Mack was set to walk away and then when he didn't get the storybook finish, he decided he was going to stay until he got it, even though he didn't have the hunger, energy, production or know-how that he had when he was truly a great coach.Most all great coaches have huge egos which lead to being a little selfish at times. No great coach wants to leave or be asked to step down. All the great ones think they can turn it around. I remember the last few years of Tom Landry with Dallas and honestly just like Mack he should have stepped down at least 2 or 3 years before he was let go. To the bitter end Coach Landry thought he could turn it around and get the job done when in reality the team would have been better off if he had retired a couple of years earlier.
Even at the end, his motives were selfish, as he tried to play games in the final week on the job.
