Wars was an incredible experience but I'll be surprised if it gets nominated for an Academy Award.

As for the final plot twist, my wife (from 'Nam) has already said the next two movies will be ruined for her because of it.

I too thought there were a lot of 'Cute' parallels in the script to the original Star Wars: A New Hope. Not enough to distract from the movie but maybe one too many. But if that trend continues, I can't wait for Daisy's scene in that Princess Leia Slave outfit!!!!!

Thought Star Wars was great but...
SPOILERS! SPOILERS! SPOILERS!!!
DO NOT READ IF YOU haven't SEEN IT!!

1. How does Daisy become (& for that concern Finn as well) a badass w the light saber w NO previous training?
2. I thought it was clearly established previously that Stormtroopers were clones of Boba Fett's dad? Wtf!? Now they're NOT?
3. Daisy Daisy Daisy OMG she's HOT!

1. She was already a trained fighter on some level. Remember her fight seen early in the movie when she takes out a couple of dudes while Finn watches, Plus, she seems to have super jedi natural powers.

2. 30 years down the road, it's a different army.

3. Kind of a mix between Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman.

A few things:

1) Malik was leaning towards Texas in September. The relationship with Coach Strong had a lot more to do with Malik picking Texas than Sumlin screwing it up. Sure, Kevin didn't do himself any favors, but this wasn't luck.

2) Brandon Jones and Patrick Hudson are four stars? Jordan Elliott is a three star?
Spot on! I'll take Strong's 3 stars over some of the rivals 4 stars everyday! Haven't we had some of those "highly ranked" recruiting classes that just disappeared?

Pretty much all of Charlie's best freshmen this year were very highly ranked by Rivals.

John Burt
Connor Williams
Patrick Vahe
Malik Jefferson
Holton Hill
Davante Davis

None of those guys were a Strong three-strar.

Going to be fascinating to see who pulls the plug on their coach first, Texas or A&M. Even though Sumlin's record is far better than Chuck's if he's lost the team, it won't matter.

It'll depend on Texas' first five games. A 2-3 start will be very tough to overcome because the wheels will be in motion.

Patrick Hudson is a 5 star recruit in the composite listings. Rivals has him as a 4 star is ridiculous. People need to stop paying attention to Rivals star system. The composite rating system is far more accurate.

I don't have Hudson rated as a five-star, so there's that. And I was the FIRST person in the industry to rank him in a national top 50 regard. ESPN also has him as a four-star, so there's that as well.

BUY or SELL: The only reason the Texas defensive staff is not getting fired is because it’s better recruiters than the offensive staff was because the product on the field is about the same or worse?

(Sell) This might drive you crazy, but I don’t get the sense that Charlie Strong believes he has any issues with his defensive staff. The vibe inside the 40 Acres is that this defense failed this season for personnel and youth issues, not anything related to the quality of the coaching staff.

And he is correct

Ketch...who would you go with at QB this year if you were Charlie?
And any decent grad transfers at QB?

Disagree that there is "zero" reason to believe that Jake Hubenak would have been an upgrade over Jerrod and Tyrone. Jake was an outstanding passer in high school carrying his team to the state finals. Neither Jerrod nor Tyrone ever had a reputation as a consistently good passer. Jake still has to prove himself at the next level, but the ability he showed to throw the ball consistently accurately is more than "zero".

Small sample size, but thus far this season: 12 of 27 for 92 yards and 1 touchdown. 85.3 rating.

That's almost 25 points behind Murray, who was 20 points behind Heard.

1. There was a little of this too with Luke Skywalker. He had very little training and yet used the force with great efficacy once he was made aware of it's existance. His first sabre battle and he holds his own quite well with Vader. Again, with little formal training to speak of he is a much superior fighter to his father by the second time they fight. In the later Star Wars novels it's explained that Skywalker is the most naturally gifted Jedi who has ever lived and he just had a natural feel for how to manipulate the force that other Jedi simply do not possess. He inherited these gifts from his father, but was better able to access them since he lacked the immense anger that hsi father had. Palpatine had it wrong. It was his lack of anger that made him powerful -- his purity of heart, if you will.

What's the point of all that? I'm predicting that Rey will wind up being Luke's daughter. Several reasons for this: when she first touched Luke's sabre she has an immediate connection to it beyond simply being force sensitive. It triggered visions for her the likes of which nothing before had. Secondly, Kylo Ren made a comment about her being "the long lost girl" or something like that. When Kylo murdered all the young Jedi's, Luke probably made a priority of saving his daughter and then depositing her somewhere she would be safe. It's no coincidence that Max Von Sydow's character, someone you get the impression is thought of very highly by the resistance, happens to live in the next village over, just as Obi-Wan did for Luke as a child. Lastly, a strong hint was made with the way she pulled the light sabre from the snow using telekinesis for the first time in her life, paralleling what Luke did on Hoth to save himself from the Wampa.

Finn is an easy one. He's a trained killer who is probably efficient in multiple forms of battle. Add in a little force sensitivity on his part and there you go. And let's not pretend that Kylo fought with the level of precision that trained Jedi's and Sith displayed in previous Star Wars films. He fought like a talented amateur who is still learning the ropes compared to the more practiced technique of Obi-Wan.

2. It gets explained somewhere in a past film or book that clones were a one-time deal from the past. Domnhal Gleason's general character seemed like he was arguing for a return to cloning.

3. Totally agree. She is a stunning woman.
